    Hey,
    I thought I'd round-up the biggest questions I still had after watching Covenant. I've seen the film twice now, and did our review. It's proved to be as divisive as I thought it was going to be, but regardless, we've all had fun debating and discussing it in the office this week.
    Here are the biggest unresolved questions and I've woven in some fan theories as to how things might connect with Alien (1979). If you've got any of your own theories, I'd love to hear them, so leave them in the comments below.
    Cheers,
    Krupa

      IGN perhaps that was the only civilized or part of the engineers? They don't seem to be any female engineers. Perhaps there is another god like species beyond them that created the engineers for part of some kind of grade development that hold some kind of immortality?

      IGN Gentlemen, sad to say Covenant is a mess... A regurgitation of previous ideas. And yes, the Queen is not there, because while Cameron expanded the Alien universe, Covenant Just ignores everything collectively built and reduces the Alien universe to a narrow circle. Do not think they Care about these questions, but given the huge number of people fairly complaning about the points you rise here, they Will certainly find a way to fix this derailment in the next movie. However, the mistery of Alien is lost

      Aliens had a lot of suspense. It was not a horror movie for obvious reasons, people would just spend a lot of time comparing it to the original, and well, I'm glad James Cameron decided to up the ante and go down a different path, and by doing this he made one of the best sequels ever been made.

    The engineers he killed in Covenant were not the engineers who made the black goo. They lived in a Rome like time, very primitive. It's implied they saw the other engineers as gods, as there was the docking station left behind, and their reaction to seeing david's ship return. They were most likely seeded on the planet by the other race of engineers.

      Perhaps the sub-eng. colony have passed the test unlike Earth and are tech-less like the Amish, but serve a purpose and are taught and given tools for making things for the prime engineers! Goo bomb canisters, Helmets, suits, ships,!

    i have a question:
    SPOILERS
    so in the end we find out david "killed" walter.
    But when they are back on the ship, ripley knockoff walks up to him and sees he is trying to fix a scar on his face and helps him do so.
    Shouldn't she know that the more recent version (walter) can heal itself? isn't that the kind of thing that should show up in a briefing before the mission?
    is it really reasonable that she didn't know that?

    • @messy8424

      i'm not sure though...i mean i get it, it's a movie, some things need to slide, but walter is in change of essentially making sure they get to their destination alive, you'd think there would be some training to make sure you know what to do if the android malfunctions or whatever.
      maybe i'm being nit-picky but during that scene my brain was screaming "NOW SHE FINDS OUT!"

  • @ZMastahInGame
    @ZMastahInGame Před 7 lety +257

    The biggest thing to bother me in covenant is simply the stupidity of the crew..
    couple examples:
    "hmm, there is no 'animal' life in this planet - better touch and smell this weird looking mushroomthingy",
    "I watched you 'bond' with the hostile alien being and I'm pointing my gun at you.. oh what you say these eggs are perfectly safe and I should examine them, okay!" &
    "There is unknown speading and deadly biohazard on the planet where we are, GET US BACK TO THE SHIP NOW!!"
    I'm not saying I have better solutions for these but I wish that the movie's events would have been built better than apparently budget cutting the interviewing & training part of the crew. Enjoyed the movie nevertheless but definitely left me with a big WTF

      ZmastahInGame: It's pretty easy to explain why they decided to do this. It's because they are lazy. Let me explain. When they introduced the black goo, which can do almost anything, like pretty much. And if you then throw morons into the mix, you have total chaos, and anything goes. There doesn't need to be any deep story behind it, or any proper buildup, all they do is to add jump scares whenever they feel appropriate. But thing is, when you have characters that are so stupid as we have now seen in Prometheus and Covenant, i don't care if they die, i say Darwinism have it's day, i hope they all die.
      In Alien and Aliens almost everything makes sense, in these two latest movies, almost nothing makes sense anymore. And worst of all, the alien, scary and dangerous as it was, it's easy to admire it for what it was. Now it's just been degraded to a mix of black goo, done by a human created android which had a god complex. Jesus, as i said, anything goes. You can just write anything, and it becomes a movie in this franchise now.

