How good is the #bmw5series for 2024? All new from the ground up, does the 5 series exude luxury? Does it have its sporty roots intact? Is the turbo 4 cylinder worthy?
The segment benchmark continues a long success story.
The success story of the BMW 5 Series dates back to 1972, when the first generation of the sporty and elegant four-door sedan was presented. Since then, the worldwide popularity of the BMW 5 Series has steadily increased. With its unmistakable combination of dynamic performance and high level of long-distance comfort, it became the epitome of the business sedan. By the spring of 2023, more than ten million BMW 5 Series had been produced.
Base MSRPs of models available at launch are as follows:
• 530i $57,900 + $995 destination and handling
• 530i xDrive $60,200 + $995 destination and handling
• i5 eDrive40 $66,800 + $995 destination and handling
• i5 M60 xDrive $84,100 + $995 destination and handling
• 540i xDrive* $64,900 + $995 destination and handling
*540i xDrive production starts November 2023
Traditional production site celebrates anniversary.
Like all previous generations, the new BMW 5 Series is manufactured at Plant Dingolfing, BMW’s largest European plant, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In 1973, the first vehicle manufactured at this location was a first-generation E12 5 Series. Today, the BMW Group plant in Dingolfing is not only the lead plant for BMW’s luxury class vehicles, but also the location of the company's e-drive production competence center, which produces both the electric motors and the highvoltage batteries for the BMW i5 on site.
Sporty, elegant sedan at the heart of the brand portfolio.
The exterior design of the new generation reinterprets the sporty elegance of a BMW 5 Series in the brand's current design language. With its distinctive appearance, the new BMW 5 Series is right at the center of the brand's portfolio of four-door models - more present and elegant than the 3 Series, more dynamic and sporty than the 7 Series.
The heightened presence of the new BMW 5 Series is underscored by the athletic proportions and the larger exterior dimensions compared to the previous generation. The new model has grown in length by 3.4 inches to 199.2, in width by 1.3 inches to 74.8 and in height by 1.4 inches to 59.6. The wheelbase has been increased by 0.8 inches to 117.9 and improves seating comfort, especially in the rear.
Modern front design with nearly vertical daytime driving light icons and optional illuminated BMW kidney grille.
The front view of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is characterised by a modern interpretation of the brand's signature twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. The LED headlights show the traditional four-lamp face in a modern, minimalist form. Two nearly vertical LED elements positioned towards the outside function as daytime running lights and turn signals.
The BMW kidney grille, stylistically inspired by the so-called "Sharknose" of early 5 Series generations and projecting far forward, functions as the visual center at the front. All the lines of the front apron and the long hood, which connects directly to the kidney grille frame, run towards the front fascia. With its wide surround and optional illuminated contour line, the BMW kidney grille gives the front view a distinctively sporty appeal.

Many people want BMW to go out of business.
But then I remember that we need competition in the luxury auto space.
But then I remember that “luxury” cars are starting to become not worth it with the exception of some Lexuses.
But then I remember that German luxury cars being unreliable makes German cars not exist to me.
But then…
But then I remember how ugly BMWs are.
And then I remember how much better an Acura and Lexus looks.
Lexus has no place in luxury in today’s market. Have you seen their latest products?! They’re Toyota + now. The don’t even have differentiating designs anymore. This is coming from someone who used to love lexus but not so much anymore. Kinda gets old to wait and wait and wait for them to release a product that caters to a younger demographic who isnt won over with the bare minimum. BMW on the other hand, they kicking ass but cost cutting is starting to affect them to
@@blackjack21477You obviously don’t appreciate the subtle details of Lexus that makes them luxury. BMW cuts costs mechanically left and right with plastic oil pans, hoses, engine casings, etc. But Lexus is mechanically solid but not quite as nice with the interior in some cases. Lexus is definitely more worthy of luxury than BMW because Lexus cuts costs bits that don’t affect reliability like BMW does. BMW is a cheap car mechanically with all the gimmicks to make it look better than a Lexus. That’s the difference I’d say
@@blackjack21477 new Lexus products are world class luxury vehicles and good as any Mercedes BMW Audi and more. Every single Lexus is miles different from any Toyota from every level. these days I am not surprised to see nonsense and invalid comments like you have posted.
@@mrgurulittle7000 agree people have gone nuts These days in social media. Sometimes I think people don't have eyes anyone
Geez! $70K for a 4 banger?
Especially crazy that the 4 banger 530i starts at 57K.
Who tf would option a 530i to 70k?
I would just get the 540i without options at the starting price of 64K and call it a day.
A sucker is born every minute
This.
This used to be M5 money.
$75k if it says ‘Land Cruiser’
No acoustic glass??? Even the Camry and Sonata have acoustic windshield and front side windows available.
It’s so good you are reviewing the germans. They are mad for these in the UK. As a Lexus fan i know you will compare them objectively. I personally don’t think this 5 series will age well.
Money to burn?
Sure, go for it. Otherwise, 3 series would be a nice choice. And the back taillights are Accord like.
Knew some of those buildings looked familiar… used to live down there. Looking forward to reviews on the new x3 when that comes out. Thanks for the review!
I love my bmw x5 compared to my old lexus rx loaded with tech and luxuries
Awesome
I wanted to be more impressed by a new BMW. Sales of the 5 have been so low over the past 10/15 years in my country BMW now only sell the I5 electric M60.
Kirk! How is the new 530i compared to is500 or is350? Are the Is brothers sportier/more powerful than this 4 cylinder beemer?
