- This is an educational and historical look at one of the most notorious cases in Colorado history, the story of Alfred Packer and his party's winter survival expedition in the mountains. In it, we examine both the conveyed version of the events, given by Alfred, and the eventual findings of two separate juries. In particular, the specific law changes required a separate trial after Colorado's statehood. This is a survival story in the mountains like almost no other.

You missed my favorite part of this story-the UC Boulder has a dining hall literally named after this cannibal!! In 1970, a group of students proposed the name “Alferd Packer Memorial Cafeteria” as a joke about how bad their food was; they gained a lot of momentum & eventually got it approved by the Board of Regents!
Story is that the administration saw this as a concession to the increasingly rowdy student body, in the hopes that this would appease them enough that they wouldn’t join the nationwide Vietnam War university
protests… otherwise I can’t see why they’d approve this move. The Alferd Packer Memorial Cafeteria was given the official slogan: “Have a friend for lunch!”

Honestly morbid humor when talking about this guy is sort of expected. He’s a pretty pathetic guy who resorted to cannibalism because he had no clue about the region. Dude lied to become a guide and nature handed his ass to him for it. Shame the innocents traveling alongside him had to suffer from his selfish schemes.

I live about 20 minutes outside Montrose. Whether he intended to mislead his group or not, attempting to cross those mountains, in the winter, with the equipment available back then and with little experience in the area is completely insane and in my opinion definitely criminal. This is an area which gets some of the coldest temperatures in Colorado, and in which it is common to see people still skiing the backcountry in late May! The terrain is formidable and otherwordly, even compared to the rest of Colorado... Chief Ouray must have thought they were out of their minds!
I agree with this. Going up there was walking towards death in those conditions, guide or not. Knowing that you weren't a guide puts it at manslaughter. Consecutive sentences seems excessive, but he did escape jail and flee for 9 years, so you get the book thrown at you for that in that era instead of an additional charge.

@WhitneyDahlin they believed he was going to be lynched by a mob instead of justice being brought. I am curious about it too. He did have a lot of money on hand before they grabbed him. Maybe he stowed some away and traded the location of that to some one that mostly believed him, after being let out of course.

If their was 3 bullets left in the revolver I’m inclined to believe him especially since a bullet fragment was in Shannon’s hip, not head. However, he could have used the axe on everyone sleeping and when Shannon woke up he had to use the pistol.
I looked up the sketch. While part of me knows I probably shouldn't have, because that's a difficult image to forget, Randolph was a capable artist who clearly left details out for his own sake, and I can't say I blame him
Yup. I had to just look it up as well. I'm sure every detail was accurate as he didn't have a time limit on sketching them. If it was a colored sketch, it would actually be sickening. Something about them being stripped to the bone besides the head, hands, and feet, is extremely disturbing to look at. Because it's not natural.

Dude 100% did it. Why make up a bunch of different stories to cover up what was supposedly self defense? Reminds me of a murder case where the killer said they cut themselves doing some miscellaneous task. Eventually it was disproven, and he was like "actually, I cut myself cooking." The detective just looked at him and said "nobody lies about cutting themselves cooking."

@@rl7012 The point was that the person originally lied saying that they cut themselves doing some misc task. They LATER confessed "ok, you got me, I actually cut myself while cooking". The point being, who tf would lie and cover up cutting themselves whilst cooking? It really doesn't serve any rational/normal purpose. Hence, it was obviously another lie. I think you missed the first part where it was originally claimed to happen during something that wasn't cooking.

