With 72 submarines in service, the United States fields the largest underwater fighting force in the world. Stealthy and absolutely deadly against surface vessels, submarines are tasked with deterring foreign aggression, nuclear deterrence, intelligence gathering, and even providing fire support for land forces with land-attack missiles. But for most of a submarine's lifespan it will glide through the oceans of the world completely undetected and as they say: out of sight, out of mind. Hello and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're taking a look at what life is like aboard a submarine.
Not every man can be a submariner, and though it is a 100% all-volunteer force, the US Navy's submarine fleet has very stringent entry requirements. Individuals must be male, pass a series of academic tests, psychological evaluations, and intensive courses on the fundamentals of submarine operations. With deployments that can last for hundreds of days at a time and disaster being only one mistake away, the Navy must be confident that it is entrusting some of the most expensive weapons in its arsenal, and the hundred-plus lives within them, to only the most psychologically stable and academically qualified individuals.

US Submariner here
1. There is no longer a requirment to be male as of 5 years ago.
2. We usually replenish food at sea.
3. Were broken into 3 sets of 8 hours now, changed 5 years ago
4. We dont slam doors and be quiet so we dont get detected from other boats, not because of sleeping people.
5. The reactor itself actually takes up very little space, 1/3 of the ship is the engine room that houses alot of equipment and machinery for propulsion, water creation and air production.
6. Your drawings of submarines seems to be based off russian submarines instead of US submarines based on the conning tower design.

This was back right at the time the new 688 class was being introduced to the fleet and they weren't certified for deployment and lots of 637's were being back fitted with the new Sonar and they couldn't deploy, so we did a few back to back deployments .... This is a poorly researched video to say the least. From my experiences on fast attack subs;
1. A person has to volunteer to get into the sub fleet, but can't volunteer their way out.
2. Females have served on American subs since 2011.
3. Food is not the only limiting consumable on board.
4. All American nuke subs (except the Virginia class) can or have been refueled.
5. Watches can be 6 hours on 12 hours off, 6 on 6 off, or 6 on and 18 off.
6. Sailors know the time by clocks/watches, not meals.
7. Officers have much more personal space than junior enlisted.
8. There are 2 shower stalls for the junior enlisted, 1 for chiefs, 1 for junior officers and 1 for the XO/CO.
9. The ship's washer and dryer is usually run anytime, only lazy Sailors run out of clean clothes.
10. There are 4 toilets for the 110 junior enlisted, 1 for the JO's, 1 for the CPO's and 1 for the CO/XO.
11. The "no politics" while underway is BS.
12. The shellback initiation described is wrong for the most part.
I'm a retired Navy submarine veteran and I would have to say some of the information is correct and some of it is not. I ended up taking over as ship's seamstress so my field days ended up being a lot of time on the sewign machine and listening to music. That and a lot of off watch time. At least it was one of those collaterals that everyone likes you for doing.
Fun fact: My father's identical twin was stationed in a submarine on and off for about three years. He used to sound exactly like my dad. When he finished his job with the Navy, he sounds completely different from my father now. We don't know why, but my uncle said it was probably the pressure?
Huh intresting
Was he a smoker?
The inside of a submarine's pressure hull is at one atmosphere pressure. If they were pressurized, the crew would get the bends when they surfaced and exited the sub.
It's because the air on the surface has more nitrogen
In the sub it's near zero, so his vocal chords shrank

Why the male requirement? To prevent unwanted pregnancy?
It's no longer a requirement, but yes it is a concern and the Navy has tried everything to mitigate that (heavily recommending females to be on birth control)
Because submarines are close quarters with little to no privacy and they cannot accommodate segregated facilities.
^ yah no longer a requirement, but to expound on the birth control thing the high pressure of the recycled underwater atmosphere is known to contribute to birth defects and result in difficulties with pregnancies that may require emergency evacuation. Not to mention that to have separate living quarters would take up more space etc

This is video is lies.
- Our submarines were powered by steam that had to pumped from land into the submarines by a large rubber hose.
- Our submarines had gull wing doors (like a Mercedes) so it was difficult to slam them.
- Our crews were comprised of both males and dolphins of all foot sizes and head circumferences.
- We usually fished for food using Scuba gear by holding onto the outside of the moving submarine with one hand and onto the AK-47 with the other.
- Shifts usually lasted 23 hours with 6 hours sleep followed by the same the next day (some times they lasted for 53 hectares but these were less common)
- Even though I hated my time on the submarines, I enjoyed it.
- All hail the Principality of Sealand.

some of it is accurate but it's hard to describe in a short cartoon video exactly what it is like. It's a military job, forward deployment, constant threats abound and constantly at war with the unforgiving sea. Casualties happen even in peacetime on board a sub.... yep, a lot can and does happen down there. Punched holes in the ocean 1989-1994.
3:08 animated hand motions are subliminally letting us know that "fapping" goes on in close sleeping quarters and everyone on board knows it.

@mmfrnt1 You might NOT sleep very well at night if you knew what we were doing at night - in port somewhere…..🤔
Halfway night was awesome, usually on that Saturday Night close to half of the patrol!
I was the detriment to the SSBN 742 USS Wyoming Gold Crew from May 2007-May 2010, the most hated on the crew and ALL OF SONAR!
I'm going into submarines via the NUPOC program... Gotta love an inspirational video!
I was in the RN. Our terminology differs somewhat from yours.
The only thing I resented about being a submar(r)iner was the lack of proper jollies. 3rd sqdn being at Faslane, we got all the sneakies. But I tell you what you can't beat, is coming out of a machinery space after the First watch and, when on the surface getting permission for 10 minutes on the bridge.
The Adriatic was fascinating. You could see both coast lines lit up. But the best was inside the Arctic Circle with the sea flat calm and not a cloud in the sky. The waves glittering as they broke across the bow.
The most emotional thing though was laying in your bunk and hearing whales singing.
We once swam in the Med out of sight of land. Diving from the forward planes and climbing up a rope ladder. Sea so clear you could see right under the boat. A migrating sparrow landed on the casing until it got its breath back and then took off again towards Africa. We all cheered it on.
Did not like the under ice.
Plus not many contacts STS2SS
MED was great LOTS of contacts
The run thru Gibraltar in and out was insane.

