Just noticed, your tailstock must have a left hand thread. Surprised that fat cord fitted in enough - ah yes the spring - always fun! Redex - that takes me back a few decades! Great result Rob though on load volts sure peak up a lot!
Hi Chris, Yes that tailstock is left hand thread. It was made that way. It's actually quite good to use for drilling as you are pulling back on the handle rather than rolling your wrist. Maybe that's why they did it. You can still buy REDEX in Oz. It's handy stuff. Cheers Rob
Well done fellow scrounger. Free is the opening line to a challenge at my shop. Schaublin sounds great. What a great find and restore. MMO in every tank in my Volvo. Like my Dad's Doc said about vitamins "if you think they are helping take them - I don't have anything else better than you believing you feel better." MMO makes a nice solvent and makes me smell nicer....😁. I only use it in crankcase oil if I have a basket case - typically I run synthetics. Otherwise, it goes in my fuel with octane booster (too cheap to pay premium fuel +$.50 a gallon here in Michigan). Volvo turbo likes premium octane. Booster runs about $.20 a gallon.
I put some in the tank to clean/freshen up the diesel injectors in my little turbo tray top. It definitely works and smooths out the engine. I only do it when it needs it. Morey's upper cylinder lubricant and a few others probably do a similar thing, but stick with what you know works. Cheers Rob
You have been saying the rock rat is on borrowed time for a while, I think it is actually the workshop mascot more than anything else. Always there to remind you of the nature outside, and that you have to stop every so often and admire the world.
Nice Job Rob , Hair Dryers Are Handy . Work good on Heat Shrink Tubing Too. But A Lighter is Easier. My Brother Used one To Thaw Out A Frozen Gas line in the Driveway one Cold Morning ! Every Home Mechanic Should Have One .
Hi Wayne, They are great for softening things to make em fit and heat shrink ;) A proper heat gun would be more powerful, but this one (also roadside junk) works well. Cheers Rob
You should have seen the oil smoke it blew out for the first ten minutes after it started. I don't think the rings were doing anything. Pity I didn't have the camera going as it was pretty incredible. It was impressive how quickly the REDEX freed up the rings/stopped the engine smoking and restored compression. Cheers Rob
Brake fluid works just as well, but the cloud is a lot larger and smellier. Redex still available here, though I think the formula was updated to remove the TEL lead from it, replacing with other metals. It used to be basically TEL with just enough fuel added to get it to pour at room temperature. Still, don't eat harbour fish, they generally are solderable, seeing as the refinery decommissioned the TEL tank, and found a little hole in it that had been leaking the TEL for a few decades into the ground.
I think you are referring to the heavy REDEX oil additive. This is different and is a light version looking similar to ATF. It is what was used/injected in the tank by service stations before leaded fuel became available. Remember those days ? Cheers Rob
G'day Harold, I thought it was a dud when it first started and blew out more smoke than a WW2 destroyer. The rings were really gummed up and it only just started with gas down the plug hole. Compression was so low it wouldn't pull enough air through the carby - barely started. Runs good now. Cheers Rob
Ive just got hold of a Honda GX generator. I drained the oil & she was full full full, prob a tank of fuel in the sump. Lots of crap in bottom end & the tank. Motor doesnt move. It was never siezed just sat for a long time. It sa total pull down strip job I feel. I will get her going.
Before you pull it down try partially filling the cylinder with kerosene though the spark plug hole and let it stand for a few days. That should dissolve the rust holding the piston rings. That's the only place they will sieze from standing. Then rock the crankshaft back and forth gently with a bar (take the pull start off) until you get full movement. Cheers Rob
Gday Rob, it’s great when you something at the right price and can be brought back to life, what’s the oil called and where is the best place to buy it mate, I think I could find a little use for some, cheers Matty
Bravo! Lovely bit of recycling! Never used that oil. Is it any help for 2-stroke rings, say adding a little to the fuel, or maybe mixing the fuel with it as the oil? Thanks for sharing!
I've never heard of it being used in two strokes or tried that. It is a super high detergent oil so I expect it would work, same as using regular oil - which is OK for short term use. It's only over extended use that regular oil causes carbon build up problems. I see on forums that some RC guys use it in their two stroke engines. I dump a litre in the diesel ute tank when the injectors need a clean and it smooths out the engine nicely. Certainly shifts carbon under compression/heat conditions. Cheers Rob
xynudu Thank you. I have a little 2-stroke mantis tiller that seems ok when I have tested the compression, but sometimes it runs fine, other times it's a trouble. I wondered if it's ring sticks. Perhaps I could get it going & then when it's hot, stop it and pour some mystery oil (think redex in the uk is similar) into the plug hole & leave it as a way to clean the ring & its groove.
MMO and REDEX only remove carbon and gum while the engine is running - needs high temperature to work. It would be better to just inject a bit in the carby with the engine running on normal mix fuel. That can't hurt. Just squirt it in with an oil can or do as shown, but only put in just enough to get some smoke. Cheers Rob
It's no longer available in Oz either. But I can get Marvell Mystery Oil from the only supplier in Oz who just happens to be in Adelaide. Not cheap at $70 AU for four litres, but it lasts a long time and you only use a little bit. Nothing else comes close. Cheers Rob
Absolutely Shawn. It had so little compression you couldn't even feel it. It also wouldn't pull enough air in to get the carby working. I was positive the rings were gummed up from standing so long. So I dumped some gas in the spark plug hole and it slowly fired up to full speed. Then I hit it with the cleaning oil to get the rings working properly. Seems OK now. A cold start this morning will tell. Cheers Rob
Remember the movies where bad guy always dropped one just like it in the bath to kill the missus or whoever. Double insulation apparently doesn't work in that scenario ;)
Seriously just put a slug of this in the oil and over time it works the best. Fuel additive is a fast fix but in the oil is better long term. Frees rings, sticky valves and lifters very well. Don't put too much in the carb as shown or you can raise the compression too high. Cheers Rob
@@Xynudu thankyou and God has blessed you my brother. Thankyou once again for responding me. That generator was a scrape one bought frm the hunk yard. I alone worked on it. Friends were laughing 4me . But to their astonishment I manage to start it. My friends were were all amazed. The governor gear wheel is of plastic and white in colour. Sir how can I put myself on line so that we can share the engines chatt. If you are on whatsapp this is my number 7083300459
Hi Tony, I'm not on any chat groups. I have limited knowledge on this particular motor/genny but they all basically work the same way. You can email me on gloaming_agnet@hotmail.com if you think I may be able to help. Cheers Rob
Hi Geoffrey, Normally gennies run the same voltage right through the load range. That's what the engine governor is for. Under full load they usually only drop voltage by no more than 10%. I've worked on plenty of these things and that's why I was so surprised the Honda wouldn't idle back more. That's the way they made it. I will check to see if the governor spring may have weakened off a bit. Cheers Rob