Is is a 3/4 series rival. This is an ES rival, sort of.
@@KirkKreifelsExcept for the fact that Lexus engines are sleepy, anemic dogs and they no longer offer a 6 cylinder. Hard pass.
Wait... so not only Asian (Korean, Japanese) rides channel? what happened? :)
It's mostly Asian autos but they don't exist in a bubble and need to be compared with all cars. Honestly I'd take a TLX type S over this 530i, ES 350 too. Need to try the 540i still.
@@KirkKreifels The variety is appreciated. Please continue Kirk!
I can’t find the 540i on the Canadian website
Great review! Couldn’t find a 540 optioned the way I want it, so I ordered a 2025. You’re definitely right about the contrast between the B58 and the B48; like night and day.
Great that BMW said hello to Kirk with the honks.
The car honked because it auto locks when you walk away. Normally it just beeps. The double honk means I locked but you left me running.
How do you feel about this 5 Series vs Current Gen Lexus ES F Sport?
ES is a better buy.
BMW: The Ultimate Money Pit Machine
Is the inline 6 version available in Canada
No, it's not.

I'm not really a fan of BMWs new design era 😢
The last gen 5 series was the last proper 5 series. Along with the last gen M5
I have always liked BMW but haven’t owned one past 1 year. X3 M40i… what are your thoughts on reliability on of the X3/X4.. BMW SUVs?
I definitely don’t like the new look of the 2025 X3..
this 5 series looks great.. I think BMW is leaning towards luxury, if someone wants a bit more connection to the road you gotta go Porsche 😊
If you want a fun "light" sporty reliable SUV get a BMW X3 with the B58 engine or get a used Porsche Macan 252hp (reliable VW/audi engine) and get an ECU tune if you feel like its not powerful enough. The base Macan is very reliable, tunable, parts are cheap, it has the famous Porsche PDK gearbox and it handles better than the V6 Macans. BMW X3 and Porsche Macan are the best handling mid size SUVs.
If a 4 cylinder 5-series is all you can afford, then you shouldn't be buying a 5-series.
But keeping up with the Jones is one helluva drug.
By itself, the 530i is decent, but imo the base 5 series should be a 535i with the B58 producing around 300hp. B48 is a great engine, but a mid-size luxury sedan would be much better suited for a more powerful base engine. This car’s B48 variant is great for the base US 3 series, but for a base 5, a detuned B58 would be much better.
Kirk, do Volkswagens next.👍
Like every new Bmw, step back regarding quality, materials and paint job, unfortunatly....much critics in Europe at the moment
Rear legroom is very poor for something near 5 metres long… the benefits of FWD set up makes a lot of sense after seeing how much you get in the 5 series… my parents have the recently replaced Camry and it feels limo like in leg room. I wonder if a A6 would be more FWD legroom or RWD
Beautiful vehicle but has a questionable reliability history
BMW has substantially improved to top. MB has gone way down
in Germany it´s only a premium Car and in the US a high and Luxury Car, it´s weird 😅
It is because it is a German car. In the same way, Ford and Jeep are considered luxury in Europe, whereas Ford is a mainstream brand in the US.
@@ludovicdjomo8909 Ford is far away to be premium or luxury in the EU and for Jeep only the big SUV´s are premium the smaller one´s are mainstream.
I love japanese cars, but the tech on these bimmers has no equal.
On another note I still dont get why sunroof is standard on luxury car, that makes the car be super hot during most part of the year
I'm a big Lexus fan, but they do not offer a sedan anything like this. When the GS was discontinued, it did a lot of damage to Lexus midsize sport sedan segment. IF Lexus brought back the GS to battle these 5 series, that would be a dream come true. I rather have the new BMW 2024 540 version of this car than any current Lexus sedan.
They still haven't fixed the asphalt at the north end of Vanderbilt Dr. at Bonita Beach Rd.
Honestly get a tlx type s or an es over this
Yes I agree. G80 too.
if it's that B48 engine VARIANT! that 4 cylinder is still a very good engine! the 5 series is brilliant! not everyone wants to LEASE the highest trim or specs....
Good engine. Just inadequate for this car's price imo.
This or the new e-class?
New E class
Wool socks to bed = most vivid dreams possible🟣🟤
What in the world
Comfy
E39 530i also hid the exhaust like that, just not dual
So this a $70k mid size sedan and you still have to crawl in the the back seat and shove your feet under the front seat. Absolutely abhorrent. Now I know why Camry and Accord are so popular.
No map pockets? No maps either. Went the way of the CD player.
Bruhhh try the 540i. It makes such a difference. WHY ISNT BMW PROMOTING IT
this base car comes with dubs aka 20 inch rims most cars come with 15 to 18 inch rims omg
New E CLASS 👑👑 is very much the class leader in it's segment but new 5 series is Also brilliant and legendary has always.
I'm getting a 4cyl for that cost I getting the 6cyl
Not huge on that futuristic electrified look. I'd be more into an electrified car looking normal.
For 75k I'd get a ES300h as a daily and a Miata for fun. This is ridiculously overpriced
70k without ventilated seats? no thank you
This thing is WAY WAY WAY OVER PRICED by about $20k
$70k for 4 cylinders and 255 hp 🤣🤣🤣
The standard front end looks much better. Too much money for a 4 banger with questionable reliability, and large future maintenance costs.
Beautiful exterior and hideous interior. The exact opposite of Mercedes
I'm not the biggest fan of Mercedes interiors or exteriors.
