This filter works great only when I stuff a lot of polyester quilt batting between the bio balls and top foam. I don't think the bio balls do anything but take up space

Can I use a different media in the drum such as K1?

This filter is a cheap pool filter, carelessly rigged into being some sort of poor excuse for a pond filter. The ports for UV where originally used for saltwater probes in a pool. The UV lights installed are way underrated for pond use for the size of filter and the compact flourscents are outdated and ineffectiant to say the least. Top that off with the ugly adapters for 1 1/2" hoses and the poorly executed particulate tray designed for pool media with carelessly punched out slots. Save your money or convert one yourself. They even come with a pump and base for the same price as a pool filter right from the big rock candy mountain!
