Sometimes I think Paul listens to this song at home and just chuckles about how much better of a songwriter he is than everyone else that he can do the goofiest song about a milkshake in the hardest way possible and show off his talent all over it
There isn’t a human being on planet earth that can cover this perfectly. Paul was a one of a kind, and cannot ever be duplicated.
Pure McCartney tribute band got pretty close!
With the possible excepton of Screaming Jay Hawkins... McCartney was supposedly imitating (and exceeding) him with the vocals on this track.
Every song on this album is really good
You know what’s crazy about this guy is that he’s this eras Mozart. It’s hard to imagine that there is anyone else in the 20th and 21st century who could pull over 100 hits. Between his solo stuff, Wings and the Beatles you can easily put together an untouchable collection of music. He’s as important to modern music as anyone.

This album has become my favorite of Paul's post-Beatles works - he just did what he felt and let it flow with no expectations. Just a great showcase of his deep musical vocabulary.
I love the vocal range of Paul, this is one of my favourites for that, some other similar vocals of his you may have missed are, Long tall Sally, She's a woman, Helter Skelter, Oh Darling and Soily (live '76).
Always loved this. Shows Paul could sing ANYTHING.
And play anything! 🎵
And, I know this may sound crazy, but I honestly don’t think he gets the amount of credit he deserves when people start bringing up the greatest Rock singers of all time. I rarely see him in the top five, and he certainly should be imho.
My fave track of my fave McCartney album. If you havent heard him sing like this the you havent heard Helter Skelter and Oh Darlin with The Beatles
I mentioned the same two songs! 👍
And earlier, “I’m Down.”
Oh Woman, Oh Why!
@@Luizxsilva yes that too!
I think these are better vocals then those mentioned
Monkberry is a favorite of all Beatles fans.
Paul is singing about that good stuff (puff) and sprinkling it with catchy kids lyrics for his children.
This was a song Paul wrote based on his home life with his kids. It's all tongue and cheek, with obscure and whimsical references. Monk was a word he used with his kids to refer to Milk, so the Monkberry Moon Delight was a sort of fantastical sort of milk based drink or potion. It's a crazy song but so wild and hard and catchy. Note, there is an old joke about the tomato family walking down the street and the kid tomato keeps lagging behind to the point where the daddy tomato walks back to him and stomps him flat and says "Ketchup" (catch up). So the lyrics "catch up! (Ketchup), Soup and puree, don't get left behind" I think come from that.
Wow, great catch! I always thought he sang "super fury", which made no sense to me. :)
Actually it was his little daughter who couldn't say "MILK" correctly, SHE was the one who called milk "MONK"
Paul's vocals in another universe.
That's a ram on the cover. The album is officially by "Paul And Linda McCartney'. And yes Linda is background vocals.
For McCartney's skills as a rock-shouter, I recommend the Beatles tracks "Long tall Sally", "I'm down", "Helter skelter", "Oh! Darling", "I've got a Feeling" as the most intense. There are numerous others like "She's a woman", "Got to get you into my life", "Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band" or "Hey Jude" etc.
I agree. And most overlook Long Tall Sally, their most-played live song, available on Past Masters. The band's joy and tightness on the record are delightful.
Great list. “Long Tall Sally,” love it. Few people remember “I’m Down,” which I always liked.
@@CuriousGeorge1111Because it's not their song, but yes the others are great.
The animal he's holding is a ram. Like the album name. McCartney recorded this entire album in his home studio on his farm in Scotland. He played every instrument himself, and did the production and mixing by himself too. Talented man!
I think you’re confusing albums. Ram featured session players.
Yes recorded in New York with top session players
The album you're thinking of is McCartney...his first solo album.
Teah, Paul played bass and piano on this.
@@hklinker Yes, my bad. I was thing of "McCartney". Thank you...
It was such fun to experience this with you guys! It sounds like Paul was feeling free, and letting his hair down.
"Oh Woman Oh Why" has another high screaming vocal from Paul
Monkberry Moon Delight meaning.
From The Beatles Bible:
So, monk was always milk, and monkberry moon delight was a fantasy drink, rather like 'Love Potion No. 9', hence the line in the song, 'sipping monkberry moon delight'. It was a fantasy milk shake.
Ram is a fantastic album, and Linda’s vocals and harmonies are excellent throughout.
Monk is what Paul's daughter called milk. It started there and Paul took off with it.
