  • New Honda Grom Review, Specs, Changes Explained + More! Check out the 2024 Honda Grom 125 here: • New 2024 Motorcycles &... | Today we're taking a close look at the 2023 Grom 125 motorcycle, also known as the MSX 125. This 125cc motorcycle, is one of many new mini bikes that Honda has released over the years but this one doesn't have the retro / vintage style like some of the other motorcycles in the model lineup. With the CT125, also known as the Trail 125 and Hunter Cub as well as the Dax 125 / ST125 and the Monkey 125, plus the icon Super Cub 125. The Grom is one of only two to have a manual 5 speed transmission, shared with the Monkey and the rest of the motorcycles in the lineup have a semi automatic transmission setup with a 4 speed. Even without having an automatic transmission though, the Grom is one of the easiest motorcycles to ride and that's why a lot of beginner, training motorcycle courses like MSF have started to utilize the Grom. Plus the upside to the Grom when it comes to new riders or even those with experience, is that replacing the plastic body panels on the Grom is so much cheaper than other motorcycles and that leads us over to accessories, parts and modifications for the Grom, as they're cheap too!

      The SP really should have fully adjustable suspension, real rubber and preferably a power bump.
      I think they should look into offering a larger Grom aswell - not in physical size but capacity. We know the CBR300 motor can be crammed in by people in their garage so it shouldn't be a problem for Honda to do a similar thing.
      I would buy that over a CBR300 all day and twice on Sundays.

      Change ? Well, just a reduced price perhaps something to increase visibility like reflective strips or day glow paint. Fluorescent paint or something. I am a fan of fluorescent green. Plus, work on the chassis to prevent any wobbles .
      Maybe employ me, to create a revolutionary new frame and front shocks system.

    I have a 22’ SP and have heavily modified it. With a new lithium battery, new exhaust, new intake, new rearsets 6:19 and new sprockets it weighs less than 200lbs now! It has WAY more modifications than that but those upgrades dropped weight a LOT.
    The new intake, new camshaft, countershaft sprocket and aRacer RC Mini X ECU with the wideband O2 sensor AF2 were the biggest performance upgrades I have made.
    That little bike RIPS! I would recommend to anyone except those who are afraid of getting addicted to spending money on parts for it. It’s very reliable without aftermarket parts but once you start modding, it’s hard to stop. Also the community is fantastic. I’m in Los Angeles and there are mini-moto group rides here every Friday night in DTLA. We all stay together and take over the streets here and it’s great. I have 4 Honda motorcycles in the garage and the Grom is the smallest and my favorite

    • @HondaProKevin
      @HondaProKevin  Před rokem +8

      Nice work on weight savings man, it's wild how much of a difference it makes once you really start hacking off some of the heavy stuff and pair it up with the mods you've got! You don't really notice it that much until you kick them off against a relatively stock Grom or one with similar mods but the guy may have a lot more weight on you etc.
      lol you hit the nail on the head there bud, I ALWAYS warn people to be very careful once you start to remotely modify these mini bikes as it can go downhill... REAL QUICK! Some of the parts are somewhat cheap, so you think "Oh, I'll just get this and that" and next thing you know - you've dropped 10k lol! That's the key right there man, the community. Once you've got at least a buddy or two to rip around and have fun on these with, it's all over with and if you can get together with a herd of them, my cheeks are hurting from smiling and my ribs are too from laughing so much. The Grom brought back the fun of riding to me when I snatched my first one up in 2013, it wasn't about seeing who was the fastest on the track or up the mountain with our sportbikes but now it was all about having fun. Yeah, we like to make these things faster and still try to test each other sometimes but it's not at triple digit speeds and it's not going to cost thousands if we throw it down. I could ramble on and on man but you get it, these things are awesome when it comes to just having fun on 2 wheels and that's magnified ten-fold when you've got some buddies with them too as 9 out of 10 times, you'd rather rip on the minis than the big bikes!