    @TheProphegy Před 7 lety +18

    From the start of the film, it's clear what the theme is. Creation. "If you created me, then who created you?" David is meant to follow orders and serve his creator. He's not meant to create. He became hellbent on defying that. "I'd rather reign in hell then serve in heaven." He created the perfect species. He became a god to them in his eyes. He wiped out a civilization and created a new one.

    • @deeamerson
      @deeamerson Před 7 lety +1

      David wasn't created to serve... he was a free thinking A.I. . This was established at the beginning of the film when Waylen was talking to David, it wasn't a random conversation, he's was giving David a Turing Test ....
      Also, David elaborates on this in one of his Rants to Walter, and further elaborates on it through out the film. That's the reason the company made Walter different in the first place, which Walter mentions.
      If he was truly made to follow orders and serve, then he wouldn't ask question about creation.

      +deeamerson david was certainly made to serve, as demonstrated by Weiland demanding david pour his tea for him. However, weiland obviously realizes he gave david too much free-thinking ability. walter says so by explaining to david their differences. so david was a bit if weilands mistake.

      Amit Prasad two reasons for that. One, you could look at it as the first "trial" of making the alien, and David goes on to research and perfect it. Two, keep in mind that this movie was NOT the one Ridley Scott wanted to make. His ideal movie would've connected better to Prometheus, but the movie studio told him he has to ditch the Prometheus idea and just bring back the real alien. He tied it in as best he could, but it left some gaps.

All aliens look different depending on what race there born from and how david designs them.

    Prometheus wasn't flawless by far, however covenant took everything that was good, all those good ideas and used it to be lazy in the writing of covenent. The Engineers was a brilliant idea and I found really interesting I couldn't wait to find out more and learn more about them and why they needed to make the alien as a biological weapon in the first place but by making the aliens creator David is just so damn cheap and lazy in my opinion.

      Aaron Sanders No. We don't care about David! we wanted Shaw to get some freaking answers from the Engineers! We didn't want a poor rehash of Alien.. everything was hastened and all of the lore and facts we documented as fans in this franchise has been thrown out the window because of this film.. the chestburster is off and goofy looking! it has long arms? it can now fully develop into a Xenomorph in 10 minutes? The crew decides to embark on an uncharted island and don't wear hazmat suits? even the prometheus crew wore a suit. lol.. the amount of questions and nonsense this film makes..

    • @ryanmcdonagh420
      @ryanmcdonagh420 Před 7 lety +5

      Exactly Aphotic Apathy. Aaron Sanders, extending the details would have had us venture more into who the Engineers really are? Why they are constantly making and destroying life? and more questions like that. Any extra screen time gives a more compelling story dynamic for that character or any character, but that doesn't mean its good writing or a good plot mechanic. They just know that David is a tool they set up and instead of create a new interesting plot with Shaw and David they just made David Evil like they have with nearly every other Synth in the Alien franchise and know it worked well then. Before there was nothing evil about David in Prometheus just that he was a cold Synthetic that doesn't mind killing people for what Weyland Yutani designed David for. To obtain Alien life by all means (Which is stated in the first, and third alien Film and Prometheus itself)

    • @ryanmcdonagh420

      They took an amazing mysterious set up that was Prometheus a film about creation in a world we love and where the alien is not the higher plot point for once and instead of follow this they just went, ah screw it lets just do what we've always done. evil Alien, Synthetic Robot that seems nice and then turns evil last few remaining crew alive kill alien by blasting it into space and bobs your uncle rinse and repeat.

      Exactly. I was so looking forward to this movie as I really enjoyed the Prometheus setup. When I walked out of this movie, I could not believe I waited years for such a disappointing story with little to no character development. You realize a film is in trouble when you don't care about the characters being killed. I Admire Ridley Scott, but feel he mailed this one in so to speak. Time for some fresh talent in screenplay development.

