I will watch any "I bought a cheap" video you release, no matter the vehicle. There's something entertaining about seeing a truly cheap car, wondering how good or bad it will be.
Same, my favourite!
a nail or gem?
It’s like vehicle archaeology 🤣
That car looked dangerous to me. Should not really be driven at all
Brake pedal travel sounds serious but your Jumper Shrinking in the wash is a Big Deal! 🤣
In Finland the main dealer wax oiled all Sorentos before they were sold to the first owner. Probably that's why mine has survived without excessive underside corrosion. Mine does also have rusted rear arches, but you can get repair kits for them for dirt cheap and they are easy to replace. By the way, it's a 5-speed auto because it has the tiptronic style gear lever.
Have you had any problems with the 4x4, I put mine on a fuse switch and for some reason won't go back in to 4x4
@@oweston89 Nope. I don't have the auto 4WD, mine has the manually engageable 4wd system.
Your videos are pure joy for me, mate. Keep up the great work!
Secondhand car prices are ridiculous in the UK since the “cough”
It's a bubble that will burst.
This was a game changer for Kia everybody took them seriously afterwards in the UK.
Bit of an over statement there to be fair. Most people don't even know the brand of most cars they're looking at, let alone if they're any good or not.
@@Cloud007. It was the first Kia that was really competitive and even rivaled some premium brands. I remember some reviewers even saying that the Sorento is challenging the big dogs, such as Lexus RX, 4runner and Jeep Grand Cherokee for way less money.
I think the Sportage was the real game changer.
It was a game changer for anybody who towed a caravan, a horse box or a small yacht. You didn't need an old Land Rover tucked away for weekends. The Sorento could do it all and be the daily driver. The Sportage couldn't do that, and the early ones were a bit ugly. The Mk1 Sorento could tow 3500kg.
@@timhancock6626 Thats not what I'm saying, the original comment was about Kia being taken seriously in the UK, not just with the towing community but the UK as a whole and I reckon the Sportage was the real game changer in that regard.
This is so so nostalgic for me. My dad had one of these for 5 years, same year wheels and all but silver. 2.5 turbo diesel manual and had full cream interior. Massive fun, amazing on and off-road, decent MPG if you drive it a bit more daisy day to day, and it only had very few things go wrong with it. In the end it had to go as it had 180k miles on it and the rear subframe started to get holes in it. It was sold and used for another year before it wasn’t MOTd since 2018 and is probably sat in a field now as the scrap marker still hasn’t been fulfilled.
What a shame, a really good motor lost to rust. Thanks for another great vlog Matt, stay well 👍🏻
Thank you HPA for giving us updates on vehicles. It's great to see the final outcome!
Amazing what £20 can do, doesn’t look half bad. 👍
Must admit, having seen the state of the chassis, I'm surprised you took it on the road - and that's before you commented on the dodgy brakes !
Can a dealer legally drive on the road a car with no MOT, when not going to an appointment for a MOT?
I was thinking the same, it'd of stayed in the car park if that was me.
@@joshua6244 no they can’t.
@@joshua6244 Invalidates the Insurance too, if you read carefully.
I'll drive almost anything, but that chassis was scary. The Sorento's reputation for rust is why I ruled out a secondhand one last September. That and the indicator stalk being on the right.
Keep these vids coming, really informative and I just love them. Might not make you money in your real job but YT gold
Spot on review as always. Thank you & keep them coming. 👍🏻
Love these videos ! Please keep them coming.
That rot reminded me of my dad and made me belly laugh.
He was a hobbyist mechanic and bought a few shitters in his time.
Land Rover discovery, floor pan rotten. Got his welding gear out of garage but heavy rain started so he went to put it in boot till it cleared and it went straight through the boot floor on to tarmac!! I’m almost wet myself laughing whilst he sent out all the expletives 😂
Incredible the rust you guys get in cars there.
Here, north of Portugal, the winter can be bad but none of my cars ever had rust (and I own a 32 year old Peugeot 309 besides other two newer cars), crazy sad for those cars.
They salt the roads over here in winter. That's what rots our vehicles.