    • @joujimiichi1

      @@HondaProKevin I too could go on and on… I would recommend this bike to anyone from an experienced rider to someone’s first bike. Also to anyone starting to learn about wrenching on bikes; this little single cylinder is easy and fun to work on. You can do a full top end rebuild without removing the engine from the frame! I rode full-sized bikes (750cc-1200cc) for years and a lot of miles before I sat on a Grom and I can confidently say it is my favorite. I work on and build Honda motorcycles for fun and for my friends and I have had a lot of experience with other bikes (mostly Japanese/metric bikes) and something just keeps bringing me back to the Grom.
      There are forums and 3rd party vendors that make owning and working on a Grom so much fun. Drow sports, MNNTHBX, steady garage and WeBike Japan are my favorite vendors but there are more. I could not recommend this bike more!

    • @willyjimmy8881
      @willyjimmy8881 Před rokem

      The aRacer ECU or equivelent is a must. Exhaust and intake are an expensive waste of money without tuning. Camshaft is next on the list and I expect that too will only really pay off after accounting for it in the tune.

    I like the new silver color for this year, I’m glad Honda added this, it is something different from your typical black and red. But my favorite color of all time for the Grom was when you could get Halloween Orange color. It is a nice looking, and great visibility when riding in traffic while you wear a reflective clothing gear. This model is a phenomenal beginner motorcycle for learning to shift gears with a clutch, it is not intimidating for it’s size and weight, looks sporty, it can reach 55mph and it is priced well with Honda reliability. I know a couple few people that bought this model as a beginner and then trade up to something bigger down road. Some did get something bigger and still kept their Grom because they were still have fun with this wonderful mini-moto. Excellent video on this history of the Grom. Ride safe Kevin.

    • @HondaProKevin
      @HondaProKevin  Před rokem +3

      Same here, it's a nice change of pace over the usual! I do wish we got the same gold wheels / forks though like other corners of the world on that silver but beggars can't be choosers I guess as we're lucky to even have options when it comes to colors here. Ahhh, not many know there actual names and just say "orange" lol, noice ;) And yeah, definitely helps a bit with visibility as these things aren't the biggest on the road and we all know too well that people don't pay enough attention while driving their cars these days.
      You hit the nail on the head bud! These tick ALL of the right boxes when it comes to something for people trying to get their foot in the door on learning how to ride. And like you said, I know several people that bought a Grom to learn how to ride on and the end-plan was to then sell it and "upgrade" but... they usually end up falling in love with it and keeping it around as they're a blast to rip around town on and without a doubt, offer a completely different experience over a "normal" bike. They're definitely not for everyone but I'd wager that a lot of the people that think these things are a joke and say "why would you buy that?" etc, if they gave them a chance, would have a blast and especially if you had a couple of buddies with them too as the fun is magnified big time then!
      Thank you... Appreciate the kind words and support as always, Gus.

    • @HondaProKevin
      @HondaProKevin  Před rokem +10

      That's exactly what I've said in some of my past videos, I think the 15'ish hp mark would be PERFECT and especially if they could keep it around the same price point. In a perfect world, toss that 4v 160 setup in there that's in the PCX / ADV. Sadly, we know that's not happening any time soon but hey... we can dream, before the inevitable happens and they all turn electric.

    • @wymotome
      @wymotome Před rokem +12

      People saying that these need more power have likely never spent any time on the original Monkey/Trail/Z, etc. The injected 125 they use now is waaaay better than the 50/70/90cc miil they used back then.
      Plus a larger motor would encourage folks to ride these on freeways and highways and I'm not so sure that's a good idea. Honda makes a few 300cc bikes similar to a Grom and those are far better for that task.

    • @Hawk7886
      @Hawk7886 Před rokem +8

      @@wymotome both of those statements are amusing. Saying the current engine is perfectly fine because the carbureted engines from decades in the past sucked more is... A super weird take. Guess we'll just stop pushing the envelope, we've hit some sort of weird multiplier of ancient engine specs.
      Nobody cares if you ride it on the highway. It's definitely not recommended, but whatever. If you're comfortable pushing cruising speeds while a soccer mom in her fully loaded minivan which weighs *15 times* what the little bike sits at stock blasts past you at 85mph... Well, you do you.