  • @Ryan-ue9ve
    @Ryan-ue9ve Před 7 lety +14

    Here is my theory, In the beginning of Prometheus we see a class of engineers that appear to be seeding planets through sacrifice and what resembles a religion. although the DNA process seems to jump start evolution, we know that in our case it still took millions of years. so these engineers are really really old, but they continued to communicate with us until about 2000 years ago when all of a sudden they decided to bomb us. based on the TED talk from Prometheus we can gather that the theme has to do with gods giving the humans technology aka fire and humans using it to become gods themselves. so i assume that 2000 years ago we branched away from the engineers philosophy of thinking and gained a desire to build technology ourselves. i also believe engineers are not just seeding planets but that evolution through this seeding process will have a pinnical design and that humans will eventually evolve to become engineers but any divergence from the religion will result in the evolution of the xenomorph.
    so it goes something like this, engineers are seeding the universe with a process that will eventually lead to the evolution of apes, humans, sub- human-engineers, then eventually engineers. but this process requires that through all phases no one is allowed to build technology which has not already been developed and handed down, otherwise the species will eventually develop a need to experiment with the "black goo" and mutate it, or mess with it so that it becomes something evil aka an xenomorph.
    i know i know, but wait humans didnt create xenomorphs, David did. well guess what david is, he apparently is very human in design, in fact it is the very reason that they discontinued his model. you could say, that eventually a human would experiment with the black goo and design the xenomorph themselves, it is in our nature.
    this explains why the engineers on the planet dont quite reassemble engineers we saw in Prometheus. they were in the phase between human and engineer, look at their eyes. this also explains why these sub-engineers dont have massive buildings and technologies that clone our own, they live in a 2000 year old era of buildings. this also explains their mural of the xenomorph in Prometheus, it was a warning of what could happen (what probably already happened at least once) and a constant reminder of what the black goo will do in the wrong hands. it also explains the earth like vegitation in convenient, everything evolves in the same order with a ending pinnical design of the engineer. it is a very smart way to insure the expansion of your species, you have constant seeding volunteers, a process that expands millions of years. it is a way of insuring that your species never goes extinct, but you need black goo to destroy so you can create or in Prometheus case, destroy a flaw that will lead to destruction.

      GAME OVER "WE HAVE EVERY PIXEL COVERED" I read this theory somewhere that as the engineers were the evolved perfect beings that were also immortal. Being immortal also meant that they now cannot reproduce. That's why when Mr. Weyland meets the engineer in Prometheus and asks him to make him immortal and sees Weyland's creation David which is an immortal sterile being, he loses it. That's why there are so few engineers left because they cannot reproduce. And as to why they created humans is because they wanted to evolve into something that can reproduce but did not like the end result and tried to go back to their previous iterations of evolution that can reproduce that is the xenomorphs. That is what was stored in the planet in Prometheus their unevolved ancestral genes. That's why everyone in the engineer's city were so desperately waiting for the ship that went looking for their salvation but instead turned out to be their doom...

    My biggest takeaway EVERYONE is missing. The engineers. They are not the creators of the Xenomorph. But they are responsible for the evolutionary history. The ancient history. The murals of Prometheus prove as much. Here's the ultimate confirmation though. In the prologue, David claimed he learned of their ways. David never saw what became of his work on LV-223, in fact he never even saw the Deacon. If he never saw this how would he even know to start in Covenant. David must have learned that the engineers were attempting to create the perfect organism, but they did not succeed. They idolized the concept of the perfect organism as seen in the mural, but they could never achieve perfection. David is the perfectionist. The creation of a creator has become the perfectionist of creation. That's the level of theme work at play, but it also means that David did not create the species, he guided its progression.