The vocal style of McCartney on this one reminds me of the Beatles doing Helter Skelter on the White album with Paul on vocals!
I've never heard this song before. It's great!! Paul's voice is awesome! It's Linda singing backup.
Whole album is great
Yeah, that was Paul's wife, Linda, on backing vocals. Paul is a monster on bass!
OMG!!! My favorite solo PAUL song....such a GUSTY vocal by Paul....nice job GUYS!!!! Paul lived on a farm in the middle of NO where with Linda after the Beatles dissolved...(Linda on Backing vocals)
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is also KILLER from this record!
I like the raw vocals! Have no idea what it’s about! Lol! One of my faves. I sang my kids to sleep with the ballads on this one! Thanks
It's an insane song voiced by an insane character. I have no idea how he did it, but I loved him even more the first time I heard this song, the say I bought Ram.
The critics really knocked this album 50yrs ago. but th ey speak much more highly of it now😊
This album, his second solo, is amazing. Plenty of fun tunes. All DIY with some
McCartney could adopt different vocal techniques. If you haven’t heard ‘Oh Darling’, that’s worth a listen.
The female voice is his wife Linda.
Linda's daughter Heather is included in the credits for backing vocals on this song as well.
Another example of Paul's six singing voices is his mimicking Fats Domino in "Lady Madonna."
@@SpuzzyLargoPaul’s the man of a thousand voices. He has so many more than six
@@ewest14 HI! I once saw or read where Paul himself said he had about six singing voices. Whatever the true number, the man can sing!
Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul is the greatest love/gospel song ever. ❤
Agreed
You’ve got to listen to Maybe I’m amazed from his first solo album. A classic!!!!
The live version from Wings Over America is the best, imo.
I love McCartney’s voice here too. It’s so raw. Check out Screamin Jay’s version of this is also great but jeezus. Perfection right here.
Hey guys, as a lifelong Beatle fan I just love your reactions to them and the individual stuff. Monkberry moon Delight has been one of my favourites, I laughed out loud when you said, ''That was dangerous.'' Great review. Have you heard Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey?
I’ve been in lock-step with my man in the Blue Jays hat since I was 2! McCartney RULES
McCartney went this hard if not harder on Helter Skelter on the Beatles White Album great job as always guys keep them coming
This fantastic song is a musical masterpiece, sonically full, and deep. I just love Paul's scatting on this!
Great reaction! One of Paul's best, which is saying something. Have heard it hundreds of times and am still in awe each time i hear it. Best vocals ever recorded by anyone.
Love this song
This song was written for, & performed for *_his children._* That's why all the silliness throughout. No doubt he frequently performed for them & no doubt they were always highly entertained by their "silly Daddy."
Paul did sing like an animal here . I also believe he played every intrument ,not just bass !!!
Just piano and bass.
I love both your reactions to this song! Priceless.
Actually perhaps the most surprised reaction I've seen to date. Respect ✊🏻
I've loved McCartney all my life! Saw him just six years after the Beatles breakup! Brings me such joy to see you guys appreciate this after all these years! If you're interested... he has a massive backlog of music to check out!
The baddest thing Paul did was pull together a very raw Wings, rehearse and record fun-to-play songs, and hit the road playing college bars. AFTER the Beatles! Imagine you're at the Student Union when Paul and Linda show up asking if there's somewhere they can plug in. 😎
Imo greatest rock vocalist, greatest rock songwriter next to Bob Dylan and one of the greatest bassist....makes him what? The greatest!
Bob Dylan said that he's in awe of McCartney's ability to write music.
I looked at the name of this song and I had a pretty big sized grin knowing that you were going to a different zone while trying to figure this out . .RAM is my very fav McCartney album ,it is full of awesome songs ..
I liked the work of Paul McCartney when he sang in the Wings group, in 1971 after the breakup of the Beatles, the Wings group was created by Paul where his wife Linda McCartney sang and played keyboards, the group enjoyed stable success in the 1970s. 12 Wings singles were in the British Top 10 (one of them, "Mull of Kintyre", stayed at the 1st place for 9 weeks), 14 singles - in the American Top 10 (of which 6 went to the 1st place). Eight albums of the group were included in the top ten of the charts in the US and Britain, and in the US five albums in a row climbed to the top. Of course, Paul Macartney's further career was a great success, many hits were written, but I personally remember his work in Wings.
“Dangerous carnival”… that’s a great description!