@@johntate5050 that makes sense :(
Been doing this trip various times... It's really rare to find a sorento not wasted by rust.
But if you do... They are great cars for the money.
I can’t help watching these, but I know I’m sick
Matt. I always love your honesty. Keeps me coming back. And the rust holes 😅
That rust is shocking. Must have been Stevie Wonder that MOT'd it last year.
Yes, that amount of corrosion hasn't occurred during the last twelve months surely. MOTs are a bit of a mystery. They've moaned about the tyres (particularly the o/s front inner tread very low) on my old Lexus two years running. I don't use it much, however I thought I'd get a second opinion as the front drivers side looks fine to me. The manager of the tyre retailer measured the tread on all four tyres and we agreed with the tester that the back ones are on 3mm, inner low, but he concluded that both the front ones were fine. All of this bearing in mind that they're in the business of selling tyres. 🤔.
A lot of people have mates that’ll do them and turn a blind eye to a thing here or there
He said she was lovely
Anyone who trusts a MOT as proof of a decent motor these days deserves all they get.
@@HarryJamesBookswith respect, I don't think that anyone deserves to be ripped off or conned. If I sold a car at a fair price then it would at least be safe to drive and not about to blow up, unless it was literally scrap money of course. This is especially true at the lower end of the market where people can ill afford to spend more money on expensive repairs or replacements.
Your right, we all love these ones where you pick up these wee gems !!
After watching these videos I know that Matt loves tyres I sometimes think he only buys them for the tyres
Get his own one day😛
cause in UK you can use four total different tyres and this is ridiculous and dangerous, but nobody care, so if you find a car with 4 same tyres mean the owner has enough money to take care of it, here seems just used the car not owned
Loved that age Sorrento since they hired one in the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo! Big purposeful meaty wagon. I especially love the two tone paint on them. Good video Matt 👍🏻
my mom bought one of these years ago here in the US and she said out of all her other cars she owns the kia sorento was the best suv she ever had. im thinking on buying another for her just for fun and to add to our car collection
Another great review Matt
cant believe how tidy it came up yet full of rust ,great vids matt thanks
Amazing video educational on so many levels! ❤
Really enjoying the videos on your channel great content 👍👍
Loving the tat videos Matt,thanks.
First time I’ve laughed out loud today, thanks! Good luck with it.
Great jumper stretch technique 👍
Really good video really enjoying watching them,
Love the gift that keeps on giving line 😂😂😂😂😂👍bloody excellent...more more more please 🙏
Brilliant video as usual, although I’m surprised you drove it with almost non existent brakes and a chassis that looked like it just about to break in two!
I love these type of videos❤
Great video truthful and honest
Of all the lines I've heard you say is "I think i've shrunk my jumper" rates up there at the top I think !!! Great video !!
Having spent many years in the past driving around in cars worth a few hundred quid which wasn’t abnormal back then I love these vids. I got great pleasure getting about just as well as everyone else for a fraction of the price . The choc brown allegro was an exception but my favourite, a sky blue lada, was sublime
Love your work 👍
I love your videos. This one was quite amusing, no, it was hilarious. Thank you.
love your stuff
Another great video love the old Landy
Matt that carpark must be a long drive. When you set off at 0.25 the trees were full of leaves. By the time you arrived winter had set in 😃
Nice work.
Clannad!!! Surely you remember Robin Hood (the hooded man) 😊
Hi Matt, another very amusing video, shame the car was so rusty, looking forward to the next one, all the very best from Nick the Lexus guy, Wolsingham.
That CD you didn't know, Clannad, there a Celtic music band from Donegal Ireland. Enya was a member! Some non car Friday facts. Great video as always 👍👍
Had a rough one of these for a couple of years. 2.5d auto, really nice drive.
When we sold it, it had various faults and the start of some corrosion, but nothing major. Still see it running around now.
I'd probably buy another if I found a cheap one
Clannad is extremely well known, and you are not missing anything. It's err... Like not knowing Enya. You are still not missing anything.
Honestly I'd still clean this thing up, just out of respect. I'd maybe even do it myself because it looks like it's going to be grateful. And then just... Probably break even on it.