    David did not create Xenomorphs! Several pieces of evidence point to this. One of the more recent pieces of evidence for this is the Xenomorph artwork on the ship of the Engineers in Prometheus. Xenomorphs have their own home world and as you pointed out are different from the Xenomorphs David creates and the Neomorphs that are a result of his experimentation. All of the xenomorph varieties we see in this prequel trilogy are a result of the biological weapon the Engineers were going to unleash on Earth, which is some combination of Xenomorph DNA and the Black Goo (which the Engineers used to create life on Earth).
    Also, the Space Jockey had a chestburster come out of it and Xenomorphs need some biological matter to reproduce, so not likely to be David and is widely accepted as being very old.

    The biggest wtf question is that why didn't the crew of the Covenant wear at least a gas mask if not a fully protective face gear so as not to let bacteria or anything harmful enter their system. Breatheable air is one thing but it doesn't mean a safe environment; just think about allergic reactions on our Earth or the spores inhaled when opening an ancient tomb. While I know it was one way to advance the plot, but in a sense it was one of those things that made this film spiral down into the category of cheap horror films with violent scenes for the sake of nothing but violence. While the film's opening and closing acts were pretty good, the middle, the gist of it turned out subpar, sometimes even comical with scenes looking as though they were taken from a bad zombie film or something. While I like gorefest in its own context, it didn't fit so well into this film I think.

    I only watched Alien: Covenant once and I can already give partial answers to those questions. (*SPOILERS AHEAD*)
    #1: Indeed Shaw and David were searching for the Engineers' home world but maybe the planet where this last movie was set in is one of many planets that were colonized by the Engineers, and Shaw and David first decided to arrive here just to gather more clues.
    #2: David's true intentions were hinted in the flashback at the beginning of Alien: Covenant. After realizing he'd live longer than his creators, he thought that maybe he can surpass them by also creating life, just like they did with him.
    #3: Sure David needed an Alien Queen to lay those eggs, and we got a glimpse of what happened to Shaw. So there you have it. David experimented on Shaw's body to make her the very first Alien Queen.
    #4 & 5: Scott already mentioned he's got a few more Alien movies planned that will directly connect these prequels to the original movie, so it is yet impossible to accurately answer these two questions.
    #6: this one is connected to #3. These Xenomorphs are not the same as the original simply because these are not fully evolved since they weren't born from a fully developed Queen.
    I hope I was clear enough to not leave any more doubts. ;3

    So I think I have an explanation for David eradicating only a single city. Based on the lack of other ships visibly present in the city, the fact that no reinforcements came to the cities aid, and the fact that David remained on the planet without taking his experiment to other locations; I think that 1) If there are other engineers on the planet, they are significantly distant from that city. 2) Given the reaction that the city engineers had to the ship (praise) those ships are likely few in number at least on the planet and difficult to build. 3) The storms likely hid what David did to that particular city from other cities on the planet.

    Months before Alien: Covenant, I suggested here on CZcams, that the Space Jockey in Alien is gonna be ret-conned into actually containing David's dead husk, OR that of Walter. I also wrote that it would explain how the xenomorphs became biomechanical. I suggested that the species maybe had evolved enough to utilize an android body to gestate, and that David may have used Walter or even intentionally used himself as a host to truly being the father/mother of the perfect organism.
    I also theorized that this could have been why why Ash went insane on the Nostromo. Ash was an android, and the Alien was hatched from related android technology and may thus have been in some sort of wireless communication with it.
    Now that I've seen Covenant, I'm even more sure that this is the direction the franchise might take. I don't know if I saw it correctly, but right after David "unplugged" Walter, didn't he also insert something into his neck? There was a brief shot of Walter's neck and how something seemed sink into the laceration right before it closed up again. Or was that just to show how Walter's skin is self repairing and giving hint that he was gonna soon be functional again? Nonetheless it's a smart way of leaving the playing field open for a lot of possibilities - such as David attempting to insert some kind of egg into Walter or something of that kind.
    Anyway, you're welcome IGN, I take full credit for the idea that the Space Jockey on LV426 is actually David. Or Walter. :))

    Answer : They forgot about continuity and don´t give a shit about the previous movies and fans and only care about milking the cow, not caring if Ridley Scott´s ideas are ludicrous, because it fits the purpose. The space jockey will never be no "engineer", Prometheus is a movie apart of the Alien series and Covenant is a product of a senile director once brilliant. Alien and Aliens are the only things that matter regarding this already dead franchise. I´ll keep with those and the mistery will go on forever and like most things in life, is better not knowing everything. That´s the fun of it.

