  • I've been using the Retevis RT95 Mobile Ham Radio in my Jeep TJ as a daily driver for a little over a month now. How did this radio stack up in the elements 24/7? I've done a full review of this $100 mobile.
The RT95 is getting a new home in my new Jeep JK. Help me decide where.

Thank you for a through evaluation. To me this is the essence of amateur radio, a basic radio with straightforward controls at a reasonable price. Bells and whistles add to more confusion during crucial times when the radio is truly needed.

Mounted on an angle on the side where your door opens up I think it'll work good deal with the velcro pad

Just picked one of these up in the US but under the Midland brand, pn DBR2500. Same radio as the Anytone AT-778UV and Retevis RT95. Software is on the Midland website and they run specials. Got it plus the programming cable, shipped in the US for $107. Hopefully Chirp will support it soon.

This radio can be pretty confusing because it's so loaded with Menus, however You go thru the menus clearly and get right to the point. Very helpful! ...I already have an ICOM mobile for My truck but because this Anytone At-778 (same as the Retevis RT95) is so tiny and light I'm using it as a backpack radio instead. . In this application it offers more power than an HT while I'm on hikes.. Thanks again for your straight-forward and excellent video.

Put it right where you want and need it to go. Eventually, your wife will come to terms with it. You are making very valid points on placement, (and yes I am also happily married).

A little more money, but a Yaesu FT7900 with remote head works great. Main body in the back near the tailgate. High so no water. Remote head is very small and can go left of the driver on the dash.

I tried the Rugged Ridge CB mount in my 2014 JK - works OK depending on the size/weight of the radio, but I didn't like the display being up that high. I eventually got the Yaesu FTM-400 and a glass mount on the windshield for the remote head and the radio is mounted under the driver seat. Also put a small remote speaker behind the covering around the roll bar/speaker mount just above the driver's seat by cutting out a piece of the foam padding

If you go with a headless unit you may be able to fit in a pelican like case, just put some holes in for the cables and mount anywhere it fits. I haven't tried this method but it seems like it may work.

Hmm. If you mount it on the dash, it seems like it would get cooked in hot weather. Up above you'd have to deal with the dangling mic cord. Can you go down low in front of the shifter?

I'd use one of the Goose Neck mounts that mount to the seat bracket & allows the radio to be moved around some via the flex mount. The radio is light enough that it should work just fine & it won't be on the floor of the vehicle.I have heard that some of these radios drop off in the output power when they get HOT.Have you tested yours for this issue? Thanks & 73

in your case you have limited mounting options without installing a t-bar in the roof trying to the high and dry..
Confer with the wife though she will not have much say n the matter..
REMOTE HEAD may be the only legal way to go in this scenario you may have to go with a shielded cable scenario and find someway of mounting the radio or radios bases in a water proof container.
At this stage the only option in a radio I can suggest would be is a yaesu 817/857 and its replacement digital only radio to cover what you need and I would expand the radio into the cb band because you aren't going to get a a traffic report from the ham band that is for sure

I love my 2005 Rubicon, Getting my radio install going. I am going to pull the top to put in a custom overhead rack system to mount radios, gun racks, etc.... having a machine shop means options, but also means it takes more time. Does the software function on Linux, or is it limited to the clunky world of Windows?

I have a 2018 2 door jk with a Yaesu FT 857, I mounted my head up above the mirror with a modified rugged ridge cb mount. I wonder if you would have room for your light switch panel under your radio if you went with that? I can send you a pic of my set-up if you would like but I do not have a light switch panel there. I mounted my radio under the passenger side seat but was thinking about mounting it in the back on one of the side panels.