I love the interior. So many cubbyholes!
I always find your 'tat' videos fascinating! Very interesting what you'll find - you never know!
My mate had a Burgundy over grey which we went to Wales in (many years ago) it was a big old beast & at the time i was into sporty looking cars probably ‘cos of our age but that trip changed my mind & anything big & square looking now is more appealing…i’ve only got a old Touran which in two years time will be classed as a ‘barn find’…great vids on these kind of motors👍🏼
Good video as always..Never seen rust on parts of body and most of the chassis as bad as that on a vehicle for many years.
Looks tidy all cleaned up - shame it’s a rot box. Thanks for the upload Matt, I love your videos 👍
When I lived in the Middle East, I went to buy a Tucson (Hyundai) the dealer also sold Kia's, I remember waiting for my px deal and sat in a sorento and fell asleep! It was really that comfortable! My px deal never materialsed and so I went to Ford and bought an escape!
Keep the videos coming! Cheers!
Thank you again Matt
I always recommend these to my mates when they want a second hand offroader and see the hefty prices of all the popular ones. These and the Hyundai Terracan are top of my list for good value capability.
Cooper really good tyre, the at3 is excellent, I love that shape Sorento looks a bit like the M Class.
Plenty more tat to come! Lovely jubbly!
Had a 2005 manual petrol which I absolutely loved but had to put down after never ending rust issues. Still think about it now and again - they are really great cars
It was for the best, may it rest in pieces 🙏
I had a 2004,3.5 litre V6, petrol, it was a great car! I loved it! It wasn't a bad soft roader either, my only gripe was the road holding or rather lack of it!
Don't think i'll get bored of these..
Great Vids the Winter salt-laden slush on the Roads makes on hell of a mess the sad end to many Best of British classic cars and imports.
Another good video Matt 🚗🚙🚘👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great to see you in a mk1 Sorento, had one for 12 years , only the fuel tank let me down , replace under warrant 14 years old ! Got a later one mk2 lots of problems over the years, but still a great vehicle to use.
Great cars. Fuel tank is a common issue
Hi Matt, good video, the band Clannad are from Gweedore, Donegal, Ireland. Their songs included the theme from Harry’s Game. They also did songs with U2. Shame about the rest on Sorrento.
I really enjoyed this video. You also highlighted the plight of all small business owners: that to run a business successfully you have to go to extra lengths to bring in revenue in order to pay the ever increasing costs of running that business. And for that you have my respect.
Had 2 of these over the years, both rotted out underneath and needed back axle replacing. The XS model were great specc and very comfortable but very bouncy
Above all a very honest grown up review..
Had a diesel MK1 XT back in 2005 , was a very smart sport blue with all the blingy bits and a high spec , was eye catching at the time as not many on the road. Bit crude to drive but was great in bad weather and was reliable. Wanted a Range Rover Sport and couldn’t afford one , eventually 3 years later sold it and finally got a Range Rover Sport.
I agree with other comments that the first-gen Sorento is probably the car that gave Kia a massive credibility boost in the UK. When I was a kid we used to go caravanning, and these where everywhere at campsites. I thought for a Korean car they were pretty stylish, and I think they've aged well. Shame the same can't be said of the structural integrity! Reminds me of 1990s Fords.
Looking forward to seeing more tat on your channel.
(I am so glad Auto-Correct did NOT kick in.) 😉
The gift that keeps on giving. your right. cheaper to buy a new car then get the old one fixed.
I had a 2005 diesel XS, there was a recall due to the rear suspension corroding, you only got the recall from Kia if your car had a service history from Kia, otherwise you had to book it in yourself. I heard about it via a Kia forum I was a member of
Clannad! Cracking band, I saw them live at York uni nearly 30 years ago!!!!
