Does Online Therapy Really Work?

- Let’s talk about online therapy, and what we can do to maximize that. Creating a safe space to have therapy is key. If we worry that someone is listening in on us we won’t be able to open up and benefit from therapy as much. I have had many patients and viewers tell me that they are doing therapy in their car or at the park a block away, or that they set up a comfy place in their closet with blankets hanging around them to deaden the sound. Whatever you can do to create that safe place.. Go for it.

I just cancelled my subscription to an online therapy site because of this site. I am so grateful for this video because it made me realize what I was getting was not help. Especially after my therapist just dropped me because we had an argument. He didn't talk it out why I was feeling the way I was he just dropped me. I just wish I knew this before paying the money I did. Words from someone who is working on herself. Not all online therapy's work and if something feels off, don't ignore that gut feeling.
Thanks for helping us to be SEEN, HEARD, and CARED FOR Kati!!!
S M completely agree it's so important to be seen heard also cared for just wish I didn't feel so alone anyway hope your ok and things are ok for you 🙂

Something I learned in therapy that helps me (when I remember it!) with negative thoughts is that we have a natural bias towards negative thoughts as a leftover from our evolution-ancestors. Seeing things with a negative bias helped them survive. That rustling in the bushes might be a lion after us, so better run away! Those who did, survived to pass on those traits, even if they were wrong about a lion in the bushes. I'm not explaining that very well but hopefully the idea comes through. When I catch myself knee-deep in negative thoughts, I ask myself 'where's the lion?' That helps me look at my negative thoughts with some distance and sort out where they come from and whether or not they have merit. (It usually turns out there is no real merit. )

A support system is so important. I'm so grateful for my friend A. who caught on right away that I was going down hill and invited me to stay at her place for a day or two. Very peaceful house and environment...she nailed it!
Perfect video. My narcasist husband came out of no where during an appointment of mine and I felt like I was going to die. I of course have learned to schedule my appointments earlier in the morning. I had never felt so humiliated as I did that day by his eye roll. I love your videos so much and they are always very helpful to me 💜💜💜💜💜💜
Having a garden has helped my mental health tremendously. I have been going through a lot in addition to what's going on in the world. In my garden (veggies and herbs) I feel closer to mature and TBH I feel a sense of control. I started 99% of the plants from seed and planted them where they are myself. Plus there's the aspect of nurturing something and gardening is good exercise. Whenever I feel overwhelmed throughout tje day zi just pop outside for a few minutes and pull some weeds or pirne some suckers or tie up some plants. Very helpful.
I am so impressed that my therapist is having our session at night, after my child goes to bed. I wouldn't be able to have our session otherwise. I'm so very grateful. I'm glad I asked for what I needed even though I worried it was unreasonable
I prefer face to face at the office too over virtual online therapy I find myself like really performing like I would for a job interview or even like it just doesn't feel real so I act as if all things are good automatically-without even really trying too
I find that keeping a sketchbook is a great tool for relaxing, focusing inward, and feeling better. Some days all I do is scribble. Other days I glue stuff in. I also draw and paint when I am feeling more focused.
