  • Knowing how to find Top Dead Center (TDC) on your piston's compression stroke is necessary to correctly perform valve adjustments and other engine maintenance jobs on your ATV. Top Dead Center refers to when the piston is at the highest point and on the compression stroke of it's 4 stroke cycle, meaning both the intake and exhaust valves are closed. In this video, Charles shows how to easily find top dead center on single and dual cam, single-cylinder sport ATV's.

Make a video about ktm big bike top end rebuilds like the 250 SX or 125 SX. (There isn’t much exposure in any of the owners manuals)

Thank you for explaining the difference between the Exhaust TDC and Compression TDC. Just want to verify, is it ok to move the engine clockwise to go backwards (when adjusting on the left side of engine) if you overshoot the line up marks on the cam? Or does that damage the engine?

It's always recommended to go in the direction of normal rotation. Most of the time, if you barely pass it, I would rotate it back, but if it's way past then go the two revolutions. Just be aware that there are some ATV's (the 400 EX if I remember right) that if you rotate them backwards, it will mess up the measurement because of the decompressor design. -Charles

@@rmatvmc Thanks for the reply, Charles. I actually have a 2018 Suzuki RMX 450. When I was rotating the flywheel I accidentally went clockwise before I realized what a bonehead I was.

Got any help for a 2019 570 Polaris motor?

570 ATV? We actually have a RZR 900 and 1000 valve adjust video that might help. I know that 570 motor uses the same "tappets". -Charles
