Sweet video! these tips will definitely help me out and you go over some of the problems that it seems like nobody else talks about. Next time you are shaping a rug, could you show us how you do it? Like when you were talking about the Dragon Ball rug and how you tried shaping that one. I'd love to see what the best techniques you've learned are and how you go about that. I can never seem to get my entire rug level for some reason.
Hey thanks for the comment and I’m glad to help! So I just put out a video of me making a rug and there’s gonna be a part 2 where you’ll see me shaving the rug down and I think I usually get them pretty level. If all goes well I should be releasing that video on Friday!

thanks for this video. i've only just started in this hobby and after 1 completed rug i can honestly say i agree with many of the things you've highlighted especially the thing with the carpet tack strips, what a load of bollocks those things are in holding the tufting fabric in place at the tension it needs to be. i've not seen the method you've suggested with the nails, but in my mind i'm thinking rolling the fabric edge onto a metal strip before clamping it onto the frame, then using threaded bolts secured to the frame to extend the frame and stretch the fabric with a spanner. not sure if that makes sense, but i'm gonna give the tack strips another try and if that's not good then i will look to modifying the frame. good luck!
Agreed! It’s so frustrating because on one of my recent rugs I almost couldn’t keep the tufting gun in a straight line due to how tightly I secured one of the sides on those tack strips! Your idea sounds like an improvement and I think I saw something similar on Amazon that I linked before, not sure if it was this video but basically it does the same thing with these little magnetic looking clips that seem to lock on.
@@towfur11 the first and only rug that I've made so far, the fabric wasn't taut enough initially and it would warp so much as I put pressure on that I couldn't go in a straight line. I had to restretch it resulting in the design being somewhat distorted in the end. 😂 I find the carpet tacks pretty useless for all intended purposes to be honest. The anchor points are mostly too far apart. If the tension can be more evenly distributed that would be ideal. If you can find the link I'd love to take a look and see if it's a better solution than what I have in my head? Thanks.

@@towfur11 wow. That's really interesting, though I can't find the process of stretching the cloth. I wonder if you can secure 2 sides of the cloth to the frame then you put your body weight onto the adjustable bottom beam to stretch the cloth before fixing it into position.

I did my frame at home, and since in Europe, we don't have such thing like carpet tack strips (at least I wasn't able to find near my place), i had to improvise and i used a piece of wood and small nails, then I bended them, so once they are on a frame, they are heading outside and keeping the cloth perfectly. It's definitely longer than what I see using people with tack strips and better for cloth
I like the improvisation, putting the nails at an angle is definitely the best method I’ve seen to keep the cloth in place, my new setup has the nails straight out and it’s been harder to find a way to keep everything tight on the tufting stand, though I will say I haven’t had the straight nails strain the material too much either so grain of salt for my method I guess! Hey so the material I’m using there is called fabric tape, I basically just put it on the edges of the back of the rug to make it look a little more clean.
hey what rubber backing do you use? where do u buy it and whats the name of it
Hey so I usually just get whatever seems to be the best deal on Amazon, I search “rug backing” and I go for the pattern that looks like little rubber flowers. Most of the backing I’ve bought is from “pillieay” it seems to be a random shop on there that has a couple other options too like white backing with the black flowers.

What kind of yarn can i use also is there loke diffrent sizes that I can and cant use? I want to make a fuzy sfot rug but Idk if that will work.
So there are a few different types of yarn, I used cotton yarn early on and didn’t really like it so everything you see that’s recent on here is with acrylic yarn which I think is pretty fuzzy and soft. I’m not sure if there’s a type you can’t use but I imagine if you use a tufting gun and the yarn is too big to be threaded then it’s probably a good idea to use smaller yarn
