  • When we're painting, we often struggle to make certain parts of it work. And while struggling with that part, we begin to forget other things around it. But by doing this, we're avoiding making good parts of the picture even better by putting something opposite next to them. In this video I'll explain how you can use this 'opposite' element in your painting to help the good parts of your work shine.

smooshy and crunchy, loose and intentional --- these are snappy and memorable guidelines ro help shape a painting.

Sound advice! Appreciate it so much Judy. I'm sure the struggle (for me) to move from the experimental/messy stages into a more refined headspace will benefit tremendously by bringing this type of focus.

I have just recently found your videos and like them very much. May I point out just a small thing; on this video you speak about the painting on the left and how it’s balanced by the thin black line on the bottom. However, that line is hard to see because your background for the two paintings is also dark. In some of your other videos I also find distracting things around the paintings, sometimes what looks like white pieces of paper or cloth under the corners. But your lessons are quite good and very helpful, and I like your manner and curious accent, which I can’t place. Australia? New Zealand? Thanks so very much for sharing these gems!
