allman had nothing to do with this. eric had the first part written and the drummer gordon was using his studio after everyone left to record his own album without telling eric. eric came in one night and caught him, he was playing what ended up becoming the second half of layla. Eric told him he had his permission to use his studio, but only if gordon gave him that song. He agreed and the rest is history

It's lyrics are all Clapton because he fell in love with Patti Boyd who was already married to George Harrison from the Beatles, so the phrasing of the lyrics are all about him not being able to get her but she knows how he feels about her.
And to really make sure that she and George Harrison get the message, he invites them both to the studio and sings the lyrics to Layla which gets him Patti Boyd a few months later.

Hendrix went to see Clapton because of the wah wah peddle Clapton was playing. He was blown away with it after hearing Cream and Clapton headed to England. They ended up friends and Clapton actually bought him a left handed guitar but found out he had just died before he could give it to him. Clapton is god!

Layla was written for Eric's wife, Patti Boyd. She had just divorced George Harrison, his best friend. Eric wrote Layla, Bell Bottom Blues, Wonderful tonight about Patti. George wrote Something, I need you, For you blue, If I needed someone about her as well. This makes Patti Boyd the most written about woman in history.

SRV was better than any of them, but if you don't think Clapton at his best was stunningly great try listening to his leads on Derek and the Dominoes In Concert. Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad has two of the most amazingly technical, fluid, and expressive solos ever recorded, and Let It Rain has several minutes where Clapton just boggles the mind.

Eric Clapton fell in love with George Harrison’s wife. She left George and married Eric-and they were such good friends George forgave him! If you’re going to get into Cream-they were called Cream because they were the cream of the crop. People spray painted Clapton is God around England. But it was Jack Bruce on bass that was the lead in that band and Ginger Baker holding everything down (musically). They pioneered psychedelic rock, early heavy metal, electric blues rock. I recommend the songs Spoonful, Tales Of Brave Ulysses, Deserted Cities of the Heart, Born Under A Bad Sign, Strange Brew, Outside Woman Blues, any of those songs, I love them. Also, Sunshine of Your Love is obviously a classic.

The story you're referring to where Hendrix got on stage with Cream is true. Hendrix had just moved to England to start his solo career there, and his manager took him to a Cream show and asked if he could get on stage to jam. Clapton said yes, and Jimi got on stage and performed Howlin Wolf's Killing Floor with Cream minus Clapton. He cemented his reputation as the next Guitar God, and Clapton was blown away as well as everyone else there. Jimi is the real deal...🔥

A terribly tragic story. Gordon was probably the greatest drummer in rock history (along with Neil Peart) but was an undiagnosed schizophrenic. He self-medicated with massive amounts of drugs, but they ultimately couldn't keep the voices at bay. His mother kept trying to help him by trying to get him to commit himself while he fought it, but he eventually came to believe his mother was mind-controlling him and ordering him to hurt people. To stop her, he bashed her head when she opened the apartment door to him. One small point wrong - he used a hammer.

Full disclosure, I have been a devout Rush fan since March of 1976. They have been my favourite band from that day to this, and save for Jimi Hendrix nobody really comes close to Rush for me. That said, I believe that Alex Lifeson would not be the guitarist that he became without the influence of Eric Clapton. Whilst Eric Clapton wasn't Lifeson's only early influence, "Slowhand" was certainly among a handful of major influences on the young Alex "Lerxst" Lifeson. By the time that Rush was originally formed in the late 1960's Eric Clapton had already made a name for himself as the original guitarist in The Yardbirds (to be replaced by Jeff Beck who would, in turn, be replaced by Jimmy Page); had recorded with John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers and was active in Cream, releasing their "Disreali Gears" album in 1968, the year that Rush formed to play high school dances and the "Coff-In" teen "drop-in center" in the basement of a local Toronto church.
To the question of which is the "better" player it is hard to compare a straight ahead Blues player like Clapton with a Prog-Rock God like Alex Lifeson. But then you asked the ultimate questions, didn't you? Could Alex replace Eric in Cream? And could Eric Replace Alex in Rush? I think we have a clue to the answer to that in the album "Feedback" by Rush. Recorded to celebrate their 30th anniversary Rush recorded an EP of eight covers of songs from their earliest, most important influences from their youth. On "Feedback" Rush recorded covers of "Crossroads", which is a Robert Johnson original from the 1920's and also covered by both Cream and The Who. Also on the "Feedback" record are a couple of Yardbird covers from their Jeff Beck days ("Heart Full Of Soul", "Shapes Of Things") which demonstrates that Alex could have indeed replaced not only Eric Clapton in Cream, Alex could have replaced either Clapton or Jeff Beck in The Yardbirds. I don't think that either Beck or Clapton could have replaced Alex in Rush. A case of the student becoming the master. I have long believed that Alex is the most underrated and under appreciated guitarist in rock.

