May I suggest that you don’t ever get brain damage. That would probably stop the learning, leaving you feeling cut off and frustrated. It has me. I am still addicted to learning but it now takes outrageously tremendous repetition to get it to stick.

Dopamine is involved in motivation, learning and motor control. Endorphin reduces pain and induces pleasure. Some things (sex, heroin) activate both systems but they are still very different: dopamine is a neurotransmitter, released selectively into specific regions of the frontal lobes; endorphin is more like a hormone, released directly into the blood stream by the pituitary gland.

@MrNomad62 this is the big question right, I wish I had some new advice. we all know exercise, socialising and eating right is important but that don't help much when you're getting crushed by some addiction. all I can really say is wait for the neuroscience to get better so we can tackle these problems properly. in the meantime... analytic psychotherapy is underrated.

  • @ChristopherHarris
    @ChristopherHarris  Před 11 lety +2

those drugs have many effects in the brain, not just on dopamine. researchers typically say that dopamine provides the motivation to continue, not the pleasure. anyway, even if there is some subjective pleasure associated with dopamine it doesn't make it an endorphin; endorphin is the name of a specific chemical structure, which is different from dopamine.

The difference between happiness and pleasure is happiness is forever. We are eternal beings, so the way to eternal happiness is being satisfied, deciding to be satisfied. The Lord only recommends a way for us to live, but we are free to choose. Through charity we can find true happiness and not be bound to an addiction. Every choice we make has a consequence, we are free to lust after our addictions or try a different way :)

Dopamine is created and secreted from the Locus Coerulus which is situated toward the bottom of the brain from a side-on view. To my knowledge, it is only created there where it undergoes metabolic processes (L-tyrosine (found in foods) > L-Dopa > can't remember > Dopamine). The locus coerulus also creates Norepinephrine & Epinephrine. Collectively these neurotransmitters are the 'catecholamines.' Hope this helped.

I've been thinking about this today and I am wondering if electric stimulation of the brain's reward system would have pretty much exactly the same effect as injecting epinephrine.

@SCAREDBANANA no... junkies (drug addicts) are locked into a highly stereotypical pattern of seeking out a few chemical substances in the environment despite destructive consequences. the dopamine system of a healthy person can motivate all sorts of complex, creative and worthwhile pursuits. the point I guess is to figure out how to promote the latter and avoid the former, and to navigate the vast gradient in-between the two, which is where most people operate.

It doesn't have much to do with neurochemical side-effects. In fact, recent studies show that the cannabinoids don't even stimulate or interact with the dopamine pathways directly, the way alcohol or stimulants might. In fact, the more likely culprits for reward-system imbalance are

You need to start very short. Just to feel how it's working. Want to try? 2 minutes? You feel it in 2 minutes!
      Here is how:
Set a timer for three minutes. (1 minute to prepare, 2 to relax.)
Sit on a chair, back straight, hands loosely on your lap.
Now, breath in through your nose, slowly exhale through your mouth till the end of these 2 minutes.
Now relax your face first, than neck, shoulder, stomach, arms, hands, back, bottom, legs and feet.
Feel the ground under your feet.
Last minute you count to ten on every exhale. Thinking or hearing things? That's totally normal! Get back to the counting by starting by one again.
Try it. You will already feel it.

100%? no. every part of the brain interacts with every other part, so until we understand the totality of the brain we can't claim to understand any single transmitter 100%. we still know a lot though, and there are some very clear differences between dopamine, serotonin and endorphins. start by looking at the functions the different transmitters are typically associated with (dopamine = motivation, learning, motor control; serotonin: mood, creativity; endorphins = pain-control, pleasure; etc).

@austinocabelro689 One of the biggest side effects of weed is that everything in your life becomes boring. That's why people convince themselves that weed makes life less boring, but actually it only makes it worse. I know exactly how you feel, I used to smoke a lot of weed, a friend of mine still smokes everyday and I have to be honest: it makes her less fun to hang around with. It's not necessary to stop smoking weed completely, just cut it down to once a week. It'll help for sure.

@pappuali ADHD is real, no doubt. But the idea of ADHD has developed into something of a disease, which has no physical symptoms, only behavioral ones. People with ADHD usually have disheveled lives. However, surprisingly if you give an ADHD person structure, the symptoms for ADHD disappear (no symptoms, no disease). Basically, training yourself to overcome common obstacles of ADHD.
