- This is a re-upload of my KH superboss retrospective. The original had some audio issues that bothered me and I was finally able to get around to fixing it up some.
I highly recommend watching superboss-specific videos for more in depths details. There's a lot of neat bits I didn't cover here. Also if you saw me be bad at a fight, no you didn't.
This video was created as a part of March Caprice 2024, a Kingdom Hearts fan event. Please check it out!

Corrections/Notes:
1. Mysterious Figure in Birth by Sleep was actually added in the international release. It was not present in the original Japanese release.
2. I included Monstro since his Arena fight is just his boss fight like the other superbosses. I know he isn't the most difficult but he's setup sort of like them and his fight is neat to me.
A little cool detail about all these bosses is how they all collectively fuck my ass up the same
The cool thing about the Unknown boss fight is that its a KH2 fight in KH1
Unknown kicked my ass so hard. Probably the most memorable moment I had with KH 1 Final Mix.
The first fight with Xemnas in Kingdom Hearts 2 is so obviously a callback to that fight for those who experienced it first. Then again I suppose that was meant to be obvious given Xemnas' 'death' quote 'So, it _wasn't_ a fallacy'.
SHADOW WIZARD MONEY GANG. WE LOVE CASTING SPELLS🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
20:16 I think it's worth mentioning that these two bosses need some ridiculous preparations in order to reach them. SkywardWing's "The Kingdom Hearts Secret Boss NO ONE Knows About!" goes into these requirements in detail, but tl;dr especially Bugged Riku requires the usage of StreetPass like features that makes even reaching the boss borderline impossible for a normal player. Though as SkywardWing demonstrates, there is a workaround with some emulation trickery, but is a longwinded process.
We are cut from the same cloth. Love the Sonic Adventure theme, 20 years later still hoping for a Chao comeback.
Came to a KH video, didn't expect chao
(currently replaying sa2 fresh save)
A surprise to be sure, but not an unwelcome one
To this day I still haven’t beaten lingering will
You can just cheese him with the air attack and the Fenrir KB.
I beat him in 5 tries 🤓🧂

I know a lot of people were disappointed that Sephiroth wasn’t in KH3. I just love how in KH2 he kicks your ass until you yourself are good then just brushes it off at the end and pretty much says to bring him Cloud.
With KH coming to PC on Steam I wonder how many new fans will be able to take out the various supervosses
EJ: "to get some digital trophies on playstation?"
Me: YEAH!
EJ: "no for glory"
Me: "Oh yeah..."
Calling it 179 killed me 😭
Great video. When you got to the bbs section, you somehow made the bosses sound fun and interesting, but as someone that platinumed bbs on critical, none of them are really fun :(. giving bbs a d rank at the end felt very deserved
Shoutout to decisive pumpkin and retaliate combo in kh2, that’s how I beat sephy the first time
Kh3 data fights and yozora are my favourite boss fights in any game. At this point I defeated most of them with pro codes on critical, but my first run (critical) against them is unforgettable, both for difficulty and their amazing design. Also I can't believe how hard Yoko Shimomura went with every single OST in these fights, just amazing.
0:49 bro rlly hit the “Hollywoo stars and celebrities, what do they know? Do they know things? Let’s find out
Yozora gotta be one of the greatest jrpg bosses of all time
it's pretty incredible how they were able to combine A+ gameplay with A+ cinematics. i really didn't think they could pull it off. i held kh2fm superbosses up as the gold standard and thought they should try and just follow that formula because it couldn't get better, but i was wrong. the kh3 superbosses are more fun to fight, less gimmicky, have less bullshit unfair mechanics and look much better. there are a few kind of lame attacks on a few of the bosses (vanitas has a few stupid attacks that are borderline unreactable and yozora's mech phase of his dm come to mind), but overall the fights are able to blend the visual beauty of kh3 in with an incredibly fun and satisfying combat system without it feeling like you're watching a cutscene like was often the case in the base game, or like the control is being taken from the character in any way. i really didn't think they had it in them but yeah, yozora really was one of the best bosses i've ever fought and the data bosses are just as high quality.
