Germany 2-1 England (1993)

  • England make it six games without a win as they lose 2-1 to Germany in the US Cup in June 1993, finishing bottom in the mini tournament. In their first match indoors at the Pontiac Silverdome, England fall behind to a goal from Stefan Effenberg before an excellent team goal is finished off by David Platt to bring them level. Jürgen Klinsmann scores Germany's winner in the second half. Despite taking just one point from the games, England's performances against Brazil and Germany in the tournament represent a vast improvement on recent matches against USA and Norway.

I loved this German team, they had kept hold of their mullets, played in a classic German way, strength throughout the team, great names, a real penchant for diving. Just wonderful wonderful villains.

I too loved the DEUTSCHE team that played in the US Cup'93, they actually came back from 3 - 0
down to draw with BRAZIL 3 - 3 in that tournament.
It was surprising that at the WC'94 they lost to BULGARIA 2 -1, although their captain
LOTHAR MATTHAUS said in that WC'94 they had no unity in their squad, I just wonder
if they had unity they might've won USA'94 WC, Matthaus feels they would've won.

@@shervinbehrad1848oh really. Do you think they can stand against Brazil in the final or even italy in the semifinals despite italy have fantastic and strong defense like Maldini baresi and costacurta and tassoti and Brazil had romario and bebeto and leonardo and rai????

    • @shervinbehrad1848

@@ahmedabughalia4957 Yes I agree that ITALY & BRAZIL has great players, however ITALY were a bit lucky to be in
the semi-final (Ireland beat them & Nigeria almost beat them). Also German teams generally are very strong mentally so
with that they might've found a way to beat BRAZIL, (Holland gave them a good game and narrowly lost 3 - 2).
Oh by the way LEANARDO & RAI didn't play for BRAZIL after the 2nd round (RED CARD & INJURY),
and BARESI didn't play in the semi-final nor did TASSOTI against BULGARIA.

    • @ahmedabughalia4957

@@shervinbehrad1848for italy, at least baggio and Albertini were unstoppable I their positions and Maldini can stabilize the defence and can play in either side of defence: centre back, left back( his regular position), right back, wing back and he and costacurta kept clean sheets and the Italian goalkeeper managed some great saves
For Brazil, romario and bebeto were unstoppable attacking duo. So as for dunga and Mauro silva and taffarel and aldair who are also great defenders and goalkeepers. They couldn't score much goals becuase of parreira's defensive tactics and romario could actually beat Germany becuase of his talent and skills so as for bebeto.

Nigel Clough? For the England team? Really? Don't get me wrong, he was a very good player at the club level, but he wasn't international class. I think in fairness to poor old Graham Taylor, a major factor in his failure as England manager was the bad luck of being given the role at a time when English football was going through a lull in which there simply wasn't have enough of the necessary talent to perform at an elite level. When you're selecting Carlton Palmer and Nigel Clough, you really need to ask questions. What partly caused this problem was the ban on English club in Europe due to the role of Liverpool fans in the Heysel disaster, which led to a period of stagnation in the English game. An England team had reached the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup under Bobby Robson, but in truth that team had several talented players at their peak. Taylor's timing was unlucky. By 1996, the English game had recovered and England were able to knock six bells out of Holland in that years' European Championship - a very satisfying revenge for the humiliation of 1988.
