I would love to go one day. But if you have a passport from a Muslim country it is a nightmare to get a visa from the UK. They invite you for an interview at the Embassy, where they ask you questions like whether you are planning a terrorist attack there, or whether you have already participated in one! I wonder who would say " yes" though?? And if you get the visa, the worst part is still to come, when you are at the gate for pass control. There you go through the same thing again. It is very humiliating really. Besides, imagine if I wanted to go there on the 19th of March to see the event with Alain and John Gray: when they ask me at the gate " what is the purpose of your visit" they would never believe it if I said " I want to see two philosophers talking about life".
But when I am back home next time, I'll go to The School of Life in Istanbul for sure.

Alain de Botton Danke schön Alainlein. Indeed I am already very happy for everything I have the chance to benefit from The School of Life! Besides most of the philosophers and writers we feel deeply grateful for are dead for a long time, so we don't have the chance to see them live either:-(

Great video! I know this might be expensive, but I think it would be a great idea to have, let's say, 3-5 of such videos featuring different people and their slightly different motivations/focusses for seeking out the School of Life. Just so that people get the impression that the seminars are for "everyone". Not that this clip is suggesting anything different, but a variety of clips could not only make future marketing campaigns less repetitive, but make that message even more explicit. Just an idea.

Amazing. You guys should do a video on John Dewey and education, I see a lot of parallels between what you are doing and his philosophy. I just wrote a paper on his ideas as a socio-technical solution to the ecological crisis :) come to Canada!

P.S. this channel truly helps me in most ways possible, i admire the quality content, and it makes me happy that such a positive demeanor can be displayed in such mass quantities. I love the innocence of TSOL and continue to trust it, i realize that many grow skeptical of such things because they seem "too good to be true" or "purposely misleading" though I really hope that does not apply in this case. Oh man, I so wish that a School of Life would get set up here in Tokyo. In the meantime, I suppose I can just watch all of the videos again while I develop my own mentality.

***** Thanks for the link its a nice touch :) I can now confirm that it is walking distance from kings cross and therefore easy-ish to reach from anywhere in the UK, I will definately be going there sometime they have an interesting event going on :) Hope you make it at some point too :)
Honestly, I don't like being advertised to, I would have thought that if anybody was above this sort of thing it would be you guys. The style of this video could be something a marketing department produced for a bank. Other than that love the channel.

I love the channel. But this ad is achingly middle class toss. The only thing missing is a Waitrose.
Ooh what fun! I'd visit that shop if I knew it's location,I ought to Google it I suppose. But I can't for now because my current work hours preclude a day trip to London. I find most of the School of Life videos very helpful and clear thinking. But why is EVERYONE in CZcams Universe,all over, everywhere,young,slim, beautiful. I don't belong since I'm old,dumpy,frumpy and a bit thick!
I'd love for something like this to open in my country, the Philippines. But I am thankful you have your channel and online reading materials. Hope u consider branching out to Asia soon!

Glad you reply to these comments :) I've watched all the philosophy videos and found them very informative. So when I clicked on this I was expecting more of the same and was thrown a bit by the tongue in cheek advertorial style. I feel it devalues the other (brilliant) videos. Basically, if I'd seen this video first and knew nothing about what you are trying to do I probably would have avoided watching any more of your films.
Very proud that so much effort has been put into this project. Just a shame I live elsewhere. School of life, come and visit Bristol soon! Or maybe set up a touring team to visit Universities/ cities in general? Sounds cheesey I know...'touring team'...but food for thought!

I love your books and these videos but every so often I watch one and my ''oh no, cult!!!'' alarm goes off. I think all these ideas are for the greater good for sure, but I'd hate to see them compromised as a result of a mass ''on no, cult!!!'' alarm bell going off for others. Has this been an issue moving forward?
Alain de Botton Glad to hear and thanks for the response. Today's culture has a great ability to inject unhealthy skepticism into many of us. Its like ''Oh, look a genuinely lovely and profound movement - wait what's the catch?'' Programs like The Landmark Forum and ''communication'' based groups often put forward this idea of Life Education but their is a sinister underbelly of profit and sheep herding beneath the surface. I admire and trust what you do and I guess I needed a slap of your lucidity to remind me some good does actually exist in mass quantities out there. Be well.

To be frank, what really sold me was the fact that it, the school, was presented by a physically beautiful woman: blonde hair, light skin, etc...

Hopefully one day ya'll will open a San Francisco campus. Are there any plans to facilitate meetups or similar grassroots events?
***** assuming this is an open conversation one way we could accomplish this is to take the book of life content split it up into presentation type content and create a series of weekly talks along with talking points that could be used by local meetups. You could use an affiliate code system to allow for the collecting of event/chapter fees similar to how toastmasters and other such network groups operate. I would be happy to work on developing the platform or even splitting the content up into presentations. Similarly I would be happy to scout out venues or areas in the SF Bay Area that would work for ya'll.
On another note or perhaps tangent any thoughts on creating content targeted at kids - that parents could use when talking about areas that have historically been addressed by common sense or religion. Ultimately if there is anything I could ever contribute please don't hesitate to ask and for what it is worth thank you for what ya'll are doing it has had a measurable impact in my own life and I imagine many others.

Maybe I'm being too skeptical for my own good. But how long has the school of life existed as a business? I am totally on-board for the school of life, I think it's great. But who is funding all this? CZcams advertisements are not funding the whole brick and mortar operation let alone printing all the books and paying for free walk-in psychiatry. How are you guys able to maintain a profit? I only ask because this is probably the most philanthropic business I've ever seen, and you guys just took a dump on philanthropy.