This song is about a drink his kids drank --- just for fun, with the kids song. The RAM is a ram. Too Many People is a great song. Cool album, Paul.
Weird place to start but Ram is a great album!
The woman singing in the background was his lovely wife Linda McCartney! This was his second album post Beatles and after this album they created Wings with Denny Laine. This is my absolute favorite McCartney song and album and Linda compliments him so well on it.
You finally went so deep you drowned me. I don’t know this song. And yes you need to get into Wings. The best of McCartney solo.
We enjoyed it
Paul is invoking Screamin’ Jay Hawkins with this one.
I parrot others, you really need to hear him on the Beatles Helter Skelter and Oh Darling if you liked this brilliant little ditty off the classic album RAM. Great stuff. Paul McCartney is on the short list of greatest musicians of all time. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Thank y'all for doing this song. I was seven years old when my oldest sister brought this album home. I listened to this album over and over and over, and this was my introduction to great music. I always thought I was the only person on Earth that liked this song, but it is great to see so many people enjoyed it just as much as I did. BTW, this songs is on my playlist. :)
I love Paul and wings
Love every song of this album
Back vocal is Linda McCartney; his late wife. This whole album is masterpiece !
You should listen to Paul shred on Oh Darling in his Beatles days. Also check out Matbe I'm Amazed from Paul's first solo album.
Yeah, absolutely agree.
Paul played nearly all of the instruments on this album, not just the bass, along with his wife, Linda Eastman.
Love this album! The first one I ever bought in 1971 at 12/13. His wife Linda sang backup.
McCartney spilled his genius all over the place for two decades. One of a kind
The album where the Wings sound took shape - Linda's backing vocals now becoming part of Paul's sound.
My favorite McCartney song and in my top 4 songs of all time.
RAM was an experimental album. Linda singing back up.
There are tapes isolating her vocals. Like me, she couldn’t stay in tune
@@lloydbraun6026she wasn’t a trained singer but that isolated vocal on Hey Jude you’re thinking of was a live gig and it was just an off night. That is not what she normally sounds like, especially on record. Paul knew how to use her voice with his perfectly
Together and solo the ex Beatles did well.Linda mccartney harmony with Paul and Paul kills it on bass so melodic.
Not one I would have lead off with, but Paul's discography has some greats, welcome to the machine!
Shout-out to my beloved Blue Jays. Play Helter Skelter, Oh! Darling, I've Got A Feeling, Call Me Back Again, Beware My Love - he vocally rips through these tunes.
One of my all time fav albums.
Bunch of gems
Beatifulll
I have an entire playlist with just Paul doing his “scream singing” thing. He completely wrecked his voice to get the raspy sound to Oh! Darling. Check it out next if you haven’t heard it!!!
Wow, La and Che, you have some great subscribers, and some great taste--MMD is an overlooked treasure that few know and appreciate. And, bonus: it's slang for weed. The name is based on his kid's word for milk. So on the surface, he's talking about his kids drinking milkshakes, but really talking about him and Linda smoking weed--yes, that's her on background vocals.
"So I stood with a knot in my stomach, and gazed at the terrible sight
Of two youngsters concealed in a barrel, suckin' Monkberry Moon Delight"
At the end:
Hey honey, try some of this!
::suck:: ::choked, holding-in-toke voice:: What is it?
Monkberry Moon Delight!
Your "dark carnival" observation is on point.
McCartney's voice is indeed fantastic--he can go from sweet and pure, to harsh and hard. For more hardness, try Helter Skelter and Oh Darling. What I love the most about this is that--across all the years and changes--you get this music. What a delight, and a credit to you. So cool.
The moment I heard this song I realized what an insane vocalist Paul is. Like, I’m not sure he can go to these places anymore, but the fact that he had so many voices and was able to use all of them proficiently is awesome.
Ringo also had some pretty good songs in his solo career as well.
I highly recommend ‘The Backseat of My Car’ (my favorite McCartney song) and ‘Too Many People’ off this album. The whole album is epic but those two songs are extra 🤌🏽🤌🏽 ‘Backseat’ is like a movie in music form. BTW, this album (his second post Beatles) is credited to him and his wife, Linda. Yes, that’s her singing. Wings starts with the next album. And Monkberry Moon Delight is a fantasy drink he made up for his kids! 🤯
Seriously underrated for his bass playing u guys are right about the dangerous carnival feel ha wow
This is the Oh Darling! voice.
