  • In Part 1 and 2 we talked about the ceiling of the core which is our diaphragm and the floor of the core which is our pelvic floor muscles.
In Part 3 we are talking about what’s in between which is:
    - the transverse abdominis (TA)
    - the multifidi
These muscles work together acting like an internal back brace or corset. They work on a feed forward response which means they turn on before any of our big muscles move us or work. They also work on a demand system which means they only contract strong enough as needed for the job ahead. They don’t contact the same if you’re picking up a pencil that fell as they do if you’re carrying 10 bags of groceries in the house!
These muscles can shut down during pregnancy, chronic pain, surgeries to the spine or abdomen area, or with an injury/trauma and need u to o be retrained to fire correctly again.
Another interesting fact is that these muscles fire together and along with the pelvic floor muscles. They also fire more efficiently on the exhale which will take us to Part 4 of this series which is putting it all together to use the core effectively and in day to day tasks.
