      Sabaton are what fifteen year olds who like eighties rock listening to after getting into finding out about Iron Maiden and wishing Maiden were a tamer, more emotional, and less metal as they love to sing along to Journey and Aerosmith on the local classic rock station. Perfect fit except for the fact that Sabaton sounds like German beer hall music more than heavy metal. That’s where the massive alcoholism present in the former Eastern Block comes into play. Drunk young Slavs listening to beer hall music while pretending to recreate the Battle of Kursk in their bedrooms.
      TL;DR
      Basically a crappy, generic beer chugging military LARP band.

    The Italian Front in WW1 was such an overlooked theater of the war.
    Millions of casualties among the Italians and Austro-Hungarians in freezing cold temperatures at insanely high altitudes.

      Every song is about war but not in a glorifying way. If anything, the only thing they glorify are the brave souls who sacrificed their lives in wars. They educate and sing about the events in war 'lest we forget' not to celebrate the wars, but to keep alive the memory of the events of those wars. Not who won and who lost.

    I think Sabaton’s educational music should be a must have in school history lessons. There music captivates me & draws me in & kids nowadays need to have somethings that engages them. I’m from UK & my son said to me when he went from primary to high school was that his lessons were no longer interesting & found it hard to focus & engage. Well he’s not big on history but he loves Sabaton !!!

    Interestingly this song is about multiple events on the Alpine front. While White Friday is the more notable feature of the song which happened at Mount Marmolada, the "Blood Mountain" actually refers to Col di Lana, where the Italians engaged in mine warfare after losing the peak to Austria-Hungarian forces. Peak of Col di Lana was almost completely destroy by the mine detonations and that's what the giant explosions in the background of the music video appear to represent.

    I lived in Italy for several years as a teenager. My dad was active duty Air Force, and we were stationed at Aviano. As a Boysscout, I went on a lot of hikes in the dolomites. I couldn't imagine climbing those mountains with a weapon and ammo. I barely made some of those hikes with my shitty gear. The men who passed there, and are still buried under those mountains are heroes, regardless of what country they fought for. Just my two cents.

    Small correction, sorry Alex. In avalanche accident on the mount Marmolada, that occurred during White Friday (it actually was Wednesday, but the term White Friday stuck to the event later on), September 13, 1916, 321 Austro-Hungarian soldiers were hit by snow in their barraks. 270 of them died, buried under 200 000 tons of snow and ice (only 40 bodies were ever recovered from the pileup). The other avalanches struck both Italian and Austro-Hungarian positions (that was proposed that both armies specally fired shells on the weakend snow in order to burry the enemy soldiers, but it was never been confirmed officially, as far as I heard) and the total number òf casualties during White Friday was estimatèd from 2 000 to 10 000 soldiers and sivilian people. Many of them are still there and has never been recovered. That's why the most powerful lines (in my opinion) "I cry for spring to come but here winter remains" and "all of this years I have been frozen in time" are in this song. Sabaton want to show us that they are all still here, silently watching on us from this mountains and praying for that one day, when their bodies will be recovered and their stories will be known to the public. But this day is still yet to come, sadly....

  • @ErikSanders
    @ErikSanders Před 2 lety

    On December 13th, 1916 at 5 AM, known as White Friday, a series of avalanches hit both Austro Hungarian and Italian barracks and basically buried them with everyone inside. People reported afterwards that both Austro Hungarian and Italian troops fired artillery at the loose snow on the mountains to cause avalanches on each other's side. The total death toll is unknown, but approximately 2000 soldiers died and a dozen civilians. Many of the bodies were never found. Some are being found nowadays with the ice on the mountains melting more and more due to climate change.