Great job guys. Love your open minds to music. The world needs more of this. Enjoy music.
I bought this album when it came out in ‘71 and loved it at the time but it got some bad reviews especially from qRolling Stone magazine who were firmly in the Lennon camp post Beatles breakup. Paul had a tough time after the breakup and Linda pulled him out of his funk. This is the second album they recorded together and it is a gem. For me right up there with All Things Must Pass as the best Beatles solo album. Paul was energized and clearly not afraid to experiment and try new things with songs like this. Thanks fellas. I knew you would love this one.
So nice to see you reacting to a deeper cut on an overlooked album.
Ah, you finally get to my favorite post-Beatles Beatle solo album. I love this, but it sounds best when the whole album is heard in one sitting. It's not exactly a concept album, but the songs tend to lead into each other.
Great reaction guys. My sister had this album, I was only ten but I loved listening to it with her. By the way my #1 Album of all time on the shelf between you.
Ram was and is an extraordinary album and MMD is exemplary. You might hear him test his lungs similarly on "Oh Darlin" off Abbey Road.
Personally it's not when he just goes balls to the wall but when he shows versatility. You might listen to Oooh You from his first solo album, merely called McCartney. The last two songs on Ram are extraordinary. He was a crooner capable of taking you back to a place you wish you'd been. "Long Haired Lady" and "Back Seat of My Car" bring nostalgic tears every time even though it's not a homecoming I'm fully familiar with. His voice makes it familiar because it exudes longing. So good!
One of my favorite solo McCartney songs, showing his incredible range as a songwriter and musician. There are a lot of great solo albums from people who left successful bands. As much as I fretted when Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, his solo career way more than made up for what else he might have done with Genesis, and he could never top his work on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as a member of a band. I highly recommend the title track from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway to pique your interest in that dense album, but I have to have some Black Coffee first. :)
These two are great. Loved this video.
Great reaction!! Just do the whole album. And yes…listen to all of their solo stuff, then listen to the Beatles, again.
Hey La n Che from Ned in Spain. It was great to hear this again after a long while. I forgot how downright nuts this song is. I agree with you guys, about how amazing these 4 fellas from Liverpool were, together and solo. Each one finally had the opportunity to play their own songs however they wanted, free from the demands the Beatle hit factory and they went at it like, guns a blazin" ! I was trying to figure out who Paul was copying and found out it was Screamin Jay Hawkins ! Screamin Jay dug it and a did a crazy cover version ! You guys should hear his wild tunes like Frenzy, Little Demon, Do You Really Love Me and many others
Ram is worth a full album reaction. Not a bad song in the bunch.
One of the main reasons why you never heard of this album is because Jann Wenner, the founder of Rollings Stone Magazine, was a fan of John Lennon. He started a campaign that favored Lennon and discriminated against McCartney. The mainstream media followed in lockstep and throughout the 70's and 80's McCartney's work was ignored or ridiculed...
HI Great Paul Mc Cartney Bass You got to do ** LET ME ROLL IT TO YOU **
You guys are the best!
He played all the instruments on this album. Wings came into existence a few years later
Hell yea
Ringo solo is the best in my opinion. Photograph is amazing! You'll love him....he still tours as Ringo's All Star Band, guy is pushing 80 and you'd swear he is 40 years younger
Dingo brings in other great artists for decades now. Currently Todd Rungren send Gregg Rolie from Santan and Journey
His first two solo albums are great
His wife Linda was the female vocalist on this. His best album along with Band on the run.
People forget that this isn't just an album by Paul McCartney. It's by both Paul and Linda. The album also bombed when it was released.
Ringo had some fantastic pop songs after the Beatles. They're just so friendly and catchy and it matches his attitude. Photograph, Oh My My, You're Sixteen.
Yes that's his wife Linda and Wings formed shortly after this. Wings had so many great albums in a row. Tons of top 40 hits but also the albums were chock-full of gems. There is so much to explore when it comes to Paul McCartney and Wings.
Band on the Run is just so iconic, but he had a ton of really wonderful hits like Junior's Farm, hi-hi-hi, Jet, Silly Love Songs, It's Just Another Day, and a whole bunch more including a James Bond movie theme song, Live and Let Die.
Listen every song of this album this album is very good it's linda the back vocal the wife of McCartney
Have you guys heard Helter Skelter? If not, then definitely do it as a reaction, please!
Ram is a great album!
All instruments by Paul
