My thoughts on how to apply force effectively through the drive phase of the rowing stroke. There are a few ways to go about effectively moving a boat, or rowing machine. Watching your force curve provides a window into how to feel your way through the art of applying force effectively and thus helping you develop rhythm and efficiency. The trick is to treat the whole stroke as an organic whole and coordinate your movement to support the overall goal, rather than focus on the parts. Your homework is to experiment with your real-time feedback on the monitor and discover an effective way to build momentum during the stroke.

Neis, this is a masterpiece of the force curve. I have seen a lot of different explanations on this matter, but is the very first time that I see the whole thing crystal clear. You have hit exactly at the head of the nail!

Great job on this video- thanks for all of the good info! I myself leave the force curve display up and running on my rower during all of my workouts- and as you suggested, if I see any hitches (anomalies) in my curve during my rowing I then correct it on the fly as I row. Example: For me, I can tend to relax my core a bit at times (during hard pushes) which can show up as an anomaly at the top of my force curve. When I see this, I usually stiffen my core muscles more on subsequent strokes which cleans up the anomaly with the force curve right away. Pretty cool thing this force curve… it’s an indispensable tool for me.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to see you enjoy the use of the force curve and it helps you pinpoint areas of your mechanics to improve. Really appreciate you leaving a comment!

Great video, thanks. Your explanation of how to feather in the pressure rather than going for an explosive surge was really helpful

Glad you found the video helpful. We don't want to be soft on the legs at all, it's just that there is a little more patience at the beginning of the stroke than just bashing away at the water/wheel.

Good counterpoint to a lot of advice provided by other online coaches who seem intent on a strict legs-back-arms sequence. Very helpful for a relative beginner.