    • @JeromeDukes
      @JeromeDukes Před 2 lety

Yeah, I with you in regards to Clapton replacing Alex in Rush. However, Beck is one of my favorite guitar players of all time and I'm pretty sure can play Alex's parts. For me what makes a guitar players great, is how creative he/she is. I think Richie Blackmore stated, the sounds Beck can get out of a guitar is just on another level. Beck uses the guitar to mimic melodies he finds appealing, like a female vocalist or foreign cultural music as an example. Also like Alex, Beck is a gear and effects junkie. Skill level on the guitar is one thing, but you have to put in the time with effects and the gear to take your playing to another level. My top 5 guitar players are Beck, Knopfler, Lifeson, Gary Moore and Gilmour. In my opinion out of the 5 listed, Beck has experimented and broken the most barrier with the guitar. The guys is mad genius level.

I did this Song (Unplugged Version Which is the Best IMO). at the end I got a standing ovation. probably one of the coolest moments in my life. Especially since I was the the fat, unpopular kid at the time. I now have two daughters, My first born, Layla was dedicated to this song. My Youngest Daughter, her name is Lily, after a Shinedown song, Amaryllis.

But I do recall a couple songs that quickly comes to mind you guys haven't reacted to yet. Puscifer's Augostina & A Perfect Circle's Rose & Brena. This was a great reaction guys! There are some amazing songs by Eric Clapton. My all time favorite is Tears in Heaven He wrote and dedicated the song to his son Conor that passed away in 1991.

One of the greatest songs in rock history, from THE greatest album in rock history. A towering achievement by the most concentrated talent ever to play together. Derek and the Dominoes contained 2 of the greatest guitarist ever, one of the top 2-3 drummers of all time, and a world class bassist AND keyboardist. All at the height of their powers and in perfect sync. The individual musicianship AND tightness as a group are just amazing on song after song. Contains almost a dozen absolute classics - Bell Bottom Blues, Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad, Keep on Growing, Key to the Highway, Any Day, Nobody Knows You, Little Wing, Layla, and Thorn Tree in the Garden...

When he saw Hendrix, Sgt, Pepper had just been release by the Beatles on Friday, and on Sunday night, he played the whole album live on stage. In front of Clapton and Paul McCartney. Then he joined Derek and the Dominos, Bonnie and Delaney, and then he went solo. Clapton is more influential than Lifeson.

You didn't know Eric Clapton. Well, now you do. Except, there is a LOT to know. Yardbirds, Cream, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Derek and the Domino's, Blind Faith, and about 50 years of solo work.
And if you really get into it, each of these bands had top musicians in them, each with an interesting career of his/her own.

Clapton has played alongside and with a Who's Who of rock and blues history. Literally several dozen of the biggest names in history, including The Yardbirds, the Beatles, George Harrison, John Mayall, Steve Winwood, Bob Dylan, The Band, Duane Allman, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, JJ Cale, BB King, Albert Lee, Steve Collins, Chuck Leavell, Pete Townshend, Albert King, SRV, Rita Coolidge, Joe Cocker... the list is endless. It's incredibly tough to compare Clapton to Lifeson. Clapton is was and always will be blues based. He has longetivity and has played with some of his heroes, and he in turn has influenced generations of guitar greats. Lifeson is a great player, no doubt, more along the progressive rock side. But he's under rated compared to Geddy and Neil. I personally posted a survey/ poll on my FB page and more people were familiar with Clapton. I go with majority vote. Clapton for me.