As a sucker for superbosses in Square Enix games, I set myself out on a journey to beat KH2 AND KH3 on level 1 Critical mode. The journey is slow and tiring but I am now at the point in BOTH games where I am facing the data org battles and boooy are they trying my patience!
Did you beat em yet
I was, like, "... have I seen this video before?" lol Oh well, just as entertaining and informative the 2nd time around!
I'm not gonna lie, dude: seeing how beautifully well these KH graphics and combat animations aged, and how dope these bosses look, I'm *really* tempted to get fully invested into the games.
I personally recommend that you give it a shot. The 1.5 + 2.5 collection is a great place to jump in if you want to get into the series.
I honesty 2.5 may be my favorite game of all time since it's combat was just so fun
Loved the Bojack reference at the very beginning!
I just want to let you know that I see and really appreciate the BoJack horseman reference at the beginning of the video
Loved the Shadow Wizard Money Gang references. Good video. Subbed.
You forgot to mention that some of the Superbosses in KH1 changed tactics or even became stronger if you used Aero to defend yourself, meaning you had to fight them without using it.
For example, the icicles used by the Ice Giant become bigger and stronger if you use Aero, meaning you can no longer guard against them to bounce them back.
I was expecting that to be mentioned here too. If you were a player that loved abusing Aero that fight was disappointing but still a nice added detail to force players to adapt.
combining my two favorite video games together in a vid is so crazy for me
Amazing video with such detail! Will return to form and play these games too. Subscribed!
I don't know what the difference is, but it's still a great video.
My personal super boss is the damned Emeralad Sonata from Days. There's a mission where you have to kill a few of them as they run away from you in the Wonderland hedge maze and WOW, it was so so frustrating to get full rank in that mission
Hey, Phantom Aqua in 0.2 would be a preparation for ReMind where there are red glow attacks all over the place that shatter guards
Respects for mentioning Dust Flier from Kh 358 days. He had no business being that epic.
Always have a part of me that wants to tackle the super bosses, but I'm not sure I'll ever have the persistence to pull them off. I've only ever beaten Kurt Zisa/Phantom/Ice Titan in KH1, and Sephiroth in Kh2, so there are quite a lot I haven't managed at all (I used tornado cheese with ventus the Vanitas fight in BBS but I don't feel like I can accept that xD)
There's always a part of me that wants to, but I won't be surprised if at best I can get myself to beat KH1 Sephiroth if I pick up the series again. Data Org and the like all feel so daunting to me lmao
Mysterious Figure is easily the worst superboss of the first game. It's literally just a technical, learn-as-you-go fight until he fuckin' whips out the random-ass command-menu-instant-death if you don't get lucky. It's luck. I've seen so many strategies, tutorials, all of it. When you play that fight, you're just praying to every god you can think of that you nail it or you literally just die. Fuck that boss for that reason alone.
Seph was fun to learn.
I remember not having much trouble with him but it took me literal years to beat Sephiroth. I was probably just in the groove by the time I got to him
Shadow wizard money gang is just a perfect rendition of that organization
To this day Yozora is the hardest video game boss fight I’ve ever had. It took me months to take him down because I’d second guess myself and that 1/100th second mistake is all it would take for him to come back and beat me.
I was so excited and proud when I finally beat him.
When I revisited KH1 I remember leveling 30 levels through Sephiroth before beating Unknown.
Once you know Sephiroth's Moveset and abuse Leaf Bracer to I-Frame his oneshot skill, he becomes pretty tame.
My older brother introduced me to KH when I was 4, and it was really awesome to do the KH3 superbosses together. We were both level 58, and it was crazy how we would get them within 5 or so attempts relative to each other 😂. I’m a huge Dark Souls fan, and I absolutely love the data battles, since it’s basically like there’s 13 bosses that make Malenia look like a bitch crammed into one game.