    2:55 The novelisation by Alan Dean Foster appears to have David state that he merely found the Facehugger as an engineer curio rather than created it himself from scratch. So while the xenomorph as seen in _Covenant_ - rapidly emerging, rapidly evolving - is definitely his beast, the species as a whole may not be. I haven't had an opportunity to see the film - I understand this brief throwaway implication didn't make it in - so we'll see what film canon as opposed to official novelisation canon has to say on the matter in my perception.
    While not everyone will agree, I tend to go with the novelisations as the ultimate authority, personally - they include all sorts of little snippets that get cut from the film due to pacing and run-time concerns, but which might later appear in a director's cut or deleted-scenes collection (Cf the bits in Aliens about Ripley's daughter dying while she was in hypersleep plus the bit with the remote sentry cannons).
    If this turns out to be correct (or if Scott does an about-face and decides to run with it), then the Space Jockey is indeed potentially a separate beast - perhaps an Engineer sent out long ago to carry or retrieve Facehugger eggs and who fell afoul of his cargo. Or maybe the Engineers are no more than the Space Jockeys' inheritors, modelling their flight suits after the SJ form... We shall see.
    I feel this line of thinking addresses many of your questions.

    Ok, here are some of thoughts on how to explain some gaps in the movie (just my opinion):
    The planet is not the home world as the technology is primitive except for the docking structure. The engineers must have cared for them from time to time, hence the docking station installed by them to aid the visits. The arena was like a mega helipad and in the flashback, the locals were excited that their gods are back. When the bombs were dropped, Shaw must had fought for control of the ship and therefore crashed it to stop David from destroying more inhabited planets.
    On why the goo didn't turn the locals into alien hybrids is because there was too much goo in the attack. This is like the calcified remains from Pompeii due to the intense reaction of a boat load of goo.
    A more sinister thought is that the goo might not had kill every one on the planet but the survivors were being taken by David and experimented on, hence all the body parts in his hideout.
    On David's intention on the destruction of humanity, I thought it was answered in first movie when he said, "don't every son wants to kill his dad?"
    The Covenant crew, like the Prometheus crew, view the use of the space suit as a tool of survival and hence as soon as they don't need it to survive, they don't want to use it. It will be a common characteristic for pioneers / risk takers. The crew also trusted their technology too much, thinking that the scan showed the planet is safe to explore and that their guns will adequately defend them.
    The crew are used to Walter's obedience and mistakenly thought that David would act the same way to them.
    The reason why David didn't intervene in the final fight scene in Covenant is because he was hoping that his creation will be the superior life form by beating his creators. Also want to make sure in the likely scenario that Daniels win, then they will trust him well enough to go back to hyper sleep without a fight (increasing his chances to achieve that perfect organism).
    On why David had his chin stab wound healed and knowing Walter's codes, I think he must had realised that in order to really replace Walter, he must take his processor chip to inherit his healing abilities and his ID codes. Maybe the chip don't have the memory hence why he got busted in the end.
    Let me know what you think. Like to see what other theories are out there as I am a big Alien fan.