Yes, it's pretty sad, but most folks can't fix anything. They have no idea.

Not as far as I know. Used to have redX at the pumps years ago.

Redex? Do they still make that stuff, haven't seen it for years.
Yes, but it's hard to find a distributor in Oz.
With the redex do you need to mix with a little petrol beforehand ?
No.
Awesome Rob , So did that oil help the compression out ?? Seems to run real good !
Absolutely Shawn. It had so little compression you couldn't even feel it. It also wouldn't pull enough air in to get the carby working. I was positive the rings were gummed up from standing so long.

Mustie1 Methadone!
Does the hair dryer go back in the bathroom when you're done with it?

Rob, do you ever watch Project Farm's videos? I think you'd like them M8.

Yes I have. Cheers Rob
I have an old school EX1000 with the same issue - gonna catch me some snakes (will it blend?) ;-)
Watch you don't get bit.

Is the oil made from brown snakes or taipans?
It's a mystery.
Sir why my em650 a same Honda generator keeps on pulsing. It's not constant at speed. Can you point out the mistake please?
Hi Tony,
It sounds like the governor is faulty. Check to see that the return coil spring is not broken.
Cheers Rob

The 70's were the best years of the last century.
I SO AGREE..
Coming Soon ... Rob makes a bird trap 😏
More like ..... Rob buys a shotgun.
After the engine is hot run some Kerosene through it, same result. that makes it burn hotter and ckeaner
Hi Frank,
I haven't tried that but will. I know that kero will break in rings quicker as it washes the oil off of the cylinders/liners.
Cheers Rob