I think two things that helped me a lot against negative thinking is meditation (the concept itself) and deliberate self-dialogue. Learning about meditation helped me understand that I shouldn’t beat myself up for having random thoughts or a wondering mind and that all I need to do is bring back my attention when I notice, and, though I have yet to consistently meditate, doing this over time seemed to have led to making that process easier. And I find that deliberate internal dialogue about where I want my attention to be has been one of the best ways for me to get focused.
This is probably my favorite video of yours and ive been a subscriber for a few years now. Your best video IMO. I love your others too. Thank you for all these clear and concise suggestions and information.
I actually love to see my therapist online, not only for both of our safety, but I LOVE sharing what my home is like, it gives my therapist more of an idea of who I am when I'm not in the office, and we share our pets as well. I also write down LOTS of sticky notes and I love to share them with them, because I forget to bring in my sticky notes with the good ideas/thoughts on them that I get from watching CZcams videos 😀😁✨
This was really helpful thank you. I just sat and absorbed everything and now I’m going to study the links and delve deeper tomorrow! Thanks it’s an uplifting boost of hope and energy x
As always thanks for the knowledge Kati, always excited to watch your videos. Stay safe out there to you and yours
Thank you Katie, you're such a delight, I'm grateful for your sound wisdom.
I used to despise journaling but I started about 2 years ago and loved it. Some tips for good journaling that's worked for me:
1. Try to journal somewhere quiet, calm and comfortable. Maybe this is in your room after everyone's gone to bed like me
2. Listen to music. Music doesn't distract me as long as it's music I've listened to before. The music in the background helps me to think and gather my thoughts. I don't feel as rushed or stressed to write, music helps me write what's on my mind, go with the flow.
3. Go with the flow. Your journal is your safe space. You can put down your own thoughts, feelings, and opinions while being free of judgement. This helps tremendously.
4. Try doing this for a week. Then 2 weeks, then a month. I PROMISE it gets easier. You'll find your own style and it'll fit you. Keep a good schedule on journaling. For me I try to journal at least every other day. Setup own goals
YOU GOT THIS!!!!
You're really talking to me. You also sound very personable and relatable in how you explain things
Dear Kati thank you so much for your great work and help. You are helping many of us around the globe with your kindness and amazing approach you have. :) Especially your videos during this tough times are very honest and helpful and they make me feel much better ! All the best to you ❣️
Patients need empathy from their therapist. A genuine connection. A therapist with a facade, or shielded in a professional bubble, es no bueno.
Thanks so much Kati for always cheering me up 🥰🥰
I'm an online therapist and I loved this video! It's given me some ideas to help my clients keep their appointments with me every week and to make sure they're taking care of themselves in between our sessions.
Thanks for the tips, Kati! I talk to my therapist on the phone once a week and I always do a few things that help me feel safe and focused: I dress the same way I would if I had to meet her in person, I keep a bottle of water with me, I close the door and windows of the room I'm on, and I use a notepad and a pen to doodle and write anything that I want to remember about the session.
Hey Kati hope you’re having an amazing day!!
Hi Melissa :) Thanks!! So far so good! I hope you're having a great day too! xoxo