Thx u for this vid elbow juice
Biggest problem i had with kh3 was the endgame.
I was hoping it would be the first main game that was actually complete. So when I finished it, i never went back.
Being left completely unsatisfied with the superboss. I gave up on the game and unistalled. I just now found out there was dlc watching this video.
Im interested enough to try it again.
Also bbs was really cool with the battle deck imo. I really liked being able to customize my abilities. the experience made me forget i was playing a portable game at all.
the DLC is BY FAR the most fun I had with KH3, and I think that's a pretty shared sentiment with most people. new moves for Sora, the data org/yozora all feel more like KH2 bosses, and a bunch of juiced up themes for the data real-org fights to make them all feel fresh and worth experiencing for alone.
also the remind episode was pretty cool and a little more satisfying of a finale than the base game, but i found it to be a little forgettable relative to limitcut stuff
How the hell you don't know about remind? I don't even fuck with DLC but Dragon Ball, Spider and Kingdom Hearts made me change my mind. Boy, do you even follow KH??? Not sorry cuz that shit came out years ago even if you didn't buy it... Talk about under a rock
@MikoArkamei
I followed and completed all the the games since its inception.
As I said kh3 was so disappointing for me that I uninstalled and paid it no mind for years.
Also no I don't live under a rock I just have a job like most people and I cannot allocate as much time to play games like when I was 12.
Judging from all the Sonic Adventure 2 inspired stuff, I'm guessing you're also a Sonic fan, aren't you?
My hot take is I think Lingering Will was harder than Yozura.
I’m still upset we didn’t get a full Final Mix treatment for KH3.
Well we've KH4 coming soon so what they failed yo do in KH3 there's a chance they'll learn from it this time around.
Recently 100%’ing KH 1.5 & 2.5 FM, I can safely say beating Sephiroth and Lingering Will gave me a joy that I’ll hold onto for awhile lol
This is a very interesting video.
The transition at 17:54 was very clean
kh2 video with sa2 music, a video made for me specifically
re coded had the best command system
You're wild.
I still can't believe they've put Batman in there as a knight.
(joke at the design of Lingering Will)
We have the re:member fan mod by ven, but I can’t wait to see how Sora incorporates Yozora’s moves from the dlc.
Mysterious Figure was the only new addition to the English version of Kingdom Hearts 1
BBS superbosses biggest issue (felt the same during the final boss) is that your main commands dont work anymore. Ars solumn doesnt works even if you have an opening due to the ranom stagger break, and many other commands just.... dont do anything. Thus the play has to spam rolls and surges to do any meaningful damage. Revenge value would have been much better here
😂that logo at the beginning go hard ngl
Xion my beloved…
Noct… I mean Yozora my other beloved
Great video
8:35 really surprised me because not to toot my own horn too much but my last few play through on Proud and Critical Mode had me obtaining the gold crown before reaching 70. Not to say the fights weren’t a grind each on their own though. I got pretty competent with Lingering Will’s Revenge Counter and reflecting his penultimate attack near the second phase. The only time I maxed out Lvl. 99 was on vanilla KH II for naught💀
You can't mention Recoded without the Eliminator, a much stronger version of the Defender heartless that can appear and chase you in lategame floors. It's a quick KO if you're not prepared.
I like for the SA2 themes and video concept
Hand it over, that thing, your Kingdom Heart.
Funfact: Enigmatic Solider (remember that name?) has the most difficult patterns for any KH boss in the series still, because of not only starting differently based on some variables hardly comprehensible but also based on equipment he changes his attack patterns and overall he has about 142(?) attack patterns to show off. He still is my favorite boss in the entire series. Xion wins by emotional tie for me (also because she has the best KH3 battle theme for me, I dont rly like the others being over orchestrated in there) but Enigmatic Soldier/Lingering Will wins in terms of fair comprehensive challenge!