    Alien Covenant is what happens when movie directors are allowed free reign on creative control of all aspects of a movie with no oversight.
    Based on the ending of Prometheus, many of us were thrilled at the concept of Shaw and David flying to the Engineer's planet and seeing their adventures there. Make no mistake, the Engineer was THE most fascinating character in all of Prometheus, and we were all left wanting more.
    Yet Ridley Scott decided against that, made the journey to the Engineer's planet almost an after thought with a few minutes of screen time (and no Shaw), and made Alien Covenant practically a remake of Prometheus. Same scenarios of stupid people doing stupid things to get themselves killed and infected, all on a foreign planet. So boring!

  • @OkamiOni
    @OkamiOni Před 7 lety

    One of David's Face huggers is going to get on one of the Engineers that look like the ones from Prometheus. Thats what is going the give the Xenomorph the biomechanical look. I'm guessing somewhere in the storyline the Engineers from Prometheus is going to get their revenge for what David did on that planet in Covenant. Also there is a big difference in the way the Engineers look in Prometheus and Covenant

  • @BilliamBusey
    @BilliamBusey Před 7 lety

    So there's the mural in Prometheus, clearly depicting a xenomorph, and then there's the scan from Alien indicating the Derelict was 20,000 years old. My theory is that David didn't create the xenomorph eggs on the Derelict. It's possible that David never has any direct involvement with it.
    I don't think David created the xenomorph so much as rediscovered the species, or at the very least created a similiar strain (due to the obvious physical differences I think this is more likely).
    What I think is that David saw the xenomorph depicted on the mural and has been attempting to recreate it, thinking it is the perfect organism. The way he raises his arms when the chestburster emerges, and the xenomorph mimics the gesture, resembles the pose that the xenomorph in the mural was in. And David seems very happy about this. Just a thought.

  • @gavinchapman4390
    @gavinchapman4390 Před 7 lety +1

    There is no queen alien, Ridley Scott has stated awhile ago that the queen isn't canon. That would mean that Aliens isn't a real sequel to Alien. The closest thing to a sequel would be Alien Isolation. As far as how the eggs were created in Alien Covenant, David experimented on the corpse of Shaw, using her reproductive system to create the egg. And how Xenomorphs create the eggs is by reconstituting dead biomass and forming the mass into an egg. This is seen at the end Alien.

    I have feeling because David WAS so close Weyland and a 1st of his kind. His protocol was to collect the most advance species he could find to learn fromh. When he saw the mural on the ship in Prometheus, and knew he was going to the engineers home world, he would use them as guinea pigs. David is severely flawed because of Weyland. His fascination to create and play GOD is why he looked down on Walter when he was teaching him to play the flute. I don't understand why she never asked about the questions on the ship before even thinking about going back into stasis. How did David even have those type of Embryos in that form in the first place, with no type of lab? WHERE TF did the pods come from?

    My idea for a third alien/prometheus movie is as follows:
    The engineers are the main characters in the movie and comes to the planet that was in the Prometheus movie.
    There they find Weyland inside the crashed spaceship. They have a blue elixir which they empty all over him and bring him to life.
    In the next part they arrive at the planet from alien covenant and find the other robot(Walter) who is david's twin.The engineers use the blue elixir and repairs him.
    Once awaken the engineers and Weyland get to know all the horrible things that David has done, and weyland says "we have to stop David" .
    They set course for origae. When they arrive,they scans all the planet,and finds the planet is full of hostile organisms except
    on a high mountain where they discover that there are humans inside a cave.
    Inside the cave they meet a herd of children, who tell that when they had lived on the planet for over ten years,
    they began to be attacked by Xenomorphs and all the adults died or were turned into these creatures.
    There were also great giants developed by someone the children calls David.
    The engineers get ready to wipe out all the Xenomorphs that David has created, but the great giants manage to escape with one of the engineers' spaceships.
    The engineers and Weyland hunts the spaceship and manage to force the spaceship down on the planet lv426.Where it start sending a distress signal.
    The engineers return to Origae to find David, but discover that he has escaped.
    In the last part we see David arriving and meeting an unknown alien species
    on a tropical like planet.And that makes the cliffhanger that ends the third movie.