Hi Kati. I have a question regarding anxiety. I would like to connect with you as I have a private scenario that I would like to ask you about since you are a therapist! Thanks!
Hi Katy, thank you for another wonderful video. I know it’s been hard to be productive these days but you still manage to do so. I’m so proud and thankful for you. I had one online check up session with my Pyschiatrist andI find it hard to communicate with her that much because I worry about my surroundings, if I am being listened to by anyone, if my neighbours are hearing all the things I say and they know about my situation. Also, I am becoming impulsive these days. Such a worse time to live.
I definitely feel more impulsive as well
This was perfect timing. My therapist said she won't be doing in person sessions for a very long time.
There is much research that online therapy is just as effective as the more traditional in-person therapy. The tools and techniques that would be used by a therapist in person will be able to be used online. There are few exceptions to this, and there are some therapies that must occur in-person. However, a majority can be successfully done online. If you are short on time, don't feel comfortable going into an office, or just testing the waters of therapy, online is a great option!
Thanks for making this less of weird thing to think about and try!!! ❤️🙌
Hello from Brazil! Your videos help me so much, thank you Kati ❤
Mine are back in person again but she still does telehealth for people that prefer that. When I was using telehealth I asked to have video calls rather than phone because I was becoming distracted too easily with just the audio. One thing that I found useful was to make sure I was talking with headphones on so that no one else could hear her talking - I knew the sound couldn't carry. Also I made sure all of my other devices TV etc were turned off because otherwise they were a big source of distraction. I did find that even though she could only see a really small part of my room I would make sure I had had a shower etc and made my bed (my sessions I was in my bedroom). These things meant that my mind didn't wonder while I was talking so I could focus on the conversation to get the most out of talking to her.
Hi :) I see a lot of doctors making videos about health which I think is awesome, but I personally want to thank you, because, I stuggle with depression and anxiety, and I am currently seeing a therapist, but not everyone has that financial possibility, so I think its great you make these videos, and thank you very much, wishing everything good :)
Thank you so much Kati!
Kali, you look so beautiful! The bright colors are perfect for you! I do online therapy with my LCSW and it has worked wonderful. I miss not seeing her in person but this will happen soon, I hope! Kali, thank you for being so incredible!!!!!!M
I'm jealous of your positivity and pureness. I wish to be that way some day.
You are really insightful Kati!!
Thank you Katie for what you do it is so awesome it really helped me out movie times thank you 🙂
Your mind is like a garden: you can either grow weeds or grow flowers 💐
I don't mind a few dandelions growing there with the flowers. And they make good tea.
Awesome thank you... I am stealing this!
Every weed is still a flower...
I like your line of thinking. I was always told a weed is anything you don't want growing. ;)
Online therapy has been wonderful for me. I describe myself better through writing. My therapist allows for me to write to him online whenever I need to. He also offers phone and webcam sessions, but I’ve never needed it. I’ve gotten what I need through is writing back and fourth. My therapist online is the best therapist I’ve ever had. He’s one of my biggest cheerleaders.
I loved it ❤️ and I really needed it 👌
Thank you for the book recommendations.
I’m having a very hard time. In 1997 I was diagnosed with serious depression and anxiety. I worked part time in a school district, which I really loved. This was my 4th year. Rumors started going around about the schools closing before Easter break. We were told March 31st we would return. My last day was March 13th. Sometimes I feel so lonely. The way we are living right now is not normal for human beings. On top of that I live alone!!!!!
Living alone in this pandemic is hard... hugs
Hang in there and know that you are NOT alone even tho it may feel that way. We are here and we hear you. This is a very hard time for all of us, and worrisome. Word of wisdom: Don't just sit and listen to the news or politics, it will bring you down (way down). Do happy things, things that make you smile, at least once a day. If your thoughts go negative, get up and do something positive.
Exercise, clean house/ do laundry, rearrange furniture, play music or just play air guitar. haha. Make a card or a dozen and mail to a nursing home for others who are also feeling closed off and lonely and maybe scared.
Tell your family members and/or friends how much you value them and miss them. Pay someone a compliment everyday, they're free! Be kind to yourself and stay strong. Teachers are so needed, and undervalued. Thank you for your past work with the kiddos - I bet they can't wait to see you again.
i listen tou every day kati. works great for me. i have a nice feeling about ya.
This is good timing. I have been looking for therapists because I really need to see someone and most of them are full - the waiting list is at least a month for most places near me. I've been wondering how much more beneficial in person therapy is in comparison to online therapy. I imagine that would depend on the person and the nature of the therapy.
I switched therapists and it’s only online thank you for this!
Thank you so much Kati. Have a nice day 😘
Of course!! You have a wonderful day too! xoxo
I’m really excited for this video, I’ve been apprehensive about using online therapy!! I hope you have a great day Kati 💖

