  • 🏆 Are you a Sports Parent? Watch this to avoid mistakes with your young athlete 🏆
If you're a parent of a young athlete or plan to involve your child in sports, this video is a must-watch! We'll provide you with essential tips and advice to avoid common mistakes that well-intentioned sports parents often make.
Disclaimer: ⚠️ If you're an overbearing sports parent who lives vicariously through your child's athletic journey, be prepared - this video might challenge your perspective.
Key Mistakes Covered in this Video:
    1. Living Vicariously: Allow your child to choose their own path and interests, avoiding the trap of imposing your unfulfilled dreams on them.
    2. Pushing Too Hard: Find the right balance between pushing for improvement and letting your child enjoy the sport to prevent burnout, stress, and resentment.
    3. Comparisons with Others: Avoid comparing your child's performance to others, focusing instead on their personal progress.
    4. Negative Reinforcement: Learn why negative reinforcement isn't effective or healthy for your child's development.
    5. Poor Sportsmanship: Be a positive role model and avoid negative behavior towards referees, opposing teams, or others.
    6. Overloading with Activities: Consider the importance of breaks and rest for your child's growth and development, even if they enjoy multiple activities.
    7. Ignoring Fun and Enjoyment: Ensure your child genuinely enjoys the sport they participate in, focusing on the fun factor.
    8. Ignoring the Coach's Authority: Respect your child's coach and their expertise to create a supportive environment.
    9. Overemphasis on Winning: Emphasize effort, improvement, and skill development over winning, teaching valuable lessons in handling loss.
    10. Micromanaging Performance: Allow your child the freedom to make decisions during the game without constant instructions.
    11. Lack of Balance: Encourage a well-rounded life for your child, balancing sports with academics, socializing, and personal interests.
    12. Unrealistic Expectations: Avoid setting unattainable goals and pressuring your child to perform beyond their capabilities.
Remember, a supportive and balanced approach that prioritizes your child's well-being, enjoyment, and personal growth is crucial. Their sports journey is for them, not you.

We just wrapped up the football season today. I coached for the first time w/out any experience (playing or coaching). Because they really needed coaches. I was asst/safety coach. If I can do it, anyone can. Trust me. At first I was pretty nervous for a myriad of obvious reasons…4th grader playing tackle football (no flag avail)
and my lack of football knowledge being the main reasons... it ended up being the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had in my life. My son and I are now closer than ever! It was a joy watching all of the boys grow so much in 3 months. We won our first game today and all the boys played their best game of the season hands down. My little guy had 15 tackles, 120 yds and 4 TD’s😊. Proud papa/coach. Sad it’s over! On to ski/basketball season!

Thanks for posting this. I had a parent that was over eager for me to perform well in sports. My mom tells me horror stories of my Dad screaming at me on the baseball diamond. I am trying to avoid that with my child now. Thanks for posting this.

Comparisons is something my parents never did and I really appreciated that. This video also works for parents of musicians and performers.

I disagree with some of this ! You cannot have positive without negative ! Focus on both

Thanks for the suggestion but privacy, along with consent, has always been valued. Now that they are older, if they desired to be in a video we would then have the discussion.
