Personally when I’m watching one of your longer study with me’s I definitely need music to avoid getting distracted. Sometimes studying can get boring but listening to lofi you like can make it a little more “fun”. Love the detail in this video! 🙏🏽

I always listen to music or podcasts while I study, it’s just that I find silence oftentimes more distracting than have a constant and stable background music.

I find that we all have a variety of ways that helps us to maintain our focus, for some it is listening to lo-fi/classical music, listening to nature noises, or studying while a video is in the background (i.e. study with me videos), which are all mentioned in the video. I really appreciate your take on this, as you include scientific/evidence based.

I like to study listening to soundtrack from my fav movies or series in ambient version. I find myself less concentrated while listening to music, but the soundtrack prevents me from quitting my session too early. It is better to study on 75% concentration for 2h than on 100% concentration for 15 minutes indeed ! 💪

I can’t focus without it (honestly I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not) but I guess it depends on the kind of music you are listening to (I love symphonic metal music and it helps me not get distracted)!

The research you shared is spot on for me. Anything from documentaries to music goes when I am organising my notes, cafe jazz style music for when I am researching, and your study with me/silence for the deep concentration of writing the assignments. Sadly lyrics distract me and lo-fi is too frenetic for my taste.

I definitely feel as if the beneficial effects of music on studying works around helping to maintain focus and reducing stress too. Sometimes I feel like people get the wrong idea that there might be some mystical encoding mechanism that's triggered by music, instead. Seems pretty unlikely to me haha. I like a SWM video on if I have to sit down for longer work or I have a lot of life admin to get through on the computer, if I'm being productive around the house (cleaning, washing clothing, boring tasks) then it's often hardstyle or songs I can sing along to (Taylor Swift is on constant circulation) and if I have to absolutely knuckle down and get something done, my go-to video is the hour long "Muted Lofi Beats for Late Night Studying" video from Study MD... I listened to music with lyrics when studying when I was doing my GCSEs, a levels and undergrad degree, because I found it really hard to focus on studying and I found studying really boring. It definitely affected my studying negatively- not so much for my degree but definitely for my school qualifications.
When I started in the workplace I would listen to music with lyrics too. When I was in an admin role it was fine, but when I got promoted to a more challenging role the music became way too distracting. With the help of a careers coach outside work I identified that the music was a distraction, and she suggested I try the pomodoro technique instead (like your study with me videos) because I find it hard to focus. It was life changing, now I’m way more productive at work and it’s helped me now I’m doing my masters.

Our working memory and executive functioning are more interested in doing something exciting, taking on an interesting challenge, winning a competition. Music completely destroyed my focus, this is not pop music or rock music which have lyrics . Lo-fi and Binaural beats both sucked, while listening to lofi my focus would divert and become focused on the music even though it has no lyrics, while bioneural beats would just get annoying. White noise was nice for studying memorization based subjects (biology, chemistry) while no music was the best for subjects like mathematics and physics, this is all my own opinion from my own experience and I was wondering if any one else had a similar experience.

I think it might also be a question of habit. I grew up in a very loud household (we all have one volume to our voices and it's 'scream') and focusing on any type of task to music, rather than to the conversations going on in my house was much easier and now, I find it really hard to focus without music. I'll skip it if I'm revising smth by teaching it to myself out loud, but the rest of the time I kinda need some kind of background noise and music is the most enjoyable. Thanks for this video though.

This makes it more enjoyable while settling into the studying mindset (which is often the hardest part). Once i’m in the right headspace, I then usually work in silence for deeper focus. For any chill tasks that aren't due for a while I listen to music as it calms me down, but if I have to speedrun through an assessment task due soon I don't listen to music as I find it distracting. So for me personally I am more productive without music.
