How To Steal A Base In Softball

  • When the pitcher starts her motion, you'll want to rock back with her as her arm is going back. When she is close to the top of her motion, you'll want to start to get your momentum going towards the base you want to steal. As she is on her down motion (about 3/4 of the way down), you'll start to push with your front foot so when the pitcher releases, your foot will be off the bag.
    Starting in the front or back is the athlete's preference.

    I like being in front of the bag, i feel closer to second base, softball is a game of inches & at times that one one inch could determine if you're safe or out. Nice Video ⚾️

    Had to take over the coaching of my daughter's 14u girls softball, I didn't know what the hell I was doing but watching your videos helped teach me so I can teach them. Our season starts in a couple days and I can't wait! Thank you!🥎

    Why do so many girls set up with their foot on the side of the bag (side of foot touching side of bag, no foot is actually on the bag)?

    New into coaching softball. Can anyone explain why you would not always set up in front of the bag? You are one step closer to the next base.
    What is the reason for setting up even with the bag?

      It’s just preference really. Some feel they get a better jump that way.

      My coach makes us so that we are less likely to lead off early and get called out, and we also time the pitcher to start rocking and gaining momentum before we actually leave the bag.

    Strongly disagree setting up in front of the bag. No mechanical advantage of getting momentum underway before the pitch release. A rocking motion is inferior to a full step that you get when setting up along side the base

      No problem! To each their own. It worked well for me in college, starting in front. I feel I got great jumps and my timing was on.

      @MegRem, I like your in front of the base set-up. What about the idea of pushing off with your lead foot/leg that is in front of the base. In your final example video you take a small step with your left/lead foot. Why not just drive off the ground with your left foot and pull your right leg through. It seems like it would be slightly faster.

    What happens if there is an air ball and they catch it? Do you have to run back to the base or are you automatically out?

    • @MegRemSoftball
      @MegRemSoftball  Před rokem +1

      You mean a fly ball or line drive? Yes, run back to the bag

      @@MegRemSoftball I’ve always set up with my foot in front of the bag and I just started using the timing with the pitcher technique, but yesterday my coach told our team having your foot in the front is not the right way and takes too much time to run off the base, so he made us run bases using the foot in the back. During a game he also kept trying to correct me. Is there really a big time difference between both methods?

    • @MegRemSoftball
      @MegRemSoftball  Před rokem

      @@Caroline_17. I was actually timed in college and was a split second faster starting in front. There is no right or wrong way. It's preference in my opinion.
