  • This is one epic chase and switching video you don't want to miss! I caught up to the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad in Pembine, WI at the woodyard where they ran into MANY PROBLEMS before they were able to get the train together to head back north! This is a typical day of railroading...

I’m pretty sure I’d have had a few things to say to the loaders who didn’t see fit to load the cars consecutively. That’s a LOT of unnecessary work because of what I think is just plain stupidity on the lumber company’s part. Great job on the video. It’s nice to see the actual working side of railroading as opposed to run-bys. Thanks for sharing this with the non-railroaders. It’s not a glamorous job in any way, shape, or form! Been there. Done that.

I enjoy my career on the railroad but Jason is absolutely right. The jobs we do are not as easy as it looks. The switch lists we're given have to be followed to the letter sometimes because of train compliancy, placement, and also because of road switching order. Also, the brakes can slow movement but not entirely if the cars are on air. Of course i work for BNSF, we can apply 2 handbrakes and shove or pull and it will still move but your ears will pay for it when it comes past you or you have to ride that car (i personally won't do that if i'm riding the last car on a pull or shove). There might have been some angle cocks closed if the engineer couldn't move those cars, that's normally the issue. Also for jobs like that BNSF usually have 3 man crews on jobs like that. I worked on both agreements (Santa fe and CB&Q/BN) and there's a Foreman and Helper Conductor and Engineer on yard jobs and for road switcher/local turn jobs on the CB&Q/BN agreement consists of a Road and Brakeman Conductor and of course Engineer. Road crews is just two person crews, Conductor and Engineer. Sorry for the long comment but i like to explain it clearly.

Nope, it wasnt that the locos couldn't pull the train because weight, it was because they didn't wait for the brakes on the cars to be properly pressurized, so they can be released.
In other words, impatience on the part of the crew. That's why they ended up increasing idle RPM to over 1200 the second time they tried pulling the loaded cut of cars.

That whole siding is full of traction problems. It just rained on top of long grass and weeds and that siding May well be partially muddy ruts. Also guaranteed large chunks of bark fall underneath the cars and the famous did you remember to release the hand brakes. Right off the bat those first two cars are overloaded and not just a little bit. While the car may not be overloaded by weight the height should not exceed the ends of the cars. Sending them out would make the cars extra top-heavy and could even result in them tipping over much less having the logs slide off. As for the three empty Center beams they were doing the Alter cars in reverse. Just kidding. Probably just ran out of room to leave them so cycle them back. That may be your longest video but with the information and humor and bless you for going out in the rain it was great entertainment

AFAIK all locos have a sanding. even old steam locos... I saw a video where a railfan excursion with a steam loco in the southeast somewhere, a 4-8-4, could not make it up a hill. They got sand from somewhere and hand sanded the rails and the steam loco finally creeped up the hill. Guessing if they where running faster they could have made it the first time.