hi there Kati, thanks for your enriching teachings on this,... for me personally bc I know everyone’s different, online therapy isn’t for me, it’s important to know yourself so for me it isn’t anything very helpful, im waiting for in person and in meantime talk with a couple friends, btw I’m sensitive to people’s energy and you have very high vibration energy your a good genuine person w compassion, appreciate you

All the things you've mentioned do actually work and I'm happy to know I'm on the right track. Thank you again for all of your great content 😊 I'm currently reading "are u ok?" With my therapist

I think online therapy is vital. We use a video app for online group therapy for substance abuse. The clients love it and in these times I think it plays a very important role. In the app we use, we have "breakout rooms" so a client can have a separate video session with the case manager for 15 minutes or so and then return to the group. It is keeping us open. The app has audio and visual
Love your channel and enjoy every video you post.

Awe I am so glad :) xoxo
Hate to say this, but the scrolling names kinda reminds me of a infomercial. Don't get me wrong, love the video and the content, but think the scrolling text is kinda distracting. Not trying to be a hater, but giving my two cents. Maybe a side bar with a vertical scroll might look better?
Yeah I also found them kinda distracting. I know some other CZcamsrs will make their intros (or outro) a little longer and just have their patrons listed on the screen. But it kinda depends on how many there are
I agree, it interferes with reading the captions a bit too.
Omg, I have sat in my car for my appointments. I even hung blankets on the windows. Recently, I bought a small white noise machine from amazon that I put outside my bedroom door, like therapists have for their offices. I am trying this out now, so I can sit more comfortably in my room, but it’s still very weird. ☺️
Yes, thank you! Very helpful : )
FYI Katie - The Arielle Schwatz workbook on your amazon page, the link is so-so. There is a better listing that ships under amazon prime. The one you have has 1 left in stock and is from a 3rd party seller. Hope this helps! Thanks again for the great vid.
Hi Kati. I had my first in person session this morning since early March. We both wore masks and there was a clear shower curtain between us. I hope that this isn't the new normal. I am considering going back to telepsych. At least I can see my therapist that way. Have a good day.
Hello, Kati, thankyou.
Your Awesome Kati 👌
For me I like going to an office and seeing my therapist more than talking over the phone
I love the video ❤️❤️ after watching this video I want to get myself right….. getting a therapist… appropriate your work thank you.
One thing I'm hoping to buy is a sound machine to place near my door while I have my sessions online, I also find doing my sessions while dressed relaxing me more, then again, I was never allowed to wear only my underwear in the waiting room, the seats were always cold.
I love the idea of a sound machine!! And of course.. being fully clothed! haha!! xox
Thank you kati. I honestly needed this so much, im horrible at actually remembering that i have online appointments so i think this will help me try again. Also i took notes, and im going to try that 5 day challenge. I think it will help if i just devote a little time to getting my thoughts out.
Thank you very much, I've been really struggling.
❤️
How do you manage feeling dissociated with video therapy? I already feel like I'm watching life through a screen and my new therapist doesn't seem as real as she would in person. Like there were invisible physical layers between me and others that already kept me separate, and now the computer screen. I don't feel like I'm talking to a real person. Very strange feeling.
I feel like that too!
Sometimes it helps to have a pet or drawing or something else tactile on hand to ground you.
this is the first time ive ever seen anyone bring this up, its definitely a huge obstacle for many people i think. i have chronic dpdr and i cant do video therapy bc of this reason, i can just barely do it even in-person, with video i wouldnt be able to say a sentence that makes sense.

Hey Kati, will you ever do another video on the avoidant attachment style? I've heard of a lot of people breaking up in the lockdown, and I've been really struggling myself to be around my partner. I feel it's thrown a lot of us into really uncomfortable intense situations that we cant escape from and it could be helpful to a ton of people. Love the vids

i was going to therapy a lot last year but in the end it just didn't work out for me and now I'm at the square one again. i am... passively suicidal? is that even a thing lol, but yeah, I'm heavily depressed and i literally dont end my life just because i know how much pain its gonna cause to my loved ones.. and i do wanna get better, but these days everything just sucks. i dont even have a job currently that would keep me occupied and i cannot even imagine myself having a happy future, i am lucky enough to have a passive income that i worked hard for so now i dont have to stress about money for a while and i wanted to fix my mental health in this time of having a lot of free time, but everything just seems to get worse and with each day i feel like i care less about everything.
love you kati, thanks for your videos! they keep me a little bit hopeful at least
Thank you for the tips about self thoughts and journaling ( I want to do it more often since I like to draw along with writing.) I also want to do EMDR in person once I will be able to do it in person since I feel there are too many distractions at home and it feels like a barrier talking online in front of a screen and not having direct contact wth someone in person. In person therapy just feels better and once we have a COVID vaccine we'll be able to have Safer in person therapy and support group sessions. Stay Healthy and Safe 🤗
Do you know of online therapists that practice EMDR for Trauma related CPTSD, and possibly ones that deal with pornography addiction and the technology they use to heal that?
I just discovered Sanvello and got the nicest surprise to see you on the videos. I love the app so far and it's been a week since I downloaded. I have my first session on Tuesday.
Glad you like them and thank you for letting me know :)
Just looked up this Sanvello place online. You can see a distinct difference between websites from say goodhelp and this Sanvello place. how the site is layed out is a great indication to tell you what it really is they offer...
Sanvello looks more professionally layed out, when the goodhelp looks a bit more gimicky. Doesn't take much to tell if you pay attention a little.
How is your sessions going thus far though? I hope well. Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Yeah I told my therapist that I was struggling with the phone therapy sessions so she took me off her calendar and told her secretary that I needed a break.

