  • I build a roof rack for my SUV so I can transfer lumber and move doors. This rack is made with metal fencing and it's all attached by screws. No welding involved. It also has a special door loading mechanism for those in the door business.

Rust will be an issue with steel, especially in between the gaps where the pieces join. Maybe try fill it with Sikaflex or something similar. But this is really smart, I love projects like this. I'm going to give it a go but with an aluminium gate piece

This is exactly what I was looking for, but looking at using the 4-foot aluminum fence to attach to my existing rack for an old ford expy.

Actually, this was pretty cheap, just very labor intensive. I've made 6 more since then. Ultimately, I took a one day welding course and welded a custom frame that is absolutely perfect. I've been at this for 20 years and to this day, I am always refining my systems. Thanks for watching

Wow!!! With your video, I just found the roof rack for my 1999 Expedition made from some old metal fencing that I can use. Now, to figure out how to also make it a stand-on/sleep-on platform? Thank you very much. :)

I want to take off this. I'm thinking of putting plywood over it and making a cargo carrier for my van I can walk on and attach my solar panels to. I'm going through different designs in my head, but a large cargo carrier is expensive and I don't weld.
2 4'x8' sheets, a fence panel, some 2x6s, gas struts, seals. I could make an aerodynamic cargo carrier and occasional roof deck. Nothing fancy. Attach it to a cheap roof rack. The usual rusty parts will get covered.
It would be fairly cheap and nothing would compare. This could give me some strength. Thanks!

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing. Where did you purchase the metal bar from? The one that slides in and out.

When it rusts (and it will), it'll drip down yellow liquid almost impossible to clean on your car paint.

It depends on the material. Some are aluminum, some are steel. I have a convertible roof or hitch carrier. It was rusting on my roof. Spray paint it and seal any openings so no water gets in. I am concerned about all the screw holes.
