Jazz Baltica 6.7.2003 Nils Landgren (vocal & trombone) Lars Danielsson (bass) Wolfgang Haffner (percussion) Esbjörn Svensson (piano) Pat Metheny (guitar) Michael Brecker (tenor sax)
I don't know if is only me, (sure is not) but this performance in particular deserves a place in jazz Olympus. The groove, the dynamics, the voice, the improvisations, the team efort, Brecker... it has it all, Pure and Moving Magic. They pretty much play "in the pocket", "straightforward"... whatever, but i think that this really adds in this case.
Addemdum: after checking out all the versions of this tune i could find, including Benson's, Carpenters and a couple with the autor Leon Rusell himself and some gems, i reaffirm. This one is, by far, THE ONE
Olympus for sure! The groove is so deep and driven even without Danielsson pumping out 8th notes. The dry snare, kick and sometimes Metheny's muted chords does it all and then they can slowly open it up - fantastic!
Esbjörns piano solo beats them all. He is really finding the chromatic in the diatonic that creates this Swedish national sound. We are the only country in the world who has wedding songs in minor 😅 No I am serious!
One of my dreams is to see Metheny and Benson playing a blues toguether, so different approaches, such perfect timings. How come they have never collaborated?
Michael Brecker and Esbjörn Svensson will live forever with performances like this .... Pat Metheney, Nils Landgrean & friends have made the spirit of JAZZBALTICA survive all odds .... could go on and listen forever .....
A little detail that speaks about the jam spirit of this take, and about the tremendous artistic expertice and humbleness of Michael Brecker: before starting his solo, he waits a little and observes, just in case anyone decides to play there, and only then he calmly starts to build and incredibly beautiful round solo. 2:18 Miss you, Mike
Rofl. Everyone up there did the same. But it was super special when brecker did it? Omg brecker stood there in front of the music stand and it was somehow different than the others and I’ll never forget it.
@@beediver Incorrect. I'm a musician, love to jam, and I'm also observed that not everyone do that. That "listen to your bandmates and respect them" thing.
WHEW!!!!!!!!!!! God certainly knew what he was doing when he created these talented men!!! I love them ALL!!! But I have NEVER heard ANYONE EHHHHH-VERRRRR play a trombone like THAT!!!
@@markkubiak8296 These exceptionaly gifted, MASTERFUL musicians, their collective PURE GENIUS... ALL on ONE stage; Metheny, Brecker, Landgren... COMPLETELY... BLOW... MY... MIND!!!
Wow! Listen to that Major 3rd Esbjörn Svensson is hitting @ 5:58-59! A Major Third over a minor tonic! But listen how he does it with rhythmic clarity/conviction, repeats it, 'turning a wrong into right'.
Guitarist, but I dabble on the piano - IMO the piano is the best instrument to understand chordal/voice leading and harmonic movement - and for reading too - each key only exists in one place on the musical staff, whereas on the guitar...I might be a frustrated pianist.
How many shall miss the artistry on tap here Metheny leaps and where do we follow but the band the audience the room and the night and we are near human again
Interesting tone for MB. Even in the midst of unforgiving video recordings, this tone is greasy & pure, but kind of like played through a vintage Supro guitar amp. Amazing how great music lines transcend even the bit crunching life imposes.
Everything is lovely in the garden, but sometimes somebody is pissing in the garden..WHAT A MISERABLE SOUND, HEY IT´S 2003 AND SOUNDS LIKE IN THE EARLY 80S

Pat Metheny has become synonymous to greats like Quincy Jones
Svensson's solo took me to another place.

Yes I do agree concerning Esbjorn Svensson

Wow man you are super observant! 😀
You re not a musician, correct? We all do that....

esbjörn svensson…what a great loss to the jazz world. God rest his soul.
After Metheny's incredible solo, I just wasn't sure if Landgren could match it. Proved me wrong! :D

His guitar sounds like a horn. Amazing

One of the very best Jazz ensemble performances I've ever seen and heard. Staggering ability from all involved !!
The tremendous trombone solo and then the sensitive and nuanced voice!! Wow!!
pure magic...wow love it

I agree! His playing is moving and absolutely stunning. Deeply beautiful.

New favorite version of this song.
Just amazing.
An incredible song by Leon Russell. Great jazz arrangement by Metheny and Friends. Love the piano solo!
I was thinking, what an amazing song written by Leon Russell that could be turned into such a jazz classic by these guys as well as George Benson

Pat's guitar sound is both awesome and crazy at the same time. I never get over his creativity. Love him so much. Nils voice is amazing.
Feel just as transported each time I watch and listen to this again.
Wow. RIP. Michael and Esbjörn....
Wonderful version, Svensson's solo has an incredible tension...suspended from the beginning until its end.

! It could be called a "D minor seven agmented tenth", "diminished forth, or eleventh", "minor third agmented"...lol
Pure Talent Singer and musicians........................a luxury
Absolument grandiose! On ne s'en lasse jamais.
Just Whao!
Simply awesome!!! 💜
Excelente, gran tema una mixtura de virtuosos, y el genial Pat Metheny para coronar, debo señalar que el vocalista (Nils) es muy agradable.
How many shall miss the artistry on tap here Metheny leaps and where do we follow but the band the audience the room and the night and we are near human again
Far beyond what is happening today. Dream Team.

Great version, great solos. Nils Landgren has a nice singing voice, besides being a great 'Bone player.
Yes! A very soulful singer! On trombone he sends me!

Written by the great Leon Russell.
ステキ😹
Fuck me that dude can play the 'bone
😀🌱🌸💛
This song needs to be re-titled ... 'Masker Aid'.
RIP Lyle Mays
This rendition cks energy.
how does he achieve that guitar sound? in the solo I mean. Is some kind of synthesizer?
A Roland GR-300 synth I think.
Roland GR-300 Guitar Synthesizer, if I'm not mistaken - Pat basically uses that one 'Trumpet' patch.
Alright, you beat me to it, cheers.
Metheny sounds great as usual but i prefer listening his Ibanez Jazz guitar
Give the man a break after his solo(trombone) !
Gorgeous version of tha great melody of Carpenters
Great melody of Leon Russell