    • @wymotome
      @wymotome Před rokem +12

      @Hawk7886 what's amusing is that you're wanting to take a tiny motorcycle with tiny 12" tires up against full sized traffic on the highway at actual freeway speeds. That's not what these are or ever were intended for. Honda makes a larger bike for only a few hundred more if that's your aim. That's why I find it laughable that people complain about hp in minimotos. And that's why honda will never drop a 200cc+ motor in them.

    • @maskedavenger2578
      @maskedavenger2578 Před rokem

      The reason these are 125 cc is because they have to sell them in the U.K. & Europe where the Learner laws are 125 & a max just below 15 hp . Also adding more power to a novelty motorcycle with puny wheels ,would be pointless ,as it would probably handle like a pig on roller skates over 6O mph .

It doesn't matter how old or young you are, how much experience you have, if you're into sport bikes, cruisers, dirt, touring etc and if the Grom isn't your style - you've got options while still sticking with the whole "mini" theme.
      That's awesome! You're incredibly lucky as everyone over here is still waiting for American Honda to make the official announcement for us. Are you planning on modifying it or leaving it relatively stock and riding the wheels off it?
      Thanks for watching and sharing, always cool to hear from others on the opposite side of the pond. One day I'd love to make the trip out there as you guys get some pretty cool stuff that we don't see on our shores, sadly...

    I looked at the Grom but, I felt like the Monkey seemed "bigger" so I got the Black 2022 ABS. The difference in price is worth it. My Monkey in 10 years will still be a beautiful little Scrambler with chrome fenders, not plastic, I think overall the Monkey is a much better mini moto. I would like to change my Monkey and put Grom style handle bars. The Monkey is a little strange, with it's "cruiser" handle bars. But, otherwise I think it's the best mini moto sold, I just wish it would go at least 80 Lol

    • @HondaProKevin
      @HondaProKevin  Před rokem +3

      Nice! The upside to these minis, you can't go wrong with any of them as it all just depends on what fits you the best and what styling you prefer etc.
      The only downfall to the Monkey though, in my opinion... Is the replacement part cost for those of us that like to bring out our inner-hooligan when on these mini bikes. You can replace every piece of plastic on a Grom, a couple of times before you even get close to the cost of replacing that fuel tank on the Monkey if it were to hit the ground. That's why I want a Monkey and a Grom, one to act stupid on because parts are cheap when I toss it down and the Monkey to look cool on lol!
      I'm curious, if Honda had the Dax as an option here in the US when you bought your Monkey - would you still take the Monkey?
      When you say "cruiser" style handlebars, are we talking about because they're chrome or the height / bend etc with the bars?
      lol I'm with you there bud, 80 out the box would be AWESOME! Especially if they could keep the same price point but we know that's not happening, sadly.

    • @HondaProKevin
      @HondaProKevin  Před rokem +1

      Technically, the manual says to clean it after 8,000 miles on the 2022 CT125 and it's the same story with the strainer screen too. 99% of the time, you'll be fine following the exact guidelines that Honda lays out in their maintenance schedule but I'm a stickler with maintenance and getting the oil that's in there during break-in, in and out as quick as possible, just in case there is some stuff floating around that shouldn't be there. Case in point, the trash you saw on my strainer screen. Was it going to hurt anything? Odds are no but with these things barely holding any oil and it's so easy to get to everything, I figured it's cheap insurance at the end of the day as I like to beat on my toys and I want to make sure everything is good-to-go, as much as I can.
      Long story short, it all depends on how paranoid you are lol ;)

    • @anthonyupson4535
      @anthonyupson4535 Před rokem +1

      If you get one with ABS it'll just stop you from being able to do Endo's, which I might assume as a first timer you might not want to do. However that being said, according to the interwebs you can just pull the ABS fuse and stoppie your heart out once you felt comfortable enough to give it a shot if you wanted. Other than that it would be helpful in slick conditions, and a lot of bike dudes will probably tell you that you'll be using your front brake for most of your stopping power, however personally I grew up on dirtbikes in fields and woods and bicycles with coaster brakes, so I slam the rear and glide in sideways like a boss which is always fun unless you high-side lol
