  • In this video I run a recce of the Coledale Horseshoe fell race, a fell race organised by Ellenborough AC taking place 30th March 2024.
The race is a featured fell race in the 'Running int' fells' exhibition, an exhibition celebrating the joy of running on the Lake District fells which runs Febuary to October 2024 at the Armitt Library, Ambleside.
The Armitt Library & Museum Centre is easy enough to find in Ambleside, a quick Google search will get you there. The website can be found here www.runningintfells.com
    ABOUT THE RACE.
The Coledale Horseshoe fell race is a category AM with a distance of 8.5 miles/13.7 km and an elevation of 3002ft/915m
There is a mandetory kit list.
    * NOTE ON THE EDIT*
I keep referring to checkpoint 2 as Crag Hill. This is because I was using an OS 1:25000 map and not the race map which has CP2 as 'Eel Crag, summit'.
They're the same. The race line to the summit is up Eel Crag. At what point Eel Crag becomes Crag Hill who knows? Why Checkpoint 2 isn't called 'Crag Hill summit' I can only guess. I'm sure one of you reading this can enlighten me. Additionally, I fully accept I can be an idiot so perhaps I'm missing something here? Regardless the checkpoint is at OS Grid ref: NY 1926 2035
However, lets be honest who cares? Regardless of what it is called you'll be climbing it and you'll be an emotional snotty mess by the time you reach the top. At that point you could call it Checkpoint Charlie for all I care.
I really enjoyed this route. It is a fantastic ridgeline course with a great mix of technical sections and fast trails. As you'lI see I got lucky with the weather. I can only hope it'll be as nice on race day.
    Perhaps I'll see you there.
    Thanks for watching
    John.

Another stellar video mate. No bitty required? Loved the pheasantcam. Cracking group of fells and that run off Barrow is a joy! Run it, but never raced it, tempting. Sterling stuff as always 👍

First day back in the home office and watching this - nice 1st day back. I was up therei n 45mph winds in mid/late November and got so battered my ME shell jacket seams failed ! Coledale is a lovely place when sun and visibility is good, as is just about all of the Lakes, but when visibility drops below 500/600 metres it becomes Ines very disorientating!

Nice one, John (it's Elton btw)
Coledale HS is a lovely yet testing route. You can extend it to make it a bit longer by following west along Gasgale Crags from Hopegill Head (one of the best lines in the Lakes, IMO) and descending to Crummock then climbing back up Lad Hows to Grasmoor (bitch of a climb), then to Wandope to rejoin the main route from Crag Hill. Pushes up to 25km ish. Gotta love the Grisedale Grind ;)
Didn't know they were doing long-sleeve tops; oh wait, you've got a long sleeve under it :D I've got the t-shirt too & looking forward to exhibition :)

Hi Elton, nice one mate that’s definitely a cheeky addition. It’s been a while since I’ve done that route so definitely time for a repeat. It’ll be good prep for Jura if I get a place 👌🏻

I find Phil Maffetone book 'endurance training and racing' really good for structuring training without a coach and without having to do x on this day plan etc.

I absolutely love this route, and well done for picking a lovely day for it. Thank you for your documentation as always! P.S. Which exercises would you recommend for strengthening the knees as I am having trouble with them a bit myself.

Thanks man glad you enjoyed it 👌🏻 on the knees front mate I’d start out with barbell back squats and Bulgarian split squats but make sure your form is good before you start loading on the weight. There’s loads of good ‘how to vids’ on here to teach yourself 🙂

Hi John. Great training run, absolutely stunning. Any chance you could share a little background on your history with running (during future vid)? Would love to know how much experience you had on your legs before tackling the likes of fell running. As ever, great content! Really looking forward to watching the channel continue to grow through 2024.
