- Natto is fermented soybeans and is especially famous in Ibaraki prefecture. Today we take a train ride to a natto factory that offers more than just your run-of-the-mill natto. We'll also show you some sights along the way and end the trip with a couple of Ekiben.
Natto are fermented soybeans that is usually eaten at breakfast in Japan. It's known for it's unique taste and texture as well as the incredible health benefits. Ekiben are special lunch boxes sold at train stations all over Japan.

So I’m an American who’s barely eaten soybean products and just now really started to explore.
I must tell you that after watching your Nato videos, I ventured to my local Asian mega market and picked out some frozen packs of nato.
I defrosted and kept in the fridge a few days, not being brave enough and then one day I finally made myself a nice, fresh pot of Japanese rice 🍚, and sat down with my nato.
I LOVED IT!!! 😮 so surprised and this has catapulted me to try and be brave in so many areas.
I know this will probably sound sacrilegious to a Japanese, but I made a homemade batch of Kimchi and it’s my favourite thing to accompany nato! The two compliment each other so well with rice!
Thank you for sharing so freely your life that has had a positive impact on my food journey.
I love natto! Yes, it's an acquired taste for those of us who didn't grow up with it. But now I can't get enough. Natto mixed with hot steamy rice, thinly sliced green onion, and a sunny side up egg is the breakfast of champions!
Hi Satoshi and Shinichi good to see you all enjoying this video be safe God BLESS to all of u love guy's
The beauty that the Japanese bring to everything, even the most mundane, astounds me. Thank you for all the beauty you bring Japan!!!
omg that expression at 3:52 😍 and the happy people and the waterfall view...
made me smile, made my day...
honto ni arigatou 😇
Person from Greenland here - Natto is a daily part of my breakfast :D every day! Love it! I probably like all the worlds funky food stuff too - but omg. Natto has stayed with me since I discovered it! Also a plus that it's super healthy! WIN!
That waterfall looked AMAZING! And the weather so romantic! Beautiful
Watched this with my 8-year-old daughter. We thought it was so interesting and entertaining! Love your videos.
Love to see that beauty in your eyes! You are both so wonderful--thank you for bringing us along.
Baby Nemo! Oh Satoshi....! XD
I laughed way too hard at that, and was like did he actually say that or did I just imagine it haha xD
Good show and good content!
Saw you guys at Disney Sea today!
I am so happy! I was hoping we might get to see a trip video again soon, and this is marvelous! The natto factory looks wonderful. I'm so glad you were able to visit, and I am looking forward to seeing your upcoming visits, when you try the natto you bought there. I bet they will be delicious! The waterfalls were so beautiful. Wow! I love riding trains. At least on our local commuter trains, called BART, we cannot eat on the trains. I'm glad you can do so, and enjoy those amazing ekiben. Those looked especially good this time. Thank you for the great video! :-)
Most days we're lucky if we survive the trip on BART ;-)
Nosh Abroad I hear you! Wishing you safe, smooth journeys on BART as much as possible! :-)
I LOVED this video so much! I love rainy days and loved that you filmed your trip and showed the views from inside of the car. The falls are now on my bucket list. You two make me smile.
Thank you!!!💗
i love your channel, i can't stop watching ...
I like these little trips you do. They show the little places in Japan that you might not normally see. The waterfall was beautiful. And I always love seeing you try the different Ekiben! They really are so fun and unique! Looking forward to your Natto tasting!
I had so much fun. I loved the waterfall. Beautiful.
That waterfall... すごい!本当にすごいでした!
i love the way Japan looks in the rain, maybe its just the country side or me being from the city in Mississippi, USA. theres just something calming about that view
The waterfall really reminds me of Hawaii. It was so beautiful
Beautiful Bento boxes well presented. Fantastic day trip enjoyed every bit .
Satoshi's face when he tried the second type of natto was pure delight! I've never tried natto myself but he would convince me to do so in a heartbeat hahaha.
I'll be waiting for your next video!
You brought back so many memories for me! I lived in a few different places in Ibaraki and I loved going to the falls. Thank you for this!
love waterfalls so beautiful. love watching the different varities natto.
What a fabulous day trip! I've never had natto before, but after seeing all the different varieties, I would love to give it a try.
The falls looked absolutely beautiful and the whole area while you were driving looked so peaceful and fantastic, too. Thank you for sharing. 😄
Each time I watch your videos I keep thinking, I wish I could hang out with them. Keep up the awesome work!
What a wonderful tour of the natto factory. I wish I could try it.
Loooove Natto. And miss Ekiben. Can't wait for your video on those Nattos!
Ah! Satoshi looks like he is in heaven! Great and informative video as usual guys. Keep up the good work!
Compared to travel in the US it seems so chill and interesting! Everyone loves to drive here, I don't know why, it makes people tired and stressed so that they don't want to deal with new experiences, and maybe that's why there are the same half dozen fast food restaurants with the exact same things at all the highway stops.