I have a deep scar with mysterious figure
Unkown in KH1 was funny, since I beat him on my first try by spamming the one move that gave invuln during the animation
Still the first videogame series that comes to mind when I think of the term "Superbosses". I even appreciate some of the questionably/objectively awfully designed stuff like Mysterious Figure (and most of the superbosses in the handheld entries, really) on some level, because I genuinely can't find that blend of top tier aesthetics and genuinely bonkers "was this even playtested" encounter design in any other series.
That said, True Data Org into Yozora is one of the best boss gauntlets I've experienced in the medium. Genuinely can't wait to see if KH4 has boss design to match it, be it in the base game or in DLC (And tbh, I think I'd almost prefer the latter)
A Kingdom Hearts video with Sonic Adventure 2 music... I love it.
I wonder if there was some planned significance to phantom that was scrapped either late in development or when the other superbosses were added in the later revisions. It is the only unimportant entity in the series that I can remember using doom and its design of a cloak containing a heart is kinda like what Ansem was before yoinking a body.
20:27 And these fights are bad. Second to MF in the ranking of "worst KH secret bosses". And that is a shame because it's imo one of the best games in the series otherwise.
...I now have a strong urge to play Sonic Adventure 2.
Watching sora use metal chocobo against bosses where you need to use magic (or at all, it’s awful) is painful. Higher MP = stronger spells (in KH1).
My older brother played kingdom hearts, I was a bit too young. I had never heard of a secret boss before, much less of Sephiroth. I thought Sephiroth was bringing in the end of the world. My older brother let me try the fight and I died in 30 seconds. I flipped when he finally beat Sephiroth.
I'd argue the superbosses in KH2 and KH3 are better puzzles than KH1. If we want to talk about Phantom, for example, that fight's "puzzle" is matching colours and making sure you brought enough ethers for a 6-10 minute fight. For Ice Titan, that one's more about timing your blocks correctly. For KH2 and KH3, the puzzle is finding out when you're able to damage the boss without getting damaged yourself. Both of games have bosses unleashing barrages of attacks on you, but unlike BBS and DDD, the bosses have consistent openings that can be taken advantage of. However, you need to find the openings and some of the later fights do a really good job of hiding where the openings are.
In recoded, you can fight Xehanort dual wielding red light sabers
Imma be real. MF is a great boss battle. Yeah he’s unbelievably punishing, but also literally everything staggers him, almost all of his moves have a big predictable window where you can hit him, and the game gives you infinite I-frame spam. The reason nobody likes him is because he’s a skill battle in a tech game and nothing prepares you for him except maybe Terranort.
Using metal chocobo against phantom is such a flex lol. Most mp dependent fight in the game and this guy goes in eith a keyblad that reduces mp lol
There's a reason Mysterious Figure's initials are MF.
MF DOOM??!?!?!?!?!
HAHA!! 😂😂😂😂😂
@@Pie_The_ManConsidering most players are doomed in that fight, Nice reference.
For some of the Data organization members I was around level 60 due to them being gimmick fights.
To this day, I still couldn't beat the Young Xehanort/Mysterious Figure and Vanitas Remnant in "Legit" way and needs to fight them in a cheap way. Y'know, using Minefield magic and the Surge magic (Fire, Lightning, Barrier)
Xemnas is the only kh1 superboss you can cheese afaik. You can loop him using gravity. It's not as trivial as negative combo spam but it's definitely cheese.
17:56 we gotta put some resepct on that
I didn't know that anyone else called it 179 Days.
why did that kingdom hearts have the sa2 font
Hell yeah new Elbow Juice upload!
You mentioned that you can’t really cheese fights in KH1, but that’s very much not true. Strike Raid makes you fully invulnerable during the entire cast window, so you can just spam it until you run out of mp. The only time you’re vulnerable at all is when you’re popping an elixir to refill your hp/mp which means that you *can* die, but it’s pretty unlikely. I beat sephiroth and unknown like this and while sephiroth took a couple attempts, unknown was one and done.
