    This is off the topic of tarpon but I hope you can give me advice on a surf rod for a fierce 3 6000? I’m a Texas hillbilly trying to learn about saltwater. Thanks.

    Would a Penn Slammer IV 4500-6500 paired with the new Shimano Teramar 2022 X-Heavy Fast rod be okay for tarpon and other big fish?

      Great question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community (www.saltstrong.com/) where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here:

    I'm a kayak fisherman...and unless one comfortable standing in their kayak while casting, a 8' rod can be quite cumbersome to deal with while SITTING in a kayak. Not only cumbersome to cast; but, because most kayak fisherman have other gear sitting vertically in their yak...other rods, net, flag post, nautical light post; an 8' rod can be big trouble if your fish begins moving in circles around your yak. A 7' rod, with all the other specs you mention, would be a MUCH better choice. And as far as casting distance; you don't mention line size at all (I realize this is a video on rod spec); but good distance can be had with an appropriate, not too heavy or too large in diameter line. 30lb. braid (8lb mono equivalent diameter), plenty strong for the largest of Tarpon, will get you ALL the casting distance you need using a 7' rod.

    What size reel would you pair the 8'+ rod with? 5000, 6000?

      You can get away with the 4500 if you're on a boat for sure! I'd go with something bigger if you're fishing from shore for the line capacity.

      Best bang for buck really has been the Daiwa BG 4500. That's what I used for the last 2 years and caught a ton of fish on that model. Served me well!

      @@Jritchey1211 Hey Justin, thanks for the video. Any chance you know where I can pick up that same Star Sequence (8' with cork handle) you focused on in the video?

      4000-5000 are probably the best but dont go overkill you just want enough in case it runs

    • @indyfosho5458
      @indyfosho5458 Před 2 lety +1

      The size can vary drastically from one manufgactuer to the next. I look for a reel that holds no less than 300 yards of 50 lb braid.... if you get a Daiwa BG 5000 thats perfect. Best bang for your buck also imo....even a fierce III 6000 will do the trick also if you want to save a few bucks...

    The difference in length between a 7 and 8 ft. rod is marginal. I mean we're talking about 0.98 ft. only ! You're telling me, that this tiny difference will make cast you more ? Lol !