Mr.Ballen is suck at this kind of thing since he tend to over-exagerrated the stories by adding unnecessary details that most likely didn't happened, too lazy to put a real picture and only using stock picture instead, and not giving proper conclusion to the story and he just like "thanks for watching don't forget to subscribe" kind of bs
I think Alfred planned to take everything these guys had for himself to include their lives. Who is dumb enough to go against Chief Ouray’s guidance? Only someone who has evil, nefarious plans. Packer knew he wasn’t a very good guide. He knew taking these men into the mountains and half starving them would make them weak enough to be easily robbed and killed. He ate them probably out of necessity and laziness. It’s far harder to hunt game than it is to kill half starved people, plus, once you get high enough into the mountains, there is no game above the tree line.
To me, that just dosen't make any sense. First of all, all the men who followed Alfred was stupid enough to go against Chief Ouray’s advice, why would it be a stretch to say Alfred was equally stupid? And what a lousy plan that would be anyway. If he was a terrible guide, why would he deliberately set the men on a doomed journey across the mountains? Why would he expect to be at an advantage in that situation? Seems like that would be the riskiest plot of all time, relative to whatever loot those men would have had on such a journey. I also think that he might not have had the strenght to hunt in his condition. Perhaps he could have hunted game once he had eaten enough to regain his strenght, that's possible, and i can understand why someone would judge him for not avoiding further cannibalism. But to assume that he was a full-blown psychopath, who both carefully crafted a plan to kill and rob those men, while also being insanely stupid if he was truly aware of the danger involved, with his minimal experience as a guide. I mean, i don't know what happend. But his story, or something akin to his story seems a whole lot more plossible. Just assuming that he was satan himself because (like many others in this world who isn't deliberate cannibalistic, corpse-looting murderers) he was a bit lazy and greedy, just seems like a massive stretch, and a contradicting one at that. With all due respect.
They were GREEDY and stupid. They were so afraid of losing out on the minin opportunities that they took the risk and big Al basically got away with it

I agree overall, but don't wild sheep & goats often live or at least graze above the line? I've never seen one in the actual forest, just on high, rocky points. The Sheep eater Shoshone people actually lived very close to the Rocky Mountain treeline in MT/WY as well, they were peaceful and avoided the warrior tribes down below that way. Altho our Rockies are lower than the ranges in CO.
I have a hard time believing this version. First, this guy was a crappy guide, they all knew it and all that went with him did so willingly. Second, it would be ridiculous to think that he'd deliberately put himself in danger of being lost just to rob some guys. Third, he may have been bad at gambling but I think even he understood the odds of him being able to simply take out what? 6 or 7 others guys who were strong and rough enough to live on the trail and trudge through storms? Even he knew that would end badly for him if he tried.
I always assumed the movie Ravenous was based on the Donner Party tragedy but clearly it took A LOT of inspiration from this incident. Robert Carlyle’s character Col. Ives bears a striking resemblance to Alfred’s pictures, clearly not by accident. Absolutely fascinating! The movie is even more well done than I originally thought. Mixing this story, that of the Donner Party and even Wendigo lore from the First Nations people.

fun fact about Alferd (he likely misspelled his name when he signed his confession) - CU Boulder has a cafeteria named after him! it was the first time that students were allowed to choose a name for a school structure, and the Alferd Packer Grill won in a landslide (or an avalanche, if you will). After that we were never allowed to name anything again lol.
the school has now embraced it, though - the Alferd Packer Grill has different sections for different food, which are named things like Al's Lodge and El Canibal (the Mexican food counter).
I'm glad Mines didn't prevent such things. We named a tower Mordor.
The two towers sandwiching it are named after unfortunately named donors however. So in combination it's Gaylord Mordor Syphilis

There is one channel who is similar to this channel: Archie's Archives
Archie does cover similar stories but he seems to cover Russian and Soviet Russian scary mystery stories. Most of his involve mountain climbing as lots of tragedy happens in the mountaineering community. It is a very deadly sport. But there's also stories not related to the mountains. He has one about a Soviet elevator malfunctioning, killing 47 people and then by the next day they just cleaned it all up and swept the whole event under the rug. Didn't even reach out to the families of the deceased or compensate the injured or maimed survivors. I think one newspaper published the story but the writer met with an unfortunate case of bad luck afterwards.
I don't know if you will enjoy Archie more but he does seem to cover stories none of the other channels cover.

I find it interesting in your choice of ambient music. For caves and/or cave-diving, the ambience is the feeling of darkness, dread, and imminent danger waiting to happen posed by the fact that both areas is part of the under world never to be seen by sun light. For the history of mankind that occurred years and years, the ambience is the feeling a nostalgia and a timeless tale of people who have long since died; for some they are waiting to be discovered, and for others they were never seen or heard from again, never to be found by the present day humanity. Only God knows their last known location before they died. And the third rather eerie form of ambience is the feeling of inevitable fates and impossibilities that are just beyond our imagination. Conclusion: the choice of ambient music varies from story to story, but thats the feeling I experience when hearing these stories. You did an excellent job with it in my honest opinion. 👏
The way you not only tell, but visualize the story as well with intense images and eerie background music....it's just so captivating, I am always terrified, but glued to the video.

