- In this video we are planting out our Cosmos bipinnatus 'Cupcakes Blush' into a pot for summer colour. Cosmos are very floriferous and will continue to flower well into autumn, making them one of the best annuals you can grow.

That crow’s timing was perfect…lol
Maybe the crow thinks that wasn’t a good idea.
Great thanks for the tips on pinching out the tips!!
You're welcome 👍
At 53 I just found the joy in house plants and growing flowers! It takes patience and grace and I think sometimes that comes with age.
I so enjoyed this video! You made me smile and I have done that in awhile.
Thank you, God bless.
That's so lovely to hear, thank you 😊. There's just something about plants and growing that takes you to another realm and we love it for that as well as the beauty. I don't know where I would be with the garden and nurturing plants. It's therapy for the soul. Thanks again 🙏
I didn't know you could root the cut tips! Will definitely be doing this with my Cosmos this year👍
It's a great and easy way to get more plants 🪴 Thanks for watching 😀
Great video thank you brother
You're welcome 👍
❤
Thank you so much! That was a great help!! All the best from western 🇨🇦
You're very welcome, we love Cosmos and have grown more varieties this year. Thanks for watching 👍
Excellent tips I had no idea about, thank you so much. 🙏
Thanks, glad you found the video informative, thanks for watching 😀
Zip lock plastic bags are great for putting plant pots in for cuttings.
You're right, we prefer to use the zip bags too but don't always have them as we use loads for work lunches etc. We try and re-cycle the clean ones for the cuttings though 👍
These were great tips! Thanks for sharing😊
You're welcome, I'm happy to share our tips 😀
I just learned so much. Thank you
You're welcome, glad to have helped 👍
Ooh thank you for all the valuable information.🙂
You're very welcome Alison, thanks for watching 🙏
Great tips. Will use when planting out my cosmos.
Many thanks, glad to have helped. Thanks for watching.
Excellent 👍🏾👍🏾
Many thanks 😊
Thank you, this is the first video of yours that I have come across. I am growing Cosmos for the first time this year and and my seedlings have popped up after 2 days so I am ecstatic! I could see some white hairs at the base of some of the stems which I am thinking is the exposed root so I have covered the hairs up and now is the waiting game to see if they will be ok but they look healthy other than that. I am now a subsciber :)
That's great news, Cosmos are such wonderful plants that flower for months on end, we wouldn't be without them. Thanks for watching and subscribing 👍😁
Thank you, Paul! I followed along with you today as I planted up my cosmos seedlings. I have to confess I was nervous about nipping out the tops! But, I know your advice is excellent. Should I nip out the tops on a steady basis? Now, a good feed and watch them grow and flower! Wishing you the best week!
That's great the video was perfect timing for you so you could follow along. Once the growing tip is initially nipped out, there's no need to do it again. Just deadhead the spent flowers as you would normally. Have a great week too.
My Cosmos were leggy too this year. I've still got loads to plant (even though I've given a lot away) as I always sow too many. The birds seem to like the young shoots (they destroyed lots last year) and I've found some of my plants have been completely ripped out of their pots this year. I really like the dwarf Sonata variety but also grow the tall Sensation and Purity . Cracking little plants that always do well. Paul, I know what you mean about being in the garden early in the morning with just the birds. It's so peaceful when none of the neighbours are up. Hope you and Andrew are both okay. xxx
That's the same for us but with tomatoes this year, we'll have enough to feed the whole avenue! We really need to be more restrained next year. That's a shame you've lost some of your cosmos. You never know what the creatures and animals will take a fancy to. It was such a pleasure getting out early in the morning as we find filming difficult with so much background noise later in the day. We love this time of year. We're both well and Andrew is currently enjoying a week off from work due to half term. He's recently began working as a primary school teaching assistant and loves it. I think he's finally found his calling. Take care Wendy xxx
@@MadAboutGardening Yes, too many tomatoes for me as well. So tempting when sowing to just add more in case the first ones don't germinate! Glad that Andrew's loving his new job and the wonderful thing is all those school holidays. Just think, six weeks off in the summer. Mind you, everyone deserves it as children can be very tiring and hard work. I admire anyone who can hack doing a job like that. Take care. xxx
@@wendybartlett6717 The holidays certainly make working in schools attractive! Especially being off during the summer months when the weather is good. As you say, it's well deserved though. xxxx
Greeting's from Ireland, Great video, Cosmos and osteospermum are the only annual's I grow from seed. The osteospermum's are planted into pots on the windowsills and the cosmos goes into the garden bed's
Thanks Nicholas, much appreciated. We've never grown osteospermums from seed before but have grown plants bought from the garden centre. Any tips for growing from seed? They bloom for months so may try them next year. We wouldn't be without Cosmos. 😀👍
@@MadAboutGardening I have a heated propagator so it does not take to long to get them started.
Cheers for that 👍
I use honey instead of rooting powder
We've never tried that but if it works for you then great 👍
I think I may have cut too soon after pinching I only have two sets of leaves. Too soon?
Two of three sets is fine, I've been impatient before now and cut at two sets and the plants still bushed out fine 👍
Will they need staking and corralling ? If so how is that done?
Some of the taller varieties may need staking. The ones we grew last year did need to be supported. We did this just using garden canes and twine.
Hi Paul. The cuttings you took....will they be ready to plant out later in the summer or will you have to wait until next year?
They will be ready this year. As soon as they have rooted, they can be potted on and when they get larger, can be planted out. 👍
@@MadAboutGardening Thanks Paul.
New gardener here. Awesome video. Thank you!
You're very welcome, thanks for watching 👍
Can you let me know what powder you used? Thank you.
It's a brand called vitax organic rooting powder. Thanks for watching.
Hi do you pinch out dwarf cosmos thank you in advance 😊
Yes, we pinch out all cosmos, tall and dwarf. Thanks for watching 👍
Where can I get some seeds for this beautiful colour? I am in Canada but have friends coming from England this summer
It's called Cosmos 'Cupcakes Blush' and is widely available in the UK from most seed producers such as Thomson and Morgan. The colours are a mix of different shades of pink to almost white. Hope your friends bring you some when they visit. Thanks for watching 👍

Is it safe to plant cosmos seeds after there is no frost, but the night temps are still reaching 45 degrees F?
So long as the risk of frost has passed they will be okay but harden them off first for a least a week before planting out. Hope this helps.
@@MadAboutGardening what is harden them out mean?
It's a term used for getting the plants acclimatised to outdoors when they have been growing indoors. You just need to put them outside during the day and bring them back in at night. It helps prepare the plants for the change in temperature and prevents them getting shocked.
