A little too late to be establishing direct diplomatic relations now, Secretary Blinken. The Kingdom of Tonga and your other South Pacific island friends have been here this whole time trying to work out a diplomatic arrangement with you. The last time the United States was involved in Tonga was in the 1970s, when the Nixon Administration reached out to South Pacific nations in a bid to stem the tide of Communism springing up in South East Asia (not that Communism would have even been remotely successful in the South Pacific). Now that the People's Republic Of China has entered the chat, suddenly the Biden Administration is rushing to secure a US presence.
