  • How to prevent scratches on vinyl flooring while moving the Range out, to wire up the wall outlet. I wanted to check 🤔 the Range 🔌cord set that was wired up by the appliance company. Only to find out , it was all wrong! Ground and neutral have to be separated on a 4 wire circuit. Watch this video to see how it's all done.

    I hope you do not mind my comment. A very well done and accurate video! For your viewers, many do not know what to do when they move into a house. 3 or 4 prong cord or receptacle? Do not trust that if there is a 3 prong plug that it is correct. You must check to see if there are 3 conductors and a ground or just 3 conductors. If your house was build after mid to late 80’s, it most likely will have ground. It was required in 1984 NEC. Do not change the receptacle to match the cord if it is 3 prong and house is 4 prong. Change the cord and how it attaches as shown in this video to 4 prong. 3 prong is an exception allowed for older houses only. Respectfully, Kevin

After the contractor doing the gas line emptied my wallet I thought I could move the old 40 amp circuit over 16 inches and convert the breaker to 30 amp. The main issue I had was the #6 in the box. Makes the job quicker to use a cable clamp. Then you don't have to work under the stove. Clamp it to the cable, slip it in and install the star nut inside the junction box (on the stove), then screw down your conductors as you did making sure to remove the ground strap on the neutral as you did.

    • @workingmanrondoyle3287
      @workingmanrondoyle3287  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Your right. If the wire's insulation jacket is pinched under a screw terminal can be very bad. This causes resistance and resistance causes heat and heat causes the jacket to melt past it's flash point thus causing fires.

Just make sure the neutral and ground are bonded together at the range with a bonding strap which is supplied with all new Ranges. If you're appliance guy through this bonding strap away 🤔 One can be made from a bare no.10 copper piece of wire. I hope that helps you.

      Thanks for watching and commenting Rebecca. That does sound confusing 🤔. I know and have seen manufacturer's do this before. If your range is under 100' away from the main panel's location 30amp is adequate on a 10 gauge wire size. But whenever I see the manufacturer specify a higher amperage such as your instructed, I always wire to the side of caution. So I would install an 8 gauge for a 40 amp breaker. That way your covered. I hope that helps you.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. It sounds like you have two conductors with a ground. If your in an older home Pre-1980's and this is the feed to the range? You can wire a new range to this by using a matching cord set. The ground and neural are bonded together in this application.
      But on the other hand, if you moved into a newer home 1990's and you brought your older range with you? You'll need to update the cord set to a four prong where the ground and neural are separated. The Electric codes have changed in year past making this a requirement. I hope that answers your questions and I haven't confused you.

      Your absolutely right. Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, it is a list and labeled U.L. appliance. Mostly all the appliances and fixtures I install are listed and labeled. So far I ran into two that were not and I refuse to install them. Both of these items were something the customer bought online 😥 and most of the websites don't even mention it. I wonder if there was any mention of the bonded neutral configuration in the installation manual. If so, that’s forgivable, except for the default configuration being a bonded neutral, vs being in the ungrounded state by default.

    • @sub3marathonman788
      @sub3marathonman788 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@workingmanrondoyle3287 Can you explain for a regular person on a 4-wire installation why "neutral bonded to ground on the appliance is a major code violation." But yet it is OK to do the neutral bonded to ground on the 3-wire installation by using the ground strap.
      I just had a Samsung stove professionally installed. It is a 4-wire installation. The instructions state to "Cut and discard the ground strap. Do not discard any screws." So do you just remove the grounding strap, exactly as you did in the video, or cut it so that the upper portion is still connected to the upper and lower white wires? The professional who installed it did not remove the grounding strap, but connected the green wire to the bottom of the strap, as opposed to what was initially seen on your stove with both the (lower) white and green connected to the same screw.
      Also, is there supposed to be a strain relief or not? The Samsung installation states, "For Conduit Installation Only." The professional installation for my stove did not put a strain relief, but there is no conduit, just the cord, which goes through the large hole.

    • @workingmanrondoyle3287
      @workingmanrondoyle3287  Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@sub3marathonman788 Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏻. As to your question 🤔 about this issue of bonding-vs-not bonding the neural to ground. The Nec. revised the code quite a few years ago about this, deeming it was much safer to add a neutral to kitchen ranges then share the ground on the appliance. This was becoming more of a public safety concern due to the electronics that were added to the modern day Range. Older style ranges from the 1960's to the 1980's only had 2-hots and a ground. So that's why most older homes had only 3 wire feeders. The only thing that needed a neutral was the oven light which shared the ground as a neural. This would cause the potential for a person touching the appliance to get shocked. Most of the oven timers were non-electric (mechanical) until the late 1980's Thur today's models.
      Sad but true 🤔Appliance technicians aren't electricians and most are paid on an hourly bases by there employer. Not enough adequate training on this topic. So going off of what you said, your range was not wired right. The ground strap can be cut or removed. Same difference, your separating the neutral from the ground. Mostly all range and dryer cords come with cord strain relief clamps. And yes they should be used to prevent wires being chafed on the ranges sheet metal ! Most appliance delivery people won't install them due to the time it takes to do it the right way. I hope that answers your questions.

    You know there are no google results and no youtube results for how to fix an electric range top that is sagging in the center. Very common problem. Everything else works just the center has sagged from years of weight being placed on the burners. Some type of non flammable center support or independent isolated support for each burner. You may criticize the sound quality, but there’s no way that alone can make this man sound incompetent. There are so many videos on YT with bad camera work and done in single takes, made by DIYers who are relying on common sense and then offering their advice and experience to the unaware who are flocking to YT hoping to find a video to help them do whatever task. This man’s competence and professionalism are immediately obvious, and the quality of his filming and camerawork is well above-average. I’ll gladly trade the poor sound quality for the several observations he made that will make my own installation easier and correct.