I love your travel videos! Ekiben is definitely one of my favorite things about Japan. So well presented and delicious!
You guys are amazing!!!!! This video was so awesome 👏🏾!!! The waterfall fantastic. Thank the guys ❤️❤️❤️😘😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
wow ... this is an amazing experience! my favourite things ... natto and ekiben!
Looks like you guys had a nice trip, even in the rain. The Ekiben looked delicious and I thought the waterfall was beautiful. Thanks for sharing your trip for Natto! :)
Wow! Such beautiful scenery!
I wish I could taste all those different natto!
Love these day trip videos. That waterfall is spectacular!
The best natto video! Thank you, guys.
Wow, what an amazing range of natto! Satoshi looked so happy sampling them. :D
Great, informative video - and those waterfalls were breathtaking.
I love these shows! You guys are awesome together! Thank you!!!
Wow the waterfall was amazing and you guys are too 😃😀
So beautiful to see the waterfall. Reminds me of the times when I was little when my parents would take us to Niagara Falls in buffalo New York (also Canada since they are connected by the falls lol)
Wow, your bento looked absolutely amazing :D
But the true highlight of the video is the beautiful countryside!
These videos are one of the highlights of my day when they come out! I love y'all's adventures so much.
What a lovely trip to Ibaraki! Trying all the natto and ekiben sound like heaven to me. You're so lucky!
What a lovely trip 😍!!
Haha did you really say the fish eggs are "baby nemo"? Thats great it made my day.
Recently I tried natto, now I am in love with it,looking forward to the natto videos in the coming weeks.👍👍👍😁😁😁❤❤❤😊😊😊
How does it taste? I'm dying to try it but I'm afraid I won't like it. .:/
Lizzy, you probably won't unless you are really into pungent fermented foods. It's not for everyone. I enjoy it myself but I think the majority of people won't. Especially in American culture where everything is heavily sanitized. But I wouldn't discouraging you from at least trying it. In my local Asian markets it is about USD $2. Not a huge loss if you don't like it right? I would wholly recommend trying it with something like steamed or even fried rice.
i love watching your ekiben videos, all the special region bentos looks so delicious!
Great video guys! I love the Day Trip concept! Let's make it a series!
Oh! I so want to visit Japan again 🙂
Yay! Best thing to wake up to, a new TabiEats video 😋
納豆食べたくなりました~一つの会社であんなに種類があるとは思っても見ませんでした。紹介が楽しみです。滝の凄さに圧倒されました。あんなに凄いとは‼駅弁も美味しそうで、自分が旅に出た気持ちになりました。
This was so much fun to watch 🥰🥰🥰
When I tried natto I had it as a sushi topping in Japan. I put the whole sushi into my mouth with the large heaping of natto, kept my composure, but honestly struggled to swallow it. I'm a relatively adventurous eater and have no problem with smelly cheeses, so I am surprised I struggled with it, but I was caught off guard. I don't think it was seasoned as it was given to me as a surprise 'test' and I was told to eat the sushi without soy/wasabi, but I swore to myself to never eat it again.
Now you guys are making me really want to try it again, properly seasoned with the accompanying sauce, Japanese mustard and green onion, to see whether it really is as bad as I found it that one time!
I would like to visit that natto factory when I visit Japan again, it looks very interesting, pity it is so far from the train station. Looking forward to your natto tasting video! 😊
that looked tasty! I'm glad you two are having fun
I had some natto this morning from my local shop 👍 I was happy to find it here in usa lol
Another good one! Thanks guys!
Another great video. I think the ekiben was my favorite. Thanks!
I would have a huge collection of bento boxes if I took those train rides.
I always laugh when Satoshi has his Foodgasm face when he eats something that is delicious. Makes me want to eat it also to see how good it is cause his face speaks a 1000 words. :)
Those natto look so good! Cheese on natto seems great. Fermented + Fermented combo
I've been dying to try natto I finally go a market that is rumored to have it! I'm so pumped especially after this video!
Hello! Have you ever seen the television series Samurai Gourmet? Satoshi's enjoyment of food always reminds me of this show - he could be a younger version of the main character! Thank you so much for your lovely videos!
Breda Fallacy the protagonist for Samurai Gourmet is so endearing. I love his character! I also love watching Satoshi's reactions to the food!
I love that show, so enjoyble and wholesome. I enjoyed every episode
Interesting..looks like you two had a lot of fun with one another 🙂
what waterfall looks very romantic haha
Very cute little bento boxes
They are soo cute together 🙃
"baby nemo" HAHAHAHA!!! love it!!!
The waterfall looks amazing...wish I was there hahaha
luv Japan!
Love, love, love this type of video! Makes me really want to try natto out! :x I luv seeing different parts of Japan and learn more abt diff. culture.
I loved this video you guys! I have bee watching tons of your older video. So far, the videos with mom and this video have bee the best. Your use of music to break up your video into segments was very successful. cheers!