@@pigboat659g6 I was in Gib 4 times. The only non British port we seemed to land up in. The 3rd time, the Navi skippered a PAS boat and took a bunch of us across to Tangier. We were there 5 days during which time I managed to lose my cherry and my wallet in a brothel. The taxi that took me to the brothel was waiting to take me back to the boat. I paid off the driver with the last of the British beer we had on board. I gave him a dozen cans, panicking a bit. I later found out that he would have settled for one. Oh well.
The last time, I nearly missed the boat. They were lifting the gang plank as me and my mate jumped on it. There was beer involved on that occasion too.

Actually, it is the smell of the sea that stinks when the hatch is opened after being dived for several weeks.

The world stunk!!! I got headaches from the "FRESH AIR"
Water tasted like a chem lab.

But the internet knows more.
Joe Turner I agree, brother. After 70 plus days under, fresh air smells like shit for the first couple of hours. Then, when you get home after a patrol or deployment, when you open your seabag, you almost gag from the boat smell (diesel, metallic, bilge).

same way I handled standing 12 on 12 watch rotation for 7 months. Life in the Navy is hard regardless of ship type.
8 years in the Navy. I feel like my life has been taken from me. If I had my time again I would have done it differently
What did yo not like about it? Do you regreat the Navy entirely or just the what you did in the Navy?
no body forces you to.. but i think people should take advantage of the time and study their arses off.. be the best person there and not worry what other people do. in fact better you knew your job the easier it was. it was VERY difficult working a second job.. almost impossible.. and very very difficult going to college while in the service. higher your rank was easier it was tho..
Its service. Think of it as that and let the rest go. 👍

How's your mom and and MOST of my kids?
Did this for eight years. Not that bad though your “personal” time is usually spent on quals or cleaning something. The most annoying part was the lack of oxygen. In order to help keep the fire risk down they hold the percentage of O2 down from around 20% to 12-15ish%. Made for some interesting nightmares.
I love this “personal” time LOL
In the shitter, or your bunk (if you saw it)
If you had a headache, you just went to the O2 bleed in a compartment and inhaled for awhile.
17% is as low as i ever saw it. It was a pain in the ass to light a cigarette.
@@lejont We couldn't get a cigarette to burn, but by golly, we sure had a lot of fire drills lol
@@lejont went to 15% before according to atmospheric monitoring. Things really suck at that level. Loss of appetite and insomnia 😒
STS3 SS,SW sub vet here. We don't slam doors or talk loud aboard submarines because it is detectable by other submarines using sonar at ranges in excess of 1000 yards....
God bless them. I can't do it.
Weeks without sunlight? Bro, I already get less sunlight than that.
Sounds like a nightmare...I respect anyone who does this! Thank you! The Navy like all branches is vital to national security.

Only 100 days...... Am working 6 months and this is my 4th year in a row
My maternal grandfather was a US Navy submariner. He never talked about it.
I have so much respect for those who serve on subs! I could not do that. One other detail: oxygen itself is deliberately kept low to minimize chance of fires.
You know how the navy separates the men from the boys on submarines
With a crowbar and a bucket of cold water
A submarine goes out with 120 men and comes back with 60 couples.
When a fellow leaves the navy he leaves his best friends behind.

none of that that i saw in the old days.. dunno now.. the rules have changed.. but in general your supposed to maintain professional relastinships on the submarine.. so I doubt it's acceptable conduct. even tho they added women. and men who think they are women. it's not the love boat..
Just a big shout to all the Submariners and Naval Officers. You guys are awesome .... 😍

Don't tell me that he is reading 100days old newspaper.
yep.. and .. aother question ot ask is how many times..
I enjoyed my adventures on a carrier 4 years worth. We were there to work not for leisure. Ever couple of weeks the flight deck was open for everyone to take in the sun. The personal connections with your crew is what makes or breaks your enjoyment of being deployed. I truly enjoyed my time. If I had to do it over I would.
agreed 100% with that.. it's not how bad the job is.. it could be the worst job in the world.. it's the people you work for and work with that determine how bad a job is.
I served aboard SSBN 655(G). It was a boomer vs a fast attack boat. I loved it!
sick puppy...
My dad is on the USS Connecticut SSN22 right now. I don't think that most of this video is correct. I guess it depends on the sub? The Connecticut is a fast attack sub but still 350 feet long. Idk all he does on there other than like artic training or something but this video definitely got the sleep thing wrong. I remember him saying he'd wake up after a 36 hour shift, taking a 45 minute nap and then going back for another 36 hours and then going to sleep for 22 hours. But I think normal watches are like 6 hours.
I've heard stories of people on watch with weak stomachs and small bladders who would piss in the bilge funnel or take a shit in a bucket behind the switchboards. Some dude shit his pants without having watch relief.
Every day you clean the boat. Like religiously. My dad always said that after a 6 month deployment you could tell who a guy was by their shoes. That's how close quarter it was and how close you were to any one person at any given time.