Everything just lines up too perfectly for his own survival, he always came up on top every step of the way and always with perfect timing.
If you have any doubts about him being guilty, just look at the way he was spending the money he stole. Zero guilt or remorse and plenty of celebration.
People usually show their worst side in tough circumstances, and this guy was already a crappy individual before all of this went down.

I think he was guilty of murdering the others, but irrespective of that, it is no surprise he spent all their money on drinking and going out. If he had been marooned in the freezing mountains for 2-3 months and surviving off human flesh, the second you get back you would get drunk and indulge in immoral ways. You would almost be celebrating your survival and certainly trying to forget about your ordeal, after potentially cheating death. So I don't think him spending their money on drink and gambling proves that much about him really.
Some people show their best side in tough conditions though too. It can bring out the hero or the villain in any of us.
So, you're telling me you took "Psych 101" in high school. And now you think you're some sorta "armchair expert". Lol. That second paragraph of yours-That's not an acceptable way to judge one's guilt. People are strange and everyone is an individual. We feel, react and respond differently. You can't expect to make that comment and have it be true not knowing anything else about that person. You'd really have to know what's "normal" for that particular individual.
I have the opposite thought. If he committed a crime like this on purpose he wouldn't be openly spending the money like that. It's possible he was in shock from the trauma and just went wild with the cash as a result.
I think he was definitely responsible for their deaths by negligence and took their tragedy as an opportunity to enrich himself. A selfish man desperate for power through money and the respect of others. Were the deaths premeditated? No. Definitely not smart enough for that. He just oversold his usefulness to serve an overgrown ego. But were his actions consistently opportunistic, self-serving, cowardly, and without remorse? Absolutely.

He probably was looking for an opportunity to steal from them, too. Not necessarily by leading them astray and killing them, but he most likely was just hoping for a chance to come up somehow.

I have a hard time believing the murder of multiple men at once was not premeditated (by the legal definition). Maybe it wasn't his plan from the very beginning, but NO WAY did he kill multiple men like that without some level of premeditation even if only earlier that same day.

The hunters who testified claimed there was plenty of food in the area, and that even an unexperienced hunter would have been able to hunt enough game to survive, to the point that cannibalism would have been a conscious choice rather than an act of desperation. But Alfred by his own admission had no idea what he was doing as a guide, and the men in his group disliked him because he was lazy and argumentative. Combine all of that with his diagnosis of epilepsy, and I think it makes perfect sense that Alfred genuinely didn't think hunting was an option, either because he was so inexperienced, or because he had already (intentionally or otherwise) sabotaged a number of hunts with his behavior and/or the symptoms of his illness, or both.
This is unlikely, as many books from the late 1800s state that unpressured deer around this time period could very nearly be walked up to and shot. If a group member was sabotaging the hunts of a truly starved group he likely would have been executed or abandoned
I would bet a lot that the last story Alfred told was the closest to the truth. Only difference is that him and Shannon switched roles in his story.
He seemed so eager to throw shannon under the bus in most iterations and i believe it is becauee Shannon was the one to continuously call him out and see right through his bullshit. I believe that when shannon was out for a bit, alfred saw his chance to kill the others, whom he percieved as lesser threats to himself and when shannon came back and attempted to fight him, he killed him too.
I have seen this pattern of behavior in narcissistic people before. They retell a story of something that happened and they cast themselves in the roles of other people and give these people all the narcissistic traits that the narcissist displays.
I have had one of these in my life and the person would regularly tell people stories that were so clearly half truths. Caught the person a few times retelling stories about them and me and woukd switch things around where things i had said suddenly were things they said while things they had said became things i supposedly had said. It was very fucked up. The person would become ansxious and enraged when i called them out in front of other people.
Alfred steikes me as such a person too. Only worse since, you know, he killed and ate people.

Fun fact, this is the story that inspired great 1999 movie "Ravenous". Glad to hear that the real Packer didn't actually turn into a flesh craving vampire thing.

