      This system is very flawed.
      The valve reduces the flow, which prevents all particulates from being pulled out of the oil pan with the oil.

      I used to have a Citroën SM. Its oil drain plug was so large that it used a 17mm hex key, same as a Volkswagen Beetle’s transaxle plug. The threads were like 25mm. The oil dumped in only a few seconds.
      The Citroën transaxle was the same design as on DS/ID cars so it had more normal drain and fill plugs like 21mm hex head, 14mm threads.

      Subaru Outback (and other models I’m sure) has a top of the engine oil filter canister. Pop open the hood. To the right of the valve cover and next to the oil filler cap is the oil filter. Only issue is u cannot pre-fill the canister with fresh oil prior to installing like u can if the canister was screwed on from the bottom of the engine. Being top mounted it unscrews with no oil mess since all the oil that was in it has returned to the oil pan. I believe Porsche, BMW, and other cars have the same set up.

Back in my military days, (25 years ago) it had no official nomenclature and certainly wasn't a standard issue item. Apparently, it was acquired by some of the NCO Marines working in the motorpool who had close ties with the machinists. They were very proactive and constantly thinking of ways to improvise tools & methods to enhance performance of equipment, as well as workshop efficiency. There were a lot of Navy Achievement Medals earned back then!

    • @heathjones7002

      I looked at the Fumoto valve before I made the Valvo Max purchase. 2 things that made me go with Valvo Max.
      1: Looked like the Fumoto was brass, I was worried that it would be susceptible to damage from road debris being soft metal.
      2: I was concerned that the lever might lose a pin or break off.
      Maybe not the case in actuality, but if I'm laying down $30, and traveling as much as I do. I don't take any chances. I also keep the original plug in the glovebox, wrench and 5 quarts of oil just in case.

      Same here, been using Fumoto since 2005 or 2006, on total of 4 cars (two of them I don't own anymore). When I first learned about Fumoto I found that they sold a simple clip you could put around the lever to prevent it from being knocked open by accident. I tried it without the clip, and found the valve never opened by itself. Of course I only drive on the road, never do any off roading. So I never bothered installing that little clip :)

      You joke, but there are plans to make oil changes done with a cartridge type system. No longer owner capable as you have to go to a dealer and it's hooked up to the cars computer so it has to be set and match as a oem part.
      Their excuse is people using the wrong oil and causing too many warranty issues.

      Spyros M. Or do like they did with the transmission. When you go do your first transmission service on these newer cars you have to take them to the dealer because there isn’t a hole to put it in. There isn’t even a dipstick to check the fluid.

      @lezlethal Před 6 lety +4

      That's a good idea never thought of that. Mine faces down also, it's not too messy. I just let it drop down in the pan, then wipe any oil from the frame.

    • @robs1852
      @robs1852 Před 6 lety

      I agree! Depending on the car, the placement of the filter really sucks when you have to remove it. Basically side-mounted and near the exhaust manifold makes it impossible to not make a mess. The drain plug is always at the bottom and easy to control

    • @IIGrayfoxII
      @IIGrayfoxII Před 6 lety

      Same.
      On my imp the filter is near the exhaust headers and that is where the mess comes from, normally a bit when unscrewing and the most when lowing the filter down, this is why I use a large rag to soak up all the oil.

    • @jeahya22
      @jeahya22 Před 6 lety +2

      I come up through the bottom and have someone hold a plastic grocery store bag by the handles. When I'm under the car, just grab and twist the filter through the bag till it's free and have the person let go of handles so I can pull filter and bag down to me. Whatever mess ends up in the bag. Did that make sense?

    I've had a FRAM suredrain system for years which is pretty much thw same thing and it works great and leaves no mess however if it has been left for a while it can be hard to get the dust cap off so it might be an idea to file down two sides of it or something so you can get a tool onto it to grip it better, but i definitely recommend it if you dont want oil pissing everywhere during an oil change

    A few issues to watch out for. First is the valve isn't as free-flowing as removing the original drain plug so if there is sludge or metal filings, they won't come out as easily. On that note, most OEM plugs have a magnetic end which pulls fine metal out of the oil. Other point is many mechanics and "lube and go" shops won't touch a third party drain plug for fear of being blamed for leakage. I have a fumoto petcock valve on my car for over 8 years, it works great, never leaks, but I don't have the diagnostic of a magnetic plug and I can't find a shop willing to change the oil as an option to doing it myself.

    That's an interesting idea. I wonder if it could be used in the situation where one has stripped the threads in the pan. Normal approach is a new pan, since the depth of the threads may not be enough for a Helicoil. Instead of replacing the pan, you could try to glue this into place with JB weld. If it works, you've saved the cost of a new pan, if it doesn't work you have to replace the pan anyway....

    • @markypolo55
      @markypolo55 Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, or go Metric instead ( in case of a SAE thread), or SAE in case of a Metric bolt.The difference in size is minuscule and only removes small amount of material. Of course, you are going to need the Tap and Die sets ( which may offset the cost of a new pan ( if you have to buy them).

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 6 lety

    Scotty thanks for your honesty ... there is a new vacuum way of changing oil.. this is my experience ... try it on a 2010 toyota highlander it leaves 3 quarts in the engine (at jiffy lube)... the guy was going to leave 3 dirty quarts in the engine then over-fill it i was watching him.. he argued with me claiming that all oil was out of the engine .. when i demanded he pull the oil plug and prove it the additional 3 quarts of oil drained out ... just because a vacuum works on a honda dont assume the hose can reach the bottom of the pan in all cars .. my brother in law just had his jeep oil changed at dealership today they used the vacuum and when he got it home it poured oil all over the garage floor from being over-filled because the vacuum didn't pull all oil out and the dealer added the full recommended amount and didn't check it and over-filled it by about 3 quarts. .new engine time? who knows .. please make a video on this new practice because i think there are going to be a lot of law suits over it.. that's bad enough but i have 50K miles on that highlander and i don't want a new engine .. New engines are never quite the same as the original one .. i have seen many videos here with guys claiming these are wonderful .. my experience has been really bad.

      +Eric sin: If you are doing your own oil changes, you could cut open your oil filter to see if there are MORE EXPENSIVE bits of metal. If you found them, you would probably seek a second opinion about the condition of your engine. If you have been driving the car for a long time, you would probably know WHY those EXPENSIVE bits were in your oil pan. I have a truck with 320K miles on it. Runs great. a year ago, found small bits of metal in it, and replaced my worn down timing chain & gear set. Hint: it was noisy too.

      All of your moving part oil seals are rubber:
      Crankshaft front and rear, axle shaft seal, camshaft seal, you-name-it seal . . . . its rubber
