Why the Army is changing its entry rank for some reserve recruits

- A new initiative is to be trialled that will allow some civilians to join the Army reserves at a higher rank.
From the autumn the Army School of Physical Training will allow qualified civilian fitness professionals to join the Physical Training Corps as sergeants rather than entering training as a private.
It is hoped the move, which will come into place in September, will boost reserve numbers across the Army.

If the Army lacks trained physical trainers - why not hire them as civilian employees instead of giving civilians a military rank they have not earned through service and training - it undermines the military rank system.
@@graphwriter1 Someone hasn't been paying attention. Look at WW2, Ukraine and all the other conflicts where people from all walks of life have fought career soldiers to a standstill or at least made them bleed hard. Someone who works in investment analysis for example is perfect for intelligence even ignoring their capability to soldier once trained.

@@latch9781 8 years active duty combat engineer finished as a NCO and was headed to WO courses before injuries. Im fully aware of the mind set and capabilities of an individual. But flip side. Understanding strenghts and weaknesses. The military cant afford brain drains and wasting talents like Investment Analysts on conflict zones. I do think. Deeper then you may interpret. @@graphwriter1 since 2003 the Army reserve have been the back bone if the British Army The regular force is that small now I CAN'T deploy without reservists......if that's an uncomfortable truth for you that's your problem!

It’s the quality of the candidate not the identity.
Having civilians go into the army at a higher rank is out of order, paper qualifications do not mean that they can actually do the job in hand. This fast tracking has been used in other various jobs and they do not work, the people already in the job who will be working under them are expected to show and guide them through what and how the job works. That to me is unfair on the existing staff and is blocking their chances of promotion or progression.
The police implemented this policy where people could automatically enter the higher ranks with no previous experience. And just look at how our police force has become an absolute international laughing stock.

Mitigated in that A reserve sgt is not the same as a regular sgt.
After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, my father joined the USA Navy. He was a college graduate PT instructor and he entered the Navy as a Petty Officer. As he told it, the Navy did this so he outranked the seamen he was drilling. After the Guadalcanal landings, he volunteered for the Navy's "Underwater Demolition Teams" (UDT). They were the direct antecedent to today's Navy SEALs. Dad received a battlefield commission to Ensign and ended the war as a Lieutenant Junior Grade, was a UDT team commander, and has 9 Battle Stars on his Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

Yes but the U.S. military give out medals like candy and that’s me quoting my uncle Frank, who started as UDT’s was in the Suez Canal Crises and later SEAL’s in Vietnam.

Reserve pti course is 2 weeks the fulm time one is 8 or more you see the distinction if you were to transfer to a reg unit you would need to do the reg course.
They won't be deployed on operations as sgts, I'd assume.
It's not that it's a slap in the face to all ptis it's was a hard course and road to become PT core my friends who are PT core lads worked there ass to get it. I'm sure they have enough keen ptis to feel those slots. Admin jobs ye get lots of civis in but you want to lose quality of what British army is I think it will. And that PT core captain where's the hand 2 hand combat program should be weekly mandatory lessons ???? Look at UC , hubud Lubud empty hands what delta use

You don't need to have been in Combat to be a fitness instructor. It helps in a Fighting unit as a PTI because of the amount of different kit you have to carry. We need the Reservists more than ever at this present moment in time. Fast track would help with getting more civilians through the door as long as they have the teaching abilities that the Military needs. We need warriors on the front line not body builders.
Trigger pullers we have, or can get, but fitness trainers in the ranks are rare. If you could have one fitness trainer per company, regardless of the type, then that would be a total game changer. Especially for Reservists, where I must admit, we let fitness go lax, what with day jobs, families, etc. A fitness trainer could fix that with home programs, if only the troopers will adhere to them.

@@lachlanchester8142 I assume you’re referring to SNCO Aircrew? Entirely different. Aircrew Sgts are a very narrow niche with no real command responsibility. An Army PTI Sgt is required to command troops in significant numbers including JNCO’s who have completed Senior Brecon. Just for clarity I am a former RAF SNCO. Rgds.

When I joined the US Army National Guard in 1977 it was under a skills for stripes program. Became an E-5 6 months after completion of training....
They dont offer that anymore. So why work for a system where Nepotism is rampant?
Many years ago when working as a Nurse in London a patient who was an old soldier told me (after watching me spend another exhausting shift trying to persuade patients to co-operate with treatment) I should join the Army, where my rank as a Registered Nurse would mean they had to Obey Orders : ). Have to admit the idea had a certain appeal.
My sister was offered a captaincy in the Air Force, as a Registered Nurse. Not only would patients have to obey, you could make them lie at attention and salute in acknowlegement of your orders, if you felt the need. What fun!

