      i understand where you’re coming from but the truth is elizabeth played the guitar upside down (kinda like hendrix) so she’d be playing the root bass line with her fingers and melody with her thumb. that’s true cotten picking. i love elizabeth cotten and think she’s amazing but this is 100% travis picking

    For those who are curious about the original, here's a link to the composer, Elizabeth Cotton's, version. czcams.com/video/43-UUeCa6Jw/video.html
    She does a few things differently such as not going to the 9 in the melody on the G7 chord (the second chord) and not using a bar chord for it. She is also just using her fingers - no thumb pick. She also tunes it down a whole step, presumably to accommodate her voice as she was fairly advanced in age when she made the video. (Plus she was left handed so everything is mirror style for us righties.)

    I can't have the bass notes of that G7 chord ring to save my life. I've been trying for days: is there a trick I am missing? I've tried to move my first finger up and down on the fretboard to make sure all the strings ring, but when I place the middle and ring finger, I can't seem to hold the bar in place correctly with the first finger... any recommendations on how to practice the G7?

    • @espalhaarte6875
      @espalhaarte6875 Před 3 lety +1

      This particular style can be tricky to learn and perform on his own so aside from practise you should check if your guitar action is too high and giving you a harder time learning, i´m using a nylon classical guitar and have a similar problem, because my action is high, i can play the bar chords well on other guitars with lower action, so the problem is mainly my action. So check up if that is your problem and practise alot. Best of luck my friend.

    Hi Nate - I have no problem with the right hand. I absolutely cannot play a G with my ring and pinky on 6 and 1. Short, weak; whatever - not happening. so, just skip the 1 string? or flip to normal G? In fact, I can't play a normal C with my ring. Always ends up being the pinky. Just have no reach or strength in the ring.