Hey friend. Your work is stellar. I’m a once upon a time filmmaker/film school graduate that has settled into a regular job which I really don’t like. I’ve always loved documentaries and it seems like it’s the only thing I could do that doesn’t involve a team of people. I’m astounded that you (assuming) do all of this yourself. My main question is how the hell do you animate map routes the way you do? I don’t think people realize how intricate some of this editing really is. Lots of assets and elements going on. Would love it if you could steer me towards some helpful tutorials. Thank you and keep up the great work man.

This has been one of my favorite videos. Living on the western slope of Colorado my entire life, it was easy to picture where all of these events happened at the time and how near they were to modern towns!

He lied a lot during the whole ordeal, first just starting off with how good of a guide he would be for them. They were alone for a long time in the mountains. I'm sure there was resentment building between them. He was the cause of a lot of their distress and problems, and I'm sure the others knew or realized this. Perhaps he killed them, thinking they were going to kill him, so he struck first. And because he was so inept at hunting, he had to eat one of them to survive. It seems he had a real hatred for Shannon, so he probably ate him out of spite, too. There's even a musical about this event called "Cannibal! The Musical". I'm sure that'll get a Broadway revival soon.
I think the story Packer told was a mixed variation of lies and some truths. I believe it was a lot more lies than the truth. Too many elements that don't stand up to scrutiny IMO.

@@AelliJuniper Alfred's version is that Shannon sent him up a mountain, and when he came back he found Shannon had killed the other 4 men. So we'd have to believe that the other man somehow killed 4 men, kept their bodies by the fire, and let Alfred waltz back into camp. The truth is probably a variation on that - but with Alfred doing all the killing - one by one as they returned from scouting or foraging missions of their own - smashing them in the head because its quieter than shooting.
I grew up in Littleton Colorado, Packer's grave is right along Prince St and quite a few times was attempted to be dug up. The solution was to cover the grave with concrete which as far as I know was successful. His tombstone was damaged so a corner of it is missing to this day. Lovely spot under a pine tree I might add.

I really enjoy Scary Interesting videos so much. It's not just that these are true/factual accounts of strange & unusual occurrences. The audio storytelling is excellent. But, it's the actual photos, diagrams & maps that keep me fully engaged throughout the video.

He had poor moral character (agreed to be a guide endangering the lives of others for his own profit), motive as far as his constant questioning of how much money his victims had and his instant spending of their money on pleasures would suggest to me he murdered them.

In the case of defensive wounds on the men, along with the injury on Bells forearm. Wonder if could have been caused by one or two of the men defending themselves against Bell. If that’s the case. It wouldn’t be in conflict with either the autopsy or Alfred’s side of the story.

Honestly, I don't know how to feel about this case. On one hand I feel somewhat bad for the guy because starvation and harsh survival conditions can make you go insane. BUT I also feel like he went to cannibalism way too quickly, especially when those hunters said there was plenty of game to hunt

Why didnt any of the men hunt? Be careful what you believe during court trials, the state may have just picked people that said exactly what they wanted whether or not it was actually true

You have a good voice for narrating these stories, and I really liked the illustrations you used. It added more to the storytelling. Also, many years ago, I heard that the cafeteria of the Denver campus of Colorado University was named after Packer. I don’t know if it still is.

“Cannibal! The Musical “ was the first live action movie made by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It’s as insane as it sounds and from their commentary, it was the U of Colorado’s cafeteria; the Alfred Packer Grill, that gave them the inspiration for a musical version of the event.

With the way many of these men treated and thought of him it's no surprise that there would be a certain amount of bad blood between them. Anyway regardless of whether he did it or not (he probably did at least some of the killings) he did not receive a fair trial. He was so ill in prison that they were told he would die there if not released, but that was ignored.
I've been to Lake City and seen the marker they put up for the victims. It's a big rock with a plaque bearing their names. They also have a post from the original site in the town itself and a museum with artifacts and newspaper clippings. Not to mention the "Packer Saloon & Cannibal Grill," which does a pretty good veggie burger.
Packer himself is buried in Littleton but I haven't been there yet.

I live in Littleton and I've seen Alferd Packer's grave. It's encased in cement to protect it from vandals. I'm glad to know more of the story of his life and that he ultimately was a changed man. Thank you for sharing it!