Mad man : “how interesting . I’m going to kill them all on level 1.”
Data org : “you’re bluffing.”
Mad man : “on critical mode.”
Data org : “Are you insane?!”
Mad man : “on level 1”
Data org : “lol, there is no way”
Mad man : “it’s morbin time!”
So began a long standing tradition of super bosses in kh being massacred by Sora.
man besides a few data fights (both KH2 and 3), yazora, sepiroth and the mirrage arena bosses, most of the super bosses where just.... depressing. when i first got my hands on KH2FM i one tried F***ING TERRA. like, yeah they were well fought, but somehow i didn't have that hard of a time when it was an actual fight and not a gimmick. fond memories though.
Mysterious Figure was annoying especially on like Terra, and the IF on the dodge roll I'd sometimes get clipped through it with that spear move
Kh3 may have not been a perfect game by pacing standards but it perfected the combat, the data fights feel more like a dance after learning them, since on critical you get hit once and end up at 1 hp. And being designed to be played at max level they don't leave room for grinding, the only thing between losing or winning is YOUR physical execution
I beat Yozora but not Lingering Will because I didn’t level up Sora to level 99 in KH2
bro you literally make all the fights sound like a cake walk... 😥😅
Not to ruin the illusion, but I'm on beginner mode for most of these and used EZ codes for KH3 footage 😂
@@elbow_juice same minus the footage part
I would say proud wasn't too bad but aside unknown i was over leveled and had ultima for the rest
What about the the super boss from KH2s gummi ship mission?
Kurt sisza is a kids name who won a contest.
A Japanese kid?
man I beat all the secret bosses of kh1, kh2 ( cheese lingering will). but fuck once bbs came all these super bosses became just one hit killers, no flinch if you mess up once its over.
I remember going back to KH1 thinking Sephiroth was just me being dumb as a kid and HOLY SHIT was I right that boss is easy as piss if you're not a little moron kid
How did he not mention the heartless angel can be interrupted in kh2 💀
Heck yea
My dumb ass forgot Xemnas uses Time so it makes sense that Gravity magic stuns him lmfao.
16:00 Aqua you gud?
Ugh....I still haven't beaten Yozora...
I beat everything in KH1, 2, and BBS. I was VERY mad at what they did to Kairi in KH3, so I only played for the plot. I took a swing at Data Larxene and lost in 10 seconds. I didn't see Yozura coming and I lost in 5 seconds without a retry. I haven't played KH3 since...
Pretty sure the original kh on ps2 has Kurt Zisa Ice Titan and Sephiroth
Phantom was the only superboss in the original Japanese release on the PS2. For the international release, they added the bosses you mentioned.
Just beat ice titan before I saw this vid. I hated it 20 years ago, I hate it now. Guard is not an exciting mechanic, and running in circles waiting to guard projectiles the whole fight does not feel good or rewarding. You can smack the shards with your keyblade, which COULD be fun if the hitbox on the shards actually let you hit them, and if it wasn't just an inferior method to spamming guard.
I think a good reference point to this fight is Ganon from OoT, something which existed years before and they clearly used as a reference. Knocking the projectile back and forth was rhythmic and flowed into the fight. Ice titan is anti-thetical to this design, where the "baseball" gimmick feels disconnected and disjointed from the flow of the fight.
Fun fact back in the day when KH was new I defeated Sephieroph before I beat final fantasy 7
23:25 lmfao
Still havent beat yozora that dude is ridiculous
You forgot a boss. There is a boss called Unknown Heartless which fought in BBS Final Mix. You fight him in the secret episode
That’s not a superboss. It’s a slightly harder storyline boss, but not quite in that super category
I honestly don't like Yozoras fight. Maybe its because i was expecting an epic KH3 Sephiroth fight but got a deviantart level oc character instead.
Every kh game has a super boss where you fight a deviant art oc that tiens into the next game lol
