I also have 50mm wheels that are not hookless nor made by hunt. If I add the mud guards to it, the weight is pretty much the same as this. Interesting - I want to upgrade my Trek Emonda (carbon) and been dabbling with an Emonda ALR build …. Although in the sales, the carbon is bearly more expensive and building a bike up is seriously expensive in comparison - an ALR frame is £1000 - and can’t get a complete SL5 carbon for £1700 at the moment, and stick that on a cycle2work scheme (something you can’t do with a build) and it’s much much cheaper to buy a complete bike … what I do like about the ALR is it doesn’t have the stupid seat masts …. Mind - £4000 for that bike is crazy crazy crazy IMO

    • @Ryan.T89

      You’re £1700 SL5 carbon comes with the old 11 speed 105, cheap crap alloy wheels, bars and stem along with low end tyres and a entry level saddle. By the time you buy decent wheels, tyres then change the bars and stem to ones that fit along with a saddle that fit you could build an Ultegra bike 12 speed bike to the spec you want for the same money.

      Channel presenters, like many industry workers and shop employees get to purchase a new bike or frame, groupset, wheels, etc. at a substantial discount once a year.
      It’s usually enough discount that you can sell it a year later for about what you paid.
      They have to agree to keep the bike or parts for one calendar year.
      Many industry folks and employees take advantage of being able to get a new bike every year this way, and stay current with technology.
      Staying current is pretty important for most cycling journalists, since they are the face of the sport for many people.

      As an aging rider, I simply will not buy a bike that I could build for $1000. Yes, it doesn't look as clean and flashy, but when the average rider is speeding along at 12.5 mph average, 50 mm deep wheels do nothing but add weight. 12 speed groups give you a lot of gears to jump over and it's nice to know that you're could climb 5000 feet to the top of one of the local hills in a 36 but those days are far behind me now. From 300,000 ft per year, I'm down to 160,000, and from 10,000 miles per year, I am down to 5,000. I have a Trek Alpha 1.5, but I prefer my steel Basso Loto. I use a BMC SLO as a winter bike, and I hate Di2 because I can't tell the difference between up and down with winter gloves on. After years of using Campy, I am returning to Shimano because I can get older 10 speed parts and not spend all of my time shifting over gears to find the right gear. Bicycles and components have become ridiculously expensive, and although I could buy anything I want, I refuse to pay these prices. There is no difference between my Alpa 1.5 and that ALR. Well, yes, there is. The Alpha cost me $500 and the Centaur group another's $500. And the paint is black and white.

    Don’t understand the trolls in the comments. When will people get through their heads that what others do is none of their business. So what? His money. His bike. He can build whatever bike he wants regardless of you thinking it’s dumb, insane or unnecessary. You don’t have to like it, yet your opinion aren’t facts, and nor is it valid as it’s not your channel, your money or bike. People are weird, have no common sense and too much time to meddle with other people’s lives and their decisions.

      I’ve build many a bike over the years, and I see your point - but the point of a custom build is to build something truly special and unique - really not intending to knock this build - but a Grey Trek with Ultegra isn’t all that ‘special’ … I could have completely have understood it, if it was a custom colour steel frame for example - looks to me like a parts bin special

    4600 for an alloy frame…. No thank you. But enjoy

    • @prestachuck2867
      @prestachuck2867 Před 7 měsíci

      It was $4600 for the whole bike, not the frame. It always cost substantially more to piece together a bike than to buy one off the rack. The big companies pay substantially less for components than the consumer does.
      That frame is available as a complete 105 equipped bike with alloy rims and handlebar for around half that price.
      The presenter in this video wanted a custom build.
      Choosing all of his same parts and specs to build onto a good quality carbon frameset would have been substantially more expensive than this.
      I’m pretty sure that Cycling Weakly presenters do not pay full retail prices for their gear, if they actually pay for it at all.
      If they do have to pay, they probably get the standard industry pro discounts that are made available to full time bike shop employees.
      Well below standard dealer cost.

      @gregkane8635 Před 7 měsíci

      @@prestachuck2867 I know. I meant the full price for an alloy bike. There’s better options available a lot cheaper. Ie giant tcr pro frameset can be got around 1500. Ultegra di2 1400 hunt wheels 1000 your left with 600 for bars stem and saddle. So my point stands. There’s a lot of better options for less money out there it’s a disgrace the price of that frameset alone