Some branches of the U.S. Armed Forces Reserve have already been doing this, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and possibly the Army. Depending on critical specialty you can enter as an E-3 or E-4. I entered the service as an E-4 Petty Officer, age 27, at the start of the first Gulf War, but the requirements were far and away more strict and stringent than that for a regular enlisted recruit or even a Direct Commissioned Officer. I already had my University degree as well. I think there's a lot of benefit to the service and the population with such programs. The military gets a higher calibre, more mature, and for the most part already higher trained cadre. I had completed three years of high school ROTC which is the UK equivalent of the various Cadet Corps.

@@baronedipiemonte3990 They have had other programs for specialized skills. To 0-3 for lawyers (that came and went) and yes after boot camp rarely up to E-3. I did run into two guys that were direct commissioned to 0-4 for specific reason within the approval of the CMC
Some years ago as a serving police officer with around 12 years service and having CID experience I looked at what was then the TA. I was told that with my service and experience I would be taken into the RMP and fast tracked to the rank of Sgt. I would of course have still had to undergo basic training and start at the bottom.
Sadly the force I belonged to was, at the time, very hostile towards officers serving in the TA and rejected my application for permission to join.
Pity, I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed it..

@@nodramalama9531 CID = Criminal Investigation Department / Division in US terms Detectives. TA = Territorial Army aka Reserves. RMP = Royal Military Police. Sgt = Sergeant (in US terminology E5 / E6?)

No. Absolutely cannot. It's just too crowded at the top. And if someone seemingly random steps in, it's because when promoted, you are usually stationed far away from your former sphere of influence.

I could write a thesis on the pros and cons of this system. Back in the mid eighties, I had to leave due to the numbers educationally qualified to corporal but no positions in the trade. The question the MoD should have be asking back then was instead of transfering any soldier, sailor or airman to the Reserve after completing their service. They should have offered an optional transfer them to an active Territorial Unit, RAF Reserve Squadron, or RN Reserve Unit. Sadly I think it is down to short term Government policy. I believe we lost quite a lot of valuable experience, in my own case it took me 4 years to become really experienced, wiser, maturer and in some ways finding my identity! This maybe a way of the MoD trying to get PTI experience into the service quickly! I hope they have moved on since the eighties and really look after those who are in!

In the days of National Service men who went to univesity had their service defered until they finised. Some with the right degree became Corperals after basic training then Sargents after trade training. Others went to an OTC and became officers. Young women who qualified as State Registered Nurses entered as officers. One SRN I knew of went in as a Lt. and six months later was a Capt. So this is not new.
This reporter needs to look at the questions she's asking, in a environment where equality is being massively pushed to the front of everything (and so it should be.)
How can questions like"what's it like to be a woman here..." Still be relevant? Instantly undermines that particular individuals efforts by making it sound like they're less capable.
Why not just have more civilian PTIs, you just need the one Q man to run the site.
We had plenty when I was at a phase 2 establishment and it wasn't an issue.
The soldiers are professional and will do whatever is asked.
At unit level it's mostly class 3/2 people doing it anyway
If you want a challenge, train at an altitude of a mile above sea level and see what results you get.

One problem I’ve had with Army Reserves. “It’s such a change from my everyday job”. Is she serving the needs of the Army, or is the Army Reserves serving her personal needs? I was both a reserve and regular soldier. If you’re not on the path to prepare for greater service or mentoring those on the way to such service, it’s a waste of taxpayers money and simply a social club.

In the sixties we had physical training instructors in each regiment. What happened. The armchair generals who sat. On their arsees in the mod stopped all the training. These are the. People responsible for the decline in fitness in our army. Chinless wonders. Who do not know their arse from their elbows.

@@pipercessna3827 You have little to no understanding of what soldiering entails. Think more: She won't be able to patrol with 150lbs of equipment. She won't be able to run, crawl, crouch, climb, and yes, shoot accurately while in a firefight with full battle order on. She won't be able to carry her severely injured squadmates for hundreds of metres uphill or on the flat. She won't be able to keep up with her squadmates. Hence presenting a liability due to lack of unit maneuverability, also she will fall behind in combat. She is also orders of magnitude more likely to get injured in combat, due to the unchangeable structure of her skeleton, leading to extremely high rates of hip fractures, ankle fractures, shin splints, spinal problems, shoulder and clavicle problems and many other skeletal injuries (all those studies came just from recruit training which is nowhere near the real thing). She would also likely suffer hormonal problems due to everything that happens while on Tours of Duty (many women in the US military suffered infertility even if not directly involved in combat in an infantry role due to the stresses of deployment and exposure to combat).

The army may advertise differently but in generals they reject anything flat out
I think it depends on what It is.. ultimately it's up to an army doctor to give you a waiver, but it's possible.
Depends on what you were diagnosed with and the type and length of medication taken. Acute depression treated with something like sertraline is fine.
@ProjectsBlack I meant in your medical history, I also know a few soldiers have been on treatment for depression and are still in but I would think you'd be put on a 'not fit for deployment' if that was the case. As for joining yes it may stop you from joining if you're currently in treatment.
