  • Morten has never done street photography. So, here in Chania, Greece I took him out for a street photography session in the morning.
    Morten's Photography Channel: / mortenhilmer
    Street photography is one of my favourite things to do. I love getting out in the morning with a single prime lens and capturing the street life. The streets in Chania, Greece are perfect for this type of photograpy.
    So, on the photography vlog today we headed out to take pictures at sunrise. Then, when I found out it was his first time doing street photography, I made a point to give a bit of a lesson, and leave some street photography tips.

      The mounting plate is from 3 Legged Thing. I use one, it's great for getting into portrait mode quickly without having to manipulate the tripod head.

    Chania looks really beautiful. And how amazing is that on one side you still have blue hour & yet on the other side you have those gorgeous pink pastel hues of sunrise starting to appear. Cool images at the harbour. And then the street photography is just fascinating as it expresses culture , mood & location so well.

    Street photography is not my thing but I've spent the last week doing fair photography, which is a combination of street and event. When I haven't been taking photographs, I've been processing them (started with about 3000). At this point, total exhaustion and burn-out have set in. So glad it's over. BTW, watching you do street photography has helped with all this.

    Brendan, lighthouse is in a perfect position to shoot FROM. It is ok to shoot the lighthouse but best photos both at sunset and sunrise are from the lighthouse spot. See those mountains @7:14 ? Old harbor looks perfect at sunset from that spot with those mountain lit in a background. For the sake of compression you need a telephoto lens, frame the best part of old harbor with those mountains lit in a background . With some clouds in the sky it could be a perfect photo.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  Před 6 lety +1

      I don't use these for commercial stock, nope. I would use them for editorial though. Not going to stop someone on a scooter, though.
      In the past, I have found people later after photographing them, showed them the picture, got them to sign a waiver, and sent them a copy in exchange.

      I'm late here for this but I thought I would add. I find that a smaller lens like a 16-35 or a 24-105 is a little easier for people in the street to digest. Whenever I use my 70-200 people are already looking at the camera and it's a bit intimidating when pointed at you. Sometimes I even use my crop sensor t6i and a small kit lens versus the full frame. Not everyone has theses options but I am saying smaller is better for street photography.
      Just food for thought.

    Nice! Were in Chania a couple of weeks ago and got some late afternoon/evening shots and it was really interesting to see your video and your "eyes" on Chania photography (sorry for my english composition ;)). It was a real struggle taking photos at the old port during the evening with the massive amount of people but still got some images I am satisfied with ;). But yes, Chania was really scenic with the narrow alleys and old buildings.
    If you are going back to Chania I can recommend eating on the street Chatzimichali Ntaliani (Good food, good prices and not so touristicy(is that a word)).