Morning Matt, it is such a shame why people don't look after there cars better, as you say in the video a bit of wax oil and wood still be OK. Great video as usual, cheers Phil form Newark
We had a 2004 Kia Sedona MPV for a few years, this was predominantly used for towing our caravan. For a solo drive it would be a lumpy old bus and cornered like the titanic around the iceberg but put a ton and half caravan on the back and the Sedona came into its own and cruise up steep hills like a freight train. A brilliant workhorse but eventually Hyundai offered us to much money to px it in for an IX35 to turn down. The VED cost was getting out of control too. I was very fond of that big old Korean car, it was so very dependable, powerful and comfortable. Everything we look for in a working car.
I might have missed something Matt - but you were driving on public roads with no MOT!!?
Love these videos. As Mr Gump says, you never know what you're gonna get (in a box of chocolates or with old jalopies). This one did have that air of impending doom about it from the start though with that much rot. Hope you make a few quid on it though still.
Watching this 8 months later, and here's the update:
18 March 2023 - 103,426 miles (126 miles after the walkaround). Pass with NO advisories
13 April 2023 - last change of V5C
I'm assuming whoever bought it didn't like welding as much as their tester liked a good tip!
11:36 When you put the Will Smith CD back into the player LOL that was good
Not a fan of him as a person as catchy as some of his 90’s hits are
Keep up the videos
I'm looking one of those, I love these 😂
Seen these with multiple moose hunters. Cheap 4x4 with pretty rugged possibilities do make it a great buy
Used to own an Auto Titan and even after waxoyling it regularly the seat belt mountings did for it in the end. The rest was ok and it would pull anything like a train. Very handy 3500kg tow limit and more than once it probably towed significantly more with no problems. Shame they rusted so badly and subsequent Sorentos were monocoque and didn't have the tow capacity.
Heyo! So you mentioned at the end of the video that you only really do videos of the cheaper stuff you do(most of the time). Would be cool to see one of your higher end purchases that comes in.
I had one of these in Seoul in 2004. It was a diesel, and whilst very comfy for such a vehicle, it wouldn't pull the skin off rice pudding.
Can’t say I share your enthusiasm as being a former Kia/Hyundai mechanic
There's loads of life left in that Kia for a good DIY welder.
Hello Matt, not a bad car apart from the corrosion. Last time I saw rust that bad was on my first car, Hillman Hunter- DMB367K- got it in 1983.
Never heard of Clannad , ha ha, different generation :D Enjoyed video , thanks ;)
I still quite a few of these on the roads so thought they must've been well made, then I saw all the rust on this one, haha. They're quite good looking in my opinion.
Wow Matt, so sad the rustmonster turned it into a Kia Sorroto. Really like these chuncky workhorses. Offtopic: your vids are very entertaining, keep it up!
It's the "tat" that makes this one of my favourite channels on CZcams
Loved the video
i’d love something like this for knocking around a farm in👍🏼
"hmu" should become part of the outro - shows how hip Matt is
Matt sometimes the tyre date code is on the other side of the tyre, so don't always think that you're being blind as it may not be on the outer side. Ideally they should really be on both sides I think.
This was a fun episode. I noticed that when you braked, the resultant pulsing reminded me of the stanky leg syndrome in those wild pig extermination videos from America. A damn shame this car wasn't looked after properly. It's a very attractively shaped vehicle. Some owners have more money than sense.
Can't beat tat love the show sat on beach laughing my head of class as allways can't wait for the next piece of doo doo your going too spend an arm and a leg on
Matt’s Musical Education Time. The mystery C.D.? CLANNAD. Irish folkie type band fairly big in the 80s. Lots of vocal harmonies and reverb turned up to 11. Like plunging your head into a bucket of Baileys. Not entirely unpleasant but you wouldn’t want to make a habit of it.
These were/are excellent, especially in the most sensible XE spec with the Aisin four speed auto with old fashioned selectable four wheel drive. The 2.5 diesel engine is an upgraded version of a Mitsubishi design with timing chain. I had mine for 3 years, bought it for £1500 and not much trouble apart from a top radiator hose and thermostat.
The rear axle and suspension components corroding is what tends to kill them but there is abit of a cottage industry in sourcing good condition replacement axles, atleast there used to be.
As you know Matt, I look after my car, my 57 plate ford focus 99,000 miles about to do my last oil change as 66 next month and it’s getting harder to get under the car 😊
