    Season 8 Episode 11 Nobody's Fault"
    House and his team face a disciplinary hearing with Dr. Cofield (Jeffrey Wright) after a chemistry teacher (David Anders), is admitted to the hospital with paralysis. But things turn bad when in a fit of psychosis and violent, the patient stabs Chase, ultimately forcing the team into a race against time as they battle to keep Chase alive in the ER. As the patient is going to be transferred, House realizes his syndrome and informs his wife. As he is on the hearing with Dr. Cofield, he is prepared to send House to prison again, but the wife of the patient arrives and thanks him for his correct treatment. Dr. Cofield sets him free, but House berates him for his cowardice as it was obvious that he would have been arrested, so he let him loose to avoid media attention.

      3:16 When Chase tells House to be objective. The look on House's face. It's devastating. He's not fully being House cos he cares too much about Chase. And Chase is telling him he needs him to be House to save him from permanent paralysis. It's a beautiful, bittersweet moment cos for once House was letting himself be led by his emotions and though the reason why is very understandable, it's rejected by Chase as not what he needs. Thus the moment also underlines how much like House Chase now is.

    • @os17312
      @os17312 Před 2 lety +215

      Taub was correct but that doesn't mean the investigator's assessment of House's role was incorrect. House was by definition not irrelevant. Chase would not have likely done that with any other boss - he felt he could with House as House's team encourages risk-taking (in this case equivalent to 'recklessness') and breaking the rules *while* having overall been unclear on whose rules it is permissible to break (the hospital's or his own). The fact that Chase said "I would do it again" made it clear that this wasn't a momentary lapse in judgement - this was part of a 'risk-taking' or 'game' dynamic which endangered the patient as well as everyone else.
      But while House may have instituted that dynamic - because it more often than not produces the creativity and boldness necessary for the complex and rare cases they get - it doesn't mean it was "inevitable" for Chase to have reacted that way. That reaction was made 'more likely', sure (though that's difficult to quantify), and it was always possible that whoever House employed in that operational dynamic would have made the same decision in those circumstances (and similarly, it was possible that they would have not).
      Yet that's not to say that House was fully (or even primarily) 'to blame'. The investigator was tasked with making a black or white judgement, but if you have to choose from the two options (presuming there were only two) of 'guilty' vs 'no one's fault' - you can't give a guilty verdict due to the aforementioned grey area. But that doesn't equate "cleanly" into a full acquittal either - 'no conviction' (or 'not primarily to blame') ≠ 'no blame'. House understood this. He meant both things: when he defended his process saying that "bad things sometimes happen, good things mostly happen", and when he apologised to Chase. He knew that Chase was collateral damage of his process and he was probably wondering if that was avoidable.
      Ultimately, while Chase's common sense was overridden by House's competitive pressures, the fact that it was not *inevitable* for every doctor in his same position to have made the same error means that the primary responsibility lies with Chase - especially when Chase is fully aware of his workplace dynamic and yet chooses to continue working there, knowing the possible risks. I think Chase knew this too, which is why he effectively 'forgave' House.
      As someone else has said on here, they both understood each other and the relative weight of their responsibilities in what happened - and if anything, House was being (on the surface) uncharacteristically generous in future episodes when he said that Chase did nothing wrong ("you reassess your life when you make a mistake; you didn't, you just got stabbed"). But he did make a mistake - and it sounds cruel but that's just a self-evident fact: consider how we'd all think of it if someone else like Adams was seriously wounded too. But House did that to try to alleviate Chase's guilt and take it upon his shoulders - he wasn't by any means fully responsible for Chase's error, but he was willing to accept the blame for all of it to absolve Chase. That's the degree to which he cared about him.
      TLDR: House established a risky process; Chase failed to apply the necessary risk mitigation; both recognised they were at fault, but House took more than his fair share of blame anyway.

  • @JeremyCuddles
    @JeremyCuddles Před 3 lety +1280

    Chase's response to House's apology was really cool. He knows showing real emotion is hard for House, so he doesn't let it linger and he blows it off in the same way House does when others show real emotion towards him. The show did a good job of showing Chase as the heir apparent as well as showing that Chase understands what House is about.

      @Lowkey Loki I don't think anyone really knows someone exactly like House. He's a character that's dialed up so far beyond 11 that he just couldn't exist. He's better seen as caricature lens though which to see humanity.
      It that sense, he really just represents a brilliant misanthrope with a heart of gold mixed with a punk rock moral philosopher.
      He loves the good that people can do, but he doesn't trust that people will do it. He laments our moral failings, but he punishes himself even harder for his own. He hates artifice, societal archetypes, unearned power and anything else that stinks of BS and (mostly speaking) the only time he manipulates someone is to try to teach them the allegory of the cave- hoping that they'll snap out of their programming. Of course, sometimes he manipulates them because he's just playing practical jokes ( and because the writing quality vacillates between episodes).

    House’s diagnosis of how to heal Chase is low key probably his finest hour. We come to know in the episode just how deeply he feels for Chase yet struggles to outwardly show it. Or does he? A doctor that emotionally compromised would never be allowed to make such drastic decisions for a patient, so House wasn’t simply “acting” uncaring to save face and stay assigned to Chase, he intentionally and literally emotionally detached himself when making decisions and theories regarding what needed to be done to have a little chance as possible of messing up with someone he cared about. If his crew had gotten a whiff of House showing emotion in said decisions, they more than likely would have interfered and doubted his ability to solve the case rationally like he normally does. And the only one who truly understood and saw through all those layers and motives behind House’s decisions regarding Chase, was Chase. Chase called House a genius not because of his medical IQ and ability to save his legs, his medical IQ. He called him a genius because he saw exactly what house was doing and why. Only another genius would have the ability to read another person like that, and is yet another of many reasons Chase was the only one capable of taking House’s place.

    Always loved how they showed house as a uncaring sob but deep down he cares for people especially if he considered them freinds

    The contrast between when Foreman's hospitalization vs Chase's. Wow.
    "Objectivity, House" says that Chase trusts House's judgement, yet is willing to guide him when he's making, by his own definition, mistakes.

    Already from previous seasons there has been some foreshadowing regarding Chase replacing House. There have been plenty of cases that were solved by Chase alone. Actually the first episode of season 1 was solved by Chase. And on this episode all the foreshadowing turns more evident.

    9:22 Foreshadowing that Chase becomes house. House holds a cane, chase held the rail.

    Chase knows how House is. That's why he doesn't get upset when House busts his chops.

    You know, the first time I saw season 8 I didn't like that much. Watching it second time though it made me wonder, how can they create more episodes without the Huddy and kept being amazing? But watching it the third time, it made me feel I love it equally to the other seasons. 😍 Of course there is a plus on season 8 that doesn't exist on the other seasons and this is humiliation of House and him accepting it much faster than other seasons. Plus in this season, House values friendship more than ever, even if he shows that He needs Wilson and doesn't say the opposite. He shows the opposite and that is the best for an amazing self-interest man that his Ego is higher than the love of Vicodin.

      Season 8 had some great moments and this ones in this video are superb. The episode entitled "Chase" ranks right up there with "Help Me" because the episode was such a treatise on House and Chase.

    When House said they were wrong about it being nobodies fault, he was talking about himself. I think Chase knew that too.

    This is definitely baffling to watch someone yell “SHUT UP!” at House and he did it immediately. Like, not even a witty response he just shut the hell up.

    While I don't doubt there's some correlation with the fact that Cuddy got axed from the show, it's easy to see through these clips over the years why so many people find the relationships between house and Wilson and house and chase so engaging.
