Rich Paul Says LeBron James Faced More Obstacles Than Michael Jordan | THE ODD COUPLE

  • THE ODD COUPLE - Chris Broussard & Rob Parker react to Rich Paul saying the following:
    "LeBron was the NBA’s heir apparent, and in the early days of his career, as it appeared he was going to live up to the hype, the players James idolized as a child didn’t embrace him back.
    “The road for LeBron was just as hard, if not harder than the road was for Michael,” said Rich Paul, LeBron’s agent and longtime friend. “For a number of reasons. And I think the biggest reason is, everyone wants you to do something the way somebody else did it previously.
    “LeBron was a kid. (The media) wanted LeBron to be like Mike; they wanted Michael to speak to them in any capacity, which he probably didn’t. They wanted Michael to be his friend, which he probably wasn’t. They also wanted LeBron to act like, be like Michael, and he wasn’t.
    “There were more people that smiled and hoped LeBron failed than there ever was rooting for him to succeed in the beginning.”

He was liked, for the most part, during his first 7 Cleveland years, and fans respected his playoff runs, MVPs, team records, and 2007 finals appearance. There were probably still haters since his rookie season because he labeled himself the Chosen One, but the haters multiplied in 2010.

    • @Watchingvideoslikeu
      @Watchingvideoslikeu Před 2 lety +14

      I think the problem came after the 2011 finals loss. Because it became looked at as a pointless move because remember where NBA fandom was after the 2010 season Kobe had just won his 5th title and he won them in chunks going 3/4 with Shaq and 2/3 with Pau. A generation prior MJ went 6/6 two 3 peats. A generation before that Magic won 5/9 and he won in chunks considering Magic played really for only 12 years. I could go on but the NBA fandom has been used to players like MJ, Magic, Lebron, Kobe winning championships in chunks not just racking up finals appearances and expecting to be “appreciated” just for making the finals irregardless how good the opponent is. So when Lebron left for Miami it was shocking for a player of his talent and stature to do such a thing. Also with Cleveland though his stats were impeccable if you watch some of those Cleveland series they weren’t losing because they were necessarily over matched they were losing because at random points during the game Lebrons level of aggression would change. Yes he was getting double teamed occasionally but he would randomly stop driving to the basket, or randomly start passing up open shots. Like you could visibly see him playing different. So even though his stat line would be 40, 10, & 8. You knew it was some choke job of sort because you saw his body language, shot selection, aggression all change randomly in a way that didn’t make sense.
      Then the 2011 finals happens and he basically played the whole series like that. With no excuse Dwade played great. Bosh played like a tertiary star and all Lebron had to do was play like himself nothing more required and he flopped. So as an NBA most were left thinking what was the point of this? They go on to win 2/4 in Miami but it was underwhelming. The subsequent years to follow were aswell going 2/6 in his next finals appearances. He never gave the league that championship winning dominance of Jordan, Russell, and Magic. No did he have a dominant stretch like Kobe with the lakers (5 chips in 10 years) or like Shaq with the lakers n Heat (4 chips in 6 years).
      It’s not that Lebron is hated on it’s that none of his moves have equated to the dominance or winning that most NBA fans who are about 25 years or older are accustomed to players of his stature. And it’s made the Lebron experience underwhelming which is saying something because he’ll be the all time leading scorer and top 10 in many other categories.

    Let's first define what obstacles mean. LBJ's struggles seem to be magnified to support an inflated narrative. Lots of it is also self-inflicted. Accepting the "chosen one" branding brought large expectations so the more matured player will lie low, earn their keep, and let the doubters switch allegiances after seeing the accomplishments. Someone insisted that naming GOATs is unfair and instead paid homage to his predecessors and his peers. Another declared himself the best ever after a teammate made a key 3-pointer to seal a championship. The "greatest block" in finals history is a goal interference that was missed as the left hand touched the rim. I hope for more humility. LBJ is great, but there's too much selling and reaching.

    I agree that Lebron has been under the most pressure, though I disagree about obstacles. If we're talking strictly the game of basketball, Jordan went through way more competition in this having to be more competitive. Social media didn't put more scrutiny on Lebron. The media and fans do. Social media is just more of a way to see it therefore having more pressure.
    Ever since that man came into the league people claimed him to be the chosen one. They we're looking for their next MJ. I had mine it was Kobe. But when people saw Lebron they gravitated hard. Next thing you know we're saying whose better MJ or Lebron. MJ had his haters too, so did Kobe, that's what happens when you go city to city, championship to championship. That's one of the reasons people don't like Golden State. In the end, MJ had more competition, especially from the east back then. Lebron was Expected to win his titles, even more so when he joined Miami. That wasn't social media that was just the media. And his fans.

    89-93 & 95-98 is 9 years Jordan played w/ a team he should’ve won a chip with. He won 6 in those 9 years(2 years before the 3peat & the year he came back & lost to Shaq & the Magic) 67%
    If we give bron 10 years he had a chip caliber team, he won 4 out of 10 that’s 40%
    Kobe had 10 chip caliber teams as well & got 5 in 10 years. 50%

      That's tough to say for 89 and 90. MJ was more by himself in those two seasons, Pippen wasn't ready. Obviously in '91 because Pippen sat out game 7 in the ECF against the Pistons.

      I don't think LBJ is part of that convo more like KD..Durant joined the competition BUT HE WON TWO 🏆 so we can't come for him not that I did cause I love KD too much, he is a killer within himself.
