  • This video shows some of the best passages of play throughout The West Coast Eagles premiership season in 2018.
Not all end in goals, or shots on goal, but a lot of them do.
The West Coast Eagles were renowned for their good ball use, especially by foot. This was in stark contrast to other teams playing an ugly "scrum" type of football that relied on pressure and moving the ball forward for territory at all costs.
The West Coast Eagles, often held the ball up to implement a switch play, or took short kicks on offer to gain territory. All of this of course made easier with great ball users across the back line such as: Shannon Hurn, Lewis Jetta, and (sometimes) Jeremy McGovern.
Through the midfield this was complimented by Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff with their great ball use, then Elliot Yeo with his ability to break lines and kick over the back of a zone defence with 60m kicks.
Hard running to provide an outlet for the backline would come from Chris Masten, Jack Redden and Andrew Gaff from the midfield, all who averaged over 5 uncontested marks a game. The high half forwards like Jamie Cripps and Mark Lecras were also popular targets.
The creativity of Liam Ryan, Willie Rioli and Mark Lecras once the ball was forward of centre could break a game apart.
The twin towers of Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling were the focal points of the West Coast Eagles team and for good reason. Terrific set shots, long powerful kicks, always able to create a spillage for the small forwards, and great defensive pressure for key position players.
Enjoy, it's a long video, but it was a good year for The West Coast Eagles in 2018 and they had the best ball movement in the competition.

It's why they ended up winning the GF that year, they relentlessly hit handball targets and hit targets by foot and found space and ways to pick apart sides.

They would be so embarrassed to see what they became this year and last year.
2018 was peak for the eagles, so much enthusiasm, team work, compassion just everything.

When sides take it from deep inside their defensive zone , transition quickly and then score at the other end, it really is a thing of beauty and is what makes our game great. And if you can do that against good sides, you should be right amongst it come September. ; ]

@@StuAus Yes and Yes. Lets face it, Gaffy was never super quick to begin with.. but now six years down the track, he is downright pedestrian, he wouldn't be able to burst away from the pack in the Amateurs now. Should have given him a tap on the shoulder last year and told him to hang up the boots.

Honestly I don't get it. It's pretty much the exact same team only 4 years older. Wtf has changed that we're like the opposite team we are in these highlights. Have the opposition got better and smarter, or have we got lazier?

4 years is plenty long enough for opposition coaches to figure out how to neutralize our kicking game plan
