This is a REALLY old popular sandwich from our grandparents generation that were super poor. They also ate banana and mayo sandwiches, onion and mustard sandwiches, and onion and mayo sandwiches. The peanut butter and onion one had the added benefit of a little protein. I remember watching my mema HAPPILY eat one of these peanut butter and onion creations when she had a random craving for it while on chemo.
Old buddy of mine used to eat peanut butter and onion sandwiches. He put cheese and barbecue sauce on 'em too, though. Honestly, I could almost understand the cheese and peanut butter if you put it with apple slices or something, but that's just about the only way I can see any of that shit working together.
I love PBnJ and some admittedly weird twists to it. I love onions too, have some crazy stories from my childhood about it. But I would never, ever, mix the 2. Just because you like, or even love 2 different foods, does NOT mean they will taste good together. A perfect example, sometimes when you burp you can taste a random mixture of anything you ate or drank. But it rarely will taste good.
