    I’m kind of binge-watching your videos on Where the Gnomes Live....you’ve inspired me to build my own tree stump dollhouse for my granddaughter that was just born. I deeply appreciate your generosity in putting out these tutorials on SO many things!

    I just wanted to mention that instead of using stain to accent the crevices in the tree, you can take a cup of water and take a paint brush with water-based black paint and dip the brush into the water until the water is tinted to your preference -- this is called a "wash". Then clean your brush off of the thick paint and brush on the tinted water to accent the crevices. It's best to clear coat it once first so it seals the brown colors that you've applied if they are water-based. I've built 100's of show piece model cars,military aircraft models, electric guitars and I know a lot of tricks to achieve weathered, natural or a perfect mirror finish. I'm just terrible at making videos lol. Sharon, your houses look really nice, I'm just trying to help you and everyone else by sharing my knowledge. Cheers

    Hi Sharon and friends, years ago I taught MR clients when we would use hot glue guns I would give each client a bowl of ice, I taught them that when the hot glue gets on your skin quickly put your hand into the ice/ melt water. POoF no burn and no pain! Hope this helps many.

    • @SharonOjala

      Theresa LaBrecque it's a good idea for sure. I do keep a bowl beside me now. A few good burns and I've learned my lesson. Thanks for sharing, I hope others read this great tip before starting a project!

    Hi Sharon, I also wanted to add, if you have a problem with your floors bowing and you make a lot of them. A great investment would be 1 or 2 "bar clamps". You can find them at Canadian Tire, Home Depot or Lowe's -- probably Home Hardware too, in a variety of sizes. You can put your floors at the edge of a table, place 1 book on top and clamp them over night. I think a small clamp would be about $10 or so. The clamps have rubber pads on the end too, so they won't gouge your book or your table. Cheers

    I am in the process of doing one right now. just a small 2 story. I am about to apply the paper towels right now. I just wanted to say that so far the masking tape took the longest amount of time. I did not get non stick but the tape wouldn't stick to it when it is crumbled up. So i had to dab bits of hot glue on the tape to get it to stick. I also made a lot of detail with the tin foil and it was somewhat difficult to get the tape into all the cracks and crevices. Regardless, I am having a lot of fun and am absolutely loving the results so far. By the way I found your channel by browsing thru fairy garden ideas on pinterest.

    this is such a cool concept. I'm trying to make a staff out of pvc pipe and wanted to make it look like wood. I didn't want to use wood because I'm going to add lights to it so that parts glow, and a hollow tube is easier to warp with a heat gun rather then warping wood.

    I made an amazingly awesome almost 3ft tree using your tutorial! Thank you so much! It's been an awesome and fun project for a completely left-brained non-creative person to do since you explained it so well. I'm doing a nature theme in my bedroom and the tree just goes amazing--a matching house is next. I would REALLY love to see a tutorial on how to do the steps/porch though. I did a gnome door at the bottom of my tree and 3/4 of the way up I left another hole for a door/window but I can't seem to wrap my head around how to do the steps and porch because I'm scared of messing it all up now that the tree is actually strained and sealed already. Looking forward to the tutorial! Thanks so much again and I really wish there was a way to post a picture :)

    your tin foil is very strong we dont have that here in OZ only very light weight so have to use a lot more I think!

    I used cheap toilet paper to make my "N" scale train landscaping and that worked really well paper towels without pattern are hard to find!

    • @SharonOjala
      @SharonOjala  Před 8 lety

      +Ammiel7 for some of this house I believe I used the more expensive kind, I can't remember but just cheap tin foil works just as well. I just buy super cheap tin foil, I don't pay attention to how much but 50 feet should be plenty for a large project like this one. And again, cheap paper towels, the super cheap kind usually has no pattern. I find mine at Walmart and about 88 cents for 2 rolls which is plenty enough for a house this size. But of course supplies will depend on the stores close to where you live and what they stock and so on. If you have a dollar store close by see what they carry for paper and tin foil

    I noticed in this video, after the tinfoil, you used the tape, and then the paper towel. But in the video "fake bark tree stump house part 3", you put the paper towel with over newspaper that was taped around (I assume) the tinfoil. Is there a reson to do them differently? Does one work better than the other? Love your work!

    I started making one of these for my daughter from a round, lidded paper mâché box. My question, how many layers of paper towel do you typically do? Have you ever tried using colored tissue paper (like the kind you use for gift bags)?

    • @SharonOjala
      @SharonOjala  Před 9 lety

      Lizzy Allen I think the tissue paper from gift bags would become a gooey mess and fall apart too easily but I haven't tried it myself. I do one layer and make sure to overlap the edges as I go. Make sure to push out any air bubbles. After it dries if you feel it could use more texture then add more layers here and there until you are happy with the look

For the wrap around porch I cut a piece of cardboard that would fit perfectly to the tree then shaped tinfoil over top and then added the bark. I hot glued the one edge to the tree and that seemed sturdy enough but I added 3 branches underneath for further strength.

    When you paper mâchéd the box with newspaper... did you use the same glue/water mixture?

    • @SharonOjala
      @SharonOjala  Před 7 lety

      yes. But to save on the cost of glue, or if I'm running out of glue late at night, I have done layers of the regular paper mache paste then after that was dry I used a layer of glue and water. I find the glue and water mixture gives a much stronger, smoother finish.. the flour and water has a crispy finish.

    I have been making a fairy house and the furniture from twigs etc, but I have trouble with the glue from the hot glue gun making a mess or running down where I don't want it to go . How do you manage to keep things so neat. .

    • @SharonOjala
      @SharonOjala  Před 8 lety +1

      for small things it's hard to use the hot glue gun but I suppose just barely pulling the trigger helps or maybe the gun is too hot and needs to cool a little. If you have spider web type strings those can get cleaned up super fast by using a blow dryer.

      anywhere, it doesn't matter where you start. Just put something down under it to catch the glue that drips while it dries

    How hard does the paper mache get? I am considering using this method for a Gandalf staff, I am just concerned as to whether it would stand up to handling. I was thinking that a flour based mache might get harder. At worst I could use a textile Hardener, but as they are $30 I'd like to avoid it. Your help is greatly appreciated!

    • @SharonOjala
      @SharonOjala  Před 9 lety

      operadude101 paper mache clay hardens like a cement. I make my own using soaked toilet paper, glue, drywall compound and flour. You can just do a search for homemade paper mache clay here on youtube. The recipe I use is from a paper mache artist (look through her vids, she has a couple recipes now, the older recipe works great) and her channel is Ultimate Paper Mache

      ***** I had considered the clay, but I have found your method for creating the wood effect to be the best, and I am not certain how I would apply that with clay. I suppose id I thinned it I could brush it over the Mached Paper Towels?

      I haven't made texture from it. I should have added there is a bit of shrinkage too once it completely dries. Honestly, I think if you did the tinfoil, masking tape and layer the paper towel it would hold up just fine. Also try a stiff wire under the tin foil. Just be sure to tape the foil to the ends of the wire or it could slide loose. I really think that would hold up to normal handling, even some rough handling

    Try staining your wood before you glue it down.

    • @SharonOjala
      @SharonOjala  Před 9 lety

      I wouldn't do that. It's easy and quick to wash it after all the sticks are glued down. The stain gets applied a few times plus a sealer after so a simple wash cuts down a lot of time.

    • @haynerbass
      @haynerbass Před 9 lety +2

      Fair enough. I do that when I make furniture to avoid having the glue seal up the wood before I stain it. It doesn't seem to matter how well I wash it down I never get it all off before I stain.
