  • We've recently been checking out the Gibson amplifiers from the fifties especially the GA20T/GA30 and of course the GA40 Les Paul amp. Let's take them for a spin with "Oscar" the '58 Gold Top W/PAF's and an Eric Johnson Strat and see what the fuss is about. We just feel like we owe it to you.

Great review. I currently own a 1955 Gibson GA-6 and I've been wanting to add another Gibson amp to my small collection. I have been looking at the GA-20, but the GA-40 sounds real nice too. Thanks for making my decision just a little bit tougher.

Yet again, another great show guys! Very informative, great playing, beautiful tones!! I have never seen a Gibson amplifier, how the hell are these amps not in every store and every rig in the land?!! They sound sublime! (OK, I know Oscar has a lot to do with the tone), but those amps sound wonderful! C'mon guys, use your influence, get on to Henry and get these amps back on the assembly line!!!

In 1969 I walked into my 17 year old guitar teacher's 190 sq ft den for a lesson after he was fired from the local music store. Along the wall mantel was his collection of guitar trophies he had won since a kid. It was so voluminous it stretched all across 3 walls. It reminded me of a collection of bowling trophies a pro might collect over a 50 year career. But they were guitar trophies and ribbons all different. How and where remains a mystery.

hello guys. I believe that flap sound you refer to is most likely bass roll off. The speaker most likely does not support all of the bass frequency. It's my understanding the low E string on the guitar resonates at 81 hertz. when a speaker does not start there ( 75 or lower in many cases) the lows flub out.
I am not an amp tech or speaker tech but I do build speaker cabs and this is just learned info to help me build better cabs. I am not saying this is definitely the case, just my belief.
You guys are great and wow, so is Oscar.

Hey guys. Love you guys and love the show. Gibson amps are really cool and under-discussed in my opinion. I would love to hear your thoughts on the more modern Gibson GA20RVT & GA40RVT. From what I understand they are supposed be excellent hand wired, point to point, class A amps and you don't see them often... if ever.
I hope you consider it guys!

You REALLY need to turn up the mics when you record these!! I have both CZcams and my Notebook volume at max, can barely hear you! I have a 48 BR-6 (near mint) lap steel amp, a 59 GA-8 "Gibsonette) blonde, a 59 GA-9T "Discoverer" (w/Tremolo), a 60 Maestro M-2-16RVT concert amp, and one of every 1960s "black tolex" GA series from the 15RVT thro the 45RVT Saturn and the GSS-100 with two 2-12 Speaker Cabs. I've been a stupid musician since 1967 (while in College).

I've got quite a collection of vintage "golden era" Gibson amps, which came in the mid-late 1950's to very early 1960's, and Ampeg amps from their "golden era", which came in the very late 1950's to the early-mid 1960's, but I digress. I wish you had included some of the 10" speaker amps Gibson made, especially the GA-18T, my favorite daily playing at home amp, although I love them all. Another 10" speaker Gibson amp is the GA-9 Discoverer, and GA-8 Gibsonette. I've also got a custom made Les Paul Jr. amp in a 1956 Gibsonette cabinet, using the original power transformer and P-10R (re-coned), octal pre-amp tube, and larger Fender Champ sized output transformer, to push that 10" Jensen. Okay I'm bragging. The GA-9 Discoverer, is the non-tremolo version, which has two 6V6 power tubes in parallel for ~9-12 watts. It's single-ended, class A, and it rocks...but come to think of it, mine has a 12" speaker, but most had 10" speakers. Gibson did that quite often with their amps, made changes as they went along, so some of them are magic, and some are boring, but Fender was like that too. The GA-15 Titan has a 10" speaker too, voiced like a tweed Deluxe, only different (Gibsonized).
    Cheers! (we miss you guys..)

Doug could really play that Les Paul. Seeing this video, makes me want to purchase a Les Paul amp from the 1950s. I already own the Gibson Les Paul jr. reissue and I got it used from the Guitar Center. Great sounding amp with an eight inch speaker. A real tone machine with this five watt amp. Surprisingly loud in my living space. Just imagine playing this amp in my bedroom and it could be heard all down to the kitchen. It has a natural breakup when I work the controls on the amp and the guitar. I could actually make it sound like it was a marshall amp. When I am playing an ACDC song called Hells Bells. Gibson should never stop production on these wonderful amps. The only thing that I could do is buy a used one from the Guitar Center. If they ever start making amps again. I hope that it is Made in the USA. Our tubes for our amplifiers should be made in the USA for better quality control and we will have a better economy. I am a proud owner of a 2009 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Plus guitar. Once I set it up right even through a Carvin amp. This guitar could sound like Guns and Roses, ACDC and even Led Zeppelin. This one is a keeper. I would practice through my Fender, Gibson, Marshall and my VOX amp with this guitar. So, I have a quite a small collection including effects pedals. I won't mind owning one of the Carvin amps that once played a few years ago at a Guitar School. It was an amazing amp and it was American made. So Doug and Pat, don't stop making videos on musical instruments. Check out the Tone King on CZcams. I got to buy a few products because of his influence. I never looked back. Peace, Flood!

Wish you would do a review of the last ditch effort to pull a rabbit out of the Gibson amp hat in the standel Gibson "sg" system. The 2 12 altec all tube super clean extremely loud with built in maestro phaser with oven knobs.i have lots of amps the sg system all rebuilt and is a tank.i would NEVER sell it, I run my hammond w/ Leslie threw it and a Kurz k2600x ,,,better than roland and I love Roland but the tube harmonics are there in the sg system in spades.

Those amps sound great. I don't know what happened in the mid 60s at Gibson, but their engineers must have been half in the bag drunk. I have a '65 Gibson Saturn GA 45 RVT and it sucks. There's nothing wrong with it. Everything is sound and in great shape. It just doesn't have any volume and doesn't sound near as good as those 50s amps tonewise. The eyelet board is full of unnecessary circuits and components that suck tone and power. I may have it rewired to take 12AX7s instead of the 6EU7s it has now and have someone remove the redundant circuitry.
