The Trip That Beat Us Ep12- We’re done

  • We have been recuperating from the bad weather in an AirBnB and hoping that Carol’s shoulder will recover so we can get back on the road. We pick a sunny day to take a walk around the village of Burneside and along the banks of the River Sprint.
The following day we have to leave the comfort of the AirBnB and lo and behold it is raining again! We park up at Arnside for a fry up followed by a quick walk to stretch our legs then head off to our spot for the night at Lakeside at the southern end of Lake Windermere.
The following morning we have booked tickets to visit Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s House. Our tour of the house gave us an appetite so we drive into Hawkshead in search of breakfast baguettes.
Next we need a walk so head up to Tarn Hows for a circuit of the tarns in the beautiful afternoon sunshine.
As the sun starts to set we head up to Walna Scar. A hair-raising ascent and forecast of driving rain for the next few days is enough to make up our minds to head home. Only 5hrs 38mins if we take the M6 toll road!

We used to go to Arnside for caravan holidays when I was a child. We children were warned about the quicksands but played on the “beach” anyway. Another year we stayed for a week in Hawkshead, it was so hot that the tar was melted on the roads. Strange that’s what I’ve remembered for probably 60 years. Went to Tarn Hows too. @MamaKim. Před 2 lety

I did reply earlier but it hasn’t appeared! 🤷🏼‍♀️ if you go again you should visit Kirkby Lonsdale, it’s a lovely village, some great walks, Devil’s Bridge, Ruskin’s View. Also just up the road on the back road between Casterton and Barbon there’s Barbon Terrace, a really quiet spot at the side of Barbon Fell, which is also a great walk. We used to climb it early and have breakfast at the top! It’s a narrow track but there are recesses where you can park, overnight too without issue, great views. Barbon is a lovely village too, good walks, packhorse bridge and the Barbon Inn is an old traditional pub. I filmed this video a few years ago, on my return journey from Barbon Terrace to Casterton. Casterton School is where the Bronte sisters went and is the school “Lowood” is based on in Jane Eyre.

Thank you for sharing your adventures with me/us all. You are both inspirational in so many ways; but the most special gift you have and share with us, is your fabulous relationship.
I look forward to spotting you one day or at least your 'Little Red Van'
Enjoy your rest, both of you. Best Regards from Preston, Lancs

Lovely views despite the rain and clouds. You’ve had your fair share. The water was so still. Like the ticket holder👍. Love frosty mornings. Wow - Beatrix Potter’s house! So immersive. Wonderful. Definitely good idea to go when it’s quiet. You can get vegan bacon and sausages Ken 🤣😂 though your baguette looked very satisfying. What a great walk Tarn Hows was. Cows in panda suits😂. Not much room for you in the van if you had George. That road 😬 Walmart Scar looked fabulous. Aw we were heading back south from Skye at the same time as you were heading back. Just a few hours ahead. Good trip. Hope all is well and you will be back on the road again soon. 😊🧙‍♂️

Another enjoyable escapade! You went through my home town, through one my favourite places and (despite the weather) took us to lots of interesting places. Beatrice Potters cottage, I never got to visit properly, when we went it was so busy, we had to abort! So I have enjoyed it through yourselves! ❤️ good one! 😊

On the subject of Beatrix Potter , if you are ever in Long Melford Suffolk, pop along to Melford Hall, Beatrix spent time there as she was related to the owners and went to their wedding in the amazing Melford Church

Thanks Carole and Ken for taking us on the journey. Time to recover and take stock and plan next adventures. I’ve learned so much from your journeys and what I want from a van when I get to build one. I think you guys know that too, I get the sense a more comfortable accommodation and height along with that ground clearance would help. Not noticed too many height restrictions that would hinder you. Take care and keep in touch.

I am amazed that you lasted 14 days on that trip. When the elements are against you it’s no fun and my van is in its winter slumbers. I am only just getting it ready for a trip to Scotland with the intention of the NC500 but that may not happen if it’s too crowded. Better weather beckons but at present it’s still cool. Look forward to your next escape.

I know how debilitating a shoulder injury can be. Fell over on sloppy mud onto my shoulder, playing with the dog. After our super fast NHS finally fixed it with surgery 10 days ago, after waiting months for the operation, after the the fall, I can now sleep well and without pain. The pain lying down was terrible before, like a horrible ache deep down in my shoulder. That was from an injury to tendons, which had severed on impact but similar pain can just arrive one day, from chronic means, just because of the aging process, with degeneration and wear. Hope Carol gets better soon !
Another thing, watching you cook a fry up in an open pan. We have purchased an SQ professional double clam style enclosed pan and use it all the time. It keeps the spatter and mess inside, whilst cooking and is Teflon coated for easy cleaning. Because it is much bigger than a ridge monkey, you can cook two people's food at once and it it was only £30.00 from Amazon. Wouldn't be without ours now, whilst in the van. Ridge monkeys are far too small.

Really enjoyed this video, especially the Beatrix Potter home. I’m a fan of her work. Oh, and the food!! Carol, I hope you will be feeling better soon. Maybe a touch bursitis from the cold, rainy, damp weather. Bursitis sets into my right hip with that type of weather due to an old injury. Might be time to see your doctor for some relief. I can hear your discomfort in your voice.

I was amazed to learn that tree roots are deep when they have to find water. I live in a wet climate so trees come down easier because they don’t have to dive down for water. We live next to a ravine and every year we hear one come down, too wet.