Hey Kati! Thanks so much for this video, I'm not doing online therapy but I am doing therapy over the phone for the first time and this was super helpful. I did want to request if at some point you could do a video about what to do when you're frustrated with your therapist. I'm with a new therapist and unfortunately this last session didn't go awesome because I barely had any time to talk about what I needed to talk about and when I did say something she got confused on what I meant and talked to my ear off about stuff that wasn't related to the issue that I was really trying to talk about because I didn't word things well. I'd really love to know how to deal with these feelings of frustration towards my therapist. Thanks so much! I really love your videos and they are super helpful.

I’ve been doing EMDR virtually and it’s been fantastic..!
I’m interested in how that works because I wouldn’t have thought it would be that effective. How is it different then in person? Do u have to set up your own “safe space”?
Hi TK..I personally haven’t done it face to face, however, I’ve been doing it through a professional that I’ve done some prior face to face training with so going into it I’ve had confidence in their professional abilities. My EMDR professional has set protocols around setting up the environment (safe space and emergency procedures) computer requirements etc..These have to be met prior to the sessions. Those are some key things to look out for going into this. Personally I use a large computer screen with good audio in a nice warm & quiet room. That’s pretty much all I can say at this point and I would recommend talking to prospective EMDR specialists about testimonials if you’re unsure. It’s definitely been a life changing experience for me. Hope all is well and best wishes in your journey 🙂.
@@krisbailey7160 Wow that's magnificent... Who was your therapist that initiated this, as well as what group did they work for? I would lastly like to know did they say it was a requirement that you see them face to face on telehealth to do the EMDR training?
Thanks 😊
I started going to therapy online at the beginning of quarantine, now I've been able to go in person 3 times! It's actually kinda weird for me to transition to in-person lol

Hi! Wow, that is a good idea with getting out while in therapy. I zoom with mine. My appointment is in my room now. With COVID and just recently switching therapist, met my current one once in person. It was weird and had to be honest that therapy is hard on video vs in person.
I'm also in a DBT group also on Zoo now. Radical Acceptance is what we are working on this week. It's hard but I'll try
Online therapy is difficult but better than no therapy. I struggle with BPD and dont know what I would do without therapy. I have been more emotional sobbing on online therapy then I would have been in person. 😢😭 (im struggling as I watched this trying to calm myself down)
Online therapy wasn't for me so I talked to my therapist and we met in person in the centre. We were the only 2 there because of COVID19
I do my sessions in my parents bedroom because they have a walk-in closet if I need to go in there👌🏽.
Kati you seriously have been helping me out like A LOT in between my therapy sessions with my therapist😊. Thank you so much I really appreciate it🥰.
QUESTION: how is your mediation journey going😆?
My therapist and I are doing our sessions on Zoom right now. It’s better than I thought it would be, even doing it in my car.
Dont do them on zoom. Zoom is not safe at all. Go to Duo
Just what i needed, tomorrow i am going to my first online therapy

My therapist gets it as well but you kind of get it more. You are also funny. I’m in my only in my third year of school but I hope that I can be as good or slightly as good therapist as you.
My eating disorder started when I was 9 question how would a kid know about eating disorders I had anorexia nervosa. Now I’m in recovery and I finally see myself as I don’t have an eating disorder but I’m recovering from an eating disorder.
What do you think ?
Yes it does, me and my wife see a psychologist regularly online
Kati, can you make a video about medical restraint?
Thank you so much for the video Kati.
I have fully canceled my therapy because of the online service switch. Thus far i am not convinced it will have the same effect.
It's not always as effective as in person therapy, but right now in person may be too dangerous. Any online or phone therapy is always better than no therapy.
Mine switched as well. I am not as open emotionally but definitely have benefited from continuing.
