    Please read this if you are considering buying a Norco Search and you live in Australia. Once you buy this bike you are on your own, forget any after sale service, if you have a problem, Norco will not help you.
    I bought a Norco Seach XR a few months ago. After about 500 km there was a grinding noise in the bottom bracket, investigations revealed that the non-driveside dust cover was put in the wrong way around resulting in water, dirt and aluminium dust in the bearing. Norco was notified and refused to replace the bearing. The local bike shop that sold the bike replaced the Praxis BB bearings with Sram GXP bearings at their own cost.
    A few weeks later the back wheel starts making terrible noises, I take the bike back to the LBS and they find the spokes in the rear wheel are the culprit, they again talk to Norco about it and again Norco refuse to do anything about it. The LBS tries tightening the spokes to get rid of the noise, this does not work and a few days later I'm out on a 130 km ride and a spoke breaks.
    There are so many other bike manufacturers out there that care about their customers, why would you give a company like this your hard earned money?

      I couldn’t agree more. In Canada Norco is good about looking after their customers, but they are a relatively small Canadian company compared to the big dogs. I would be frustrated if I were in your shoes. Definitely something Norco need to look closer at if they want to compete in other territories.

    It's a beauty! One of My favourite gravel bikes. Others are the Salsa WarBird Carbon 2019, the Vielo V+1, the Genesis Datum, the Accent Feral, the Ghost *** Road Rage -series and a handful others.

    A beautiful rig. I'm considering a purchase, depending on whether or not it is compatible with a rear rack for touring and both a front and a rear fender.
    One thing I find lamentable - is the lack of a facility for mounting a headlight on the fork. How difficult should it have been to drill a threaded eyelet in the fork crown! And I wish, this colour was still stocked in shops.
    The green one, the Apex setup, is beautiful as well, but the gradient must have been subtler: the rear end is too dark - not as timeless a paint job as it could be. Gradients are beautiful, but a transition from beautiful emerald green to black is a bit excessive.

    Thanks for the review. It is a nice bike but out of my price range that my wife will not kill me over. I am currently paying off the Norco Search XR A1 2020. It's the red Aluminium frame model. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this as I have found no reviews of it anywhere.

    I've been riding a Search XR Carbon that I rebuilt with Ultegra Di2. It's been a great bike. I'm fortunate enough to live near one of the worlds largest Norco dealers and the guys there are really on top of what's going on. I was lucky enough to get the XR when it first came out. As far as I know, they are unobtainable right now.

    It looks like your model is the 2018 Norco Search XR C1 or C2. the steel or aluminum XR's are not as costly. I have the 2019 XR rival in army greenl, its not perfect but and i love it

      @ToddJones  Před 6 lety

      I've never had an issue, but going from an external coupling BB, I understand. The wider the press fit BB the less likely it will creak. I had bad luck with Cannondale.

    Hi LOB! What do you think about NORCO SECTION CARBON 105 (2019)? Is it good for road and gravel? I ride mostly asphalt but want a more rugged frame and abilities to ride in the forest.

  • @Gerald-iz7mv
    @Gerald-iz7mv Před 6 lety

    hi could you review the trek checkpoint bikes from 2019? they just released recently.
    how difficult and costly is it to remove the handle bar from the 2018 Norco Search XR and install a straight handle bar like the Trek FX Sport 6? i know you also need to change breaks etc...

    • @ToddJones
      @ToddJones  Před 6 lety +2

      It’s expensive, $300-$400, and maybe more with hydraulic brakes. I would honestly recommend riding the bike with curly bars first, Road bars are designed with comfort in mind considering the different hand positions, the flare gives the ride more stability. I’d suggest getting a good fit done. I’ve been doing fittings for 6 years and have a biomechanics background.

    • @Gerald-iz7mv
      @Gerald-iz7mv Před 6 lety +1

      the reason why i ask is because you sit kinda low and it might not be the best for your back over long run... is there a way to adjust the height of the handle bar and make it more comfortable for the back? so it has a similar height compared when you sit on a trek fx sport 6?

    • @TJPavey
      @TJPavey Před 5 lety +2

      I know this is a older comment, but you could look for a hard tail mountain bike. Not all have completely gone to 1x yet. The bike would likely be cheaper up front even.

      @@Gerald-iz7mv Check out the Specialized AeroFly ( www.specialized.com/de/en/s-works-aerofly-carbon-handlebars--25mm-rise/p/156095?color=228231-156095 ) - or the ToSeek ( www.amazon.com/TOSEEK-Carbon-Bicycle-Integrated-Handlebar/dp/B07MRHRH6F ) copycats. These are drop bars that add 25mm rise to the handlebars.
      I have been touring extensively on mountain bikes (and folders before that!), and I'm fairly resolved to steer away from straight bars. The comfort is comparable, despite the vast differences in feel. Straight bars steer like a tractor. They are enjoyable for over-cobbles or off-road rides, but on tarmac I much prefer the drop bars. Main reason: riding a drop bar bike, one automatically assumes a relatively aerodynamic position, and since most drag comes from the rider (rather than the bike) - straight bars will slow you down, compared to drop bars. Especially in headwinds. Ride drop bar bikes for a while, then go back to riding a straight bar bike - you will agree with Me. In practical terms, that means losing a couple of kilometres an hour on average (very roughly speaking, because it's much more complicated than that), and riding shorter owing to exhaustion.
      I also find drop bars look much better on a road or gravel bike, compared to straight bars. Especially on such a beauty of a bike!
      Then, there's the additional expense of the conversion, as Land of Bikes mentioned.
      Regarding neck or back pain, there's hardly any difference. If anything, drop bars, if set up correctly, might be more comfortable. Flat-profile drop bars are better than cylindrically-tubed ones. I've had unbearable neck stings riding flat bar bikes (literally any crosscountry / trail bike I've owned) and some discomfort (not quite as bad) riding a drop bar gravel bike (My treasured Salsa WarBird 2019 I plan to supplement with a Norco Search XR Carbon). That's evidence enough that drop bike bars are no more detrimental to a back or neck than straight bars.
      In either case, I recommend the following exercises: czcams.com/video/gv4SDeUc0YA/video.html . It's difficult to fathom, but they do alleviate neck ache in long run by stretching the neck and relieving muscle tension by an impressive measure. As far as back pain goes, I'm fairly sure biking is not as damaging as spending long hours in a chair, lying in a certain position for long or hauling heavy weights. I'm also fairly certain there are exercises against back pain, as well.

      Not really heavy for a gravel bike. But light componentry (at a considerable cost), you could easily reduce the weight by a kilo and a half.

    • @ToddJones
      @ToddJones  Před 5 lety

      Haha, love the reaction.. This bike is pricy, but it likely comes down to the engineering costs, mold costs and overall R&D. Bike companies that launch new expensive bikes don't have the volume so they have to up the price. This is an amazing bike though, and trust me. It's not just like any other bike, you need to ride one to feel the difference.

      @@ToddJones Good morning. Hey, thanks so much for replying, and the explanation of production costs. Strangely enough, my nephew works for Norco here in BC and just got a 2018 Search XR. Not sure what he would have paid as I didn't ask.
      I'm sure I'll get to ride it when I head down there. I've ridden his Torrent and it's superb!