+Max B thanks so much! Much appreciated:)
Love the out and about vids guys!!!!
I love the ekiben containers. I think I'd take those home and use them again. 😂
Most ekiben are disposable. This one happens to be special. If you think that is social you should see the "Hipparidako Meshi" ekiben. It comes in a replica (miniature) octopus pot. The Kamameshi Ekiben comes in a rice pot. There is also the Daruma Bento Ekiben and the Shinkansen E7 ekiben that come in memorable keepsake containers.
Wow - totally enjoyed your natto tour. I love - love -love natto and during my 10yrs in Tokyo I ate a lot. But never knew there were so many different beans used. I am your new subscriber from today ! OTSUKARESAMA.
Welcome to our family!
@@TabiEats what’s the name of this place ? Thank you 🙏
good to know since I can't read Japanese I can at least stumble my way around with the little bit of Korean I've learned so far XD it's amazing to me watching your vids and being able to read the Korean on signs rather quickly.
you guys inspired me to visit Japan! I'm leaving tomorrow to Toyko!
So wonderful!!
Love your day trip & food haul videos! Wishing you all the best! 💗💗💗
Thanks for watching!
Satoshi is always smiling.
this may be helpful for foreigners to at least try to eat them. the basil and tomato flavor wow! now i want to try to eat them.
Thanks for sharing your video.
Natto is very healthy food.
for blood vessels , bloodstream.
but it is very expensive in Korea.
Thank you !
Pretty easy to make at home !
I'm definitely curious about those natto varieties and the cool bento...they look delicious. But that waterfall! I "wow"ed right before you two did! xD
Omg, haha I don't personally like natto, but this video was awesome! :D Looks like you two were having a lot of fun!
2:38 best neba neba ever!
I can't believe how awesome this video is, combining some of my most interests: Natto and Ekiben. I just love the idea of ekiben, this is soo unique and I watched some documentaries about how it was invited, how they fill them to look the most beautiful, and so on. Also there is a channel on YT showing different ekiben (sadly it's not updating anymore) which I watched for hours some years ago, now I luckly got the feeling back while watching you! Tank you soo so much. Oh and the Natto factory was incredible, THIS would be paradie for me :D beside of that, yout video cutting is incredible good, it felt so fluent to watch and I adore you for the small personal peeks of dancing in the car to the music, or your impression of the moment you saw the waterfall it was ecatly the same I reacted :D
I don't know if I will ever make it to Japan even it's my biggest dream, but I like to make notes of things I'd like to visit and plan it in my mind: now I got something more and I do have to thank you so much for this^^/ lovely greetings from Switzerland
+Plejade thanks so much
Beautiful!
So interesting! The falls was spectacular. Lovely vlog as always. 🌻
I want to give natto another try... the only one I can find in my city smells SO much, almost my whole studio was smelling like stinky socks xD I only had like three bites and had to stop.
That waterfall is AMAZING *-*!!
As always, great vid guys!! Take care ♥
OMG this is sooooo much fun
Some time ago. We did not have good natto in Brazil. only a short time after it starts to come good brands. My family does not like it much because of the poor quality of natto from before. Only recently did I enjoy it. my children hate; hehehehehehe But my grandson loves it. And how together with your Ojiitchan (me)! ehehehehe Cheers guys.
great video guys..fascinating
would love to try Ekiben they love incredible 😗😗
Satoshi always slamming hell yeah
Woohoo! Your epic natto taste tests finally got me hooked--I found some tasty natto in my local Mitsuwa Market. I had tried it once before at a restaurant, but it was unseasoned...and I was unprepared for the slime! I'm going to do my own natto taste test from what I can find at Mitsuwa, Marukai, and Nijiya markets. So far, Mizkan's Kin No Tsubu Umefuumikurozutare is pretty tasty. Domo arigato!
Have you tried natto with something sour like kimchi or sauerkraut? Anything pickled is good too. ! I love nattto. I make my own at home because I’d go broke if I had to buy at the store. Homemade is much better than store/previously frozen
You are so lucky to have a chance to eat that wonderful looking food the presentation is so perfect and looks awesome thank you for showing off the food to us.
I want to make NATTO myself and have ordered the powder from Japan and I am thinking of using soy black beans to ferment but can you tell me the best way to do this I have a slow cooker.
Love your show thank you Bob-UK
new Life goal: train riding vacation in Japan to test ALL the Ekiben haha
this is so adorable!!! and so interesting love it 💕💕💛💛
I loved that you took a natto factory tour! I'm looking forward to your taste tests. I hope you will describe the inside of the factory, as I am very curious! I make homemade natto, but it is nowhere near as good as what you have shown!
I truly love natto, but I've been eating eat since before I can remember.😄 My favorite right now is natto-jiru, I just found a recipe for it a couple of years ago. It would be awesome if you guys could do a video of the various dishes you enjoy with natto!
Thank you for your videos!💕
That tram food is amazing . You should come to the uk and have some British rail specialities
Nice video. I love natto
