How to DESTROY The Karlings - Rewriting Frankish History - Crusader Kings 3 Gigachad Story

  • It's commonly misunderstood that the Carolingians were the first to unite the Franks. In reality, the family of Merovech, who fought alongside the Romans against Attila the Hun, was the founder of the first Frankish empire, and dynasty. The Merovingians were an extremely powerful force in western Europe, who eventually were supplanted by the Karlings. Although the Karlings would go on to do greater conquests, it's often ignored that they used the base which the Merovingians built for them to accomplish it.
    Let's explore a world where Merovech dethrones his Karling rivals, and brings in the appropriate renown for his people, which was so unjustly robbed from them.

    I’d like to see another part where a separate Christian religion is formed with folk syncretisation.
    And a custom empire encompassing all Frankish/Carolingian land.

    I'm currently playing on the Fallen Eagle mod as the Mogyer Confederation. They were nomadic so I actually managed to migrate into Central Asia and take over all of persia. I made a magyar-persian hybrid culture, a new gnostic faith and am currently awaiting for the rise of Islam.
    It's been one of my most fun campaigns ever, and I think a nomadic migration story (FE or not) would work well with your style of storytelling. Great work as always!

    actually in fallen eagle (a really good mod) you can play as...any member of the merovingian family, in the year 476. I tried to play as Siagrius, King of Soissons. He was defeated by Clovis in 480, so the margin was thin. I discovered, though....that killing the whole family usually dealt with the problem. So i killed them all.
    However....saying that the merovingians "united" anything would be an understatement. The Kingdom broke several times and was divided among the different sons. Then they would fight among themselves once and again. Eventually, Dagobert I gave too much power to the mayors of the palace.... Charlemagne's ancestors were the Mayors of the palace in the kingdom of Austrasia, and they gave to themselves the title of "Duke of the franks". Just under the king. After Austrasia conquered neustria, the carolingians controlled the whole thing.
    Then it was just a matter of having the pope to agree to a dynastic change.

      @Tarkusarkusar  Před rokem +7

      yeah, the reality of the Merovingians certainly WASN'T unified, lol, but it makes for a fun premise to set them up as being superior to the Carolingians in that way.

    This was a really good CK3 story! I was a bit skeptical because I thought you were more of a power gamer than a story teller but you managed to put a lot of interesting stuff in like reasoning for the culture tenet changes and the Mad Merovingian getting in over his head twice in a row with wars and going mad.

    Small history lesson: Peppin the Short was the son of Charles Martel (the hammer). Charles was the son of Peppin of Herstal... They where the mayor of the palace. A power who has getting bigger at the rule of Clothar II (because of the Salian laws there where a lot of wars between the offsprings from the first king who we known as Clovis I). Peppin the Short became king because the pope supported him. Peppin asked the pope: should the power lay in the people who has the power or the old family (king Childeric III was put on the throne by Peppin and his Brother)

    Are you sure the merovingians were of asatru faith? They weren't true christians (rather questionable christians with lots of pagan things) but most of the early barbarians were christians nevetherless. Turks were the same, no? Strange powerful muslims with quite a few pagan habits, were looked down by the true emirs. But could someone really argue if they were muslims?
