I remember the first time that I saw Shawshank and I was in awe at how good it was
LaKeisha Wallace I remember the shot where it's looking over to people drinking on the roof. That was the scene where I was like "holy shit, this is fucking amazing"
I can watch Shawshank Redemption on repeat. It is the best movie ever made in my opinion, and Freeman's performance is the main reason.

Fun fact: A black Irishman is not so unfeasible considering the history of large Eastern US cities. Irish immigrants and African-Americans would often be living in the same slums, so black families marrying and taking Irish surnames was not unheard of. So yes, Red in The Shawshank Redemption could most certainly have been black.
OK, I know the character in the novella describes his ginger hair, but let's just ignore that because this man is LITERALLY the voice of God and any opportunity to cast him should be taken immediately.

Yeah, "wanted" was pretty terrible, but Freeman was still good, except that one awkward line. "Now shoot this Mutha Fucka!" never sounded right to my ears.
I have to agree. Morgan Freeman would have to put forth a lot of effort to give a bad performance.
There are bad movies with bad perfomances, more or less good movies with ridiculous performances and there are bad movies with tremendous perfomances : he played in the first and third kinds but never in the second.
I honestly can't think of a bad performance from Morgan Freeman, just a fantastic actor all the way and one of the few people I would freak out if I ever met him in real life!
Now THIS is an actor who deserves all the Oscars without his wife having to cry about it!

As a kid, I remember exactly when I first saw Morgan Freeman. It was on "The Electric Company" where he played "Easy Reader". As a lifelong readaholic, I thought he was the coolest person on TV & always knew he'd be big! I still love his voice too. He's got to be one of the most authentic actors ever.

His performance in "Street Smart" was just amazing. Everyone should see it! I swear there were scenes in that movie where it looked as if the actors were really afraid of him and not just acting. A truly great performance.

Hands down, Red. I must have watched Shawshank Redemption over a dozen times, and I still can't get over Mr. Freeman's performance. He was also the film's narrator. What a voice.
Shawshank is the best in my book...and most of it because of the music and the fact that Mr Freeman narrates it.

He was fantastic in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. It was a strange, awkward role they assigned him, but he owned it and made it one of the cornerstones of the film.

Freeman's prison scene in Brubaker is incredible. His scene presence outshines Redford and Kotto both. When I saw this scene for the first time I was awestruck at Freeman's ability as an actor and have been a huge fan ever since.
Like his friend Clint Eastwood. Freeman is good in EVERY performance Their collaborations in Million Dollar Baby & Unforgiven had to be on this list. Some great movies that were omitted were Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider, High Crimes & The Sum of All Fears. He is one of Hollywood's Best!

My favorites include, March of the Penguins, Glory, Lean On Me, Driving Miss Daisy, Bruce Almighty. But my all time favorite Morgan Freeman movie is The Shawshank Redemption. I rented the CD when it came out and I thought, well with it being written by Stephen King, I thought another suspenseful horror movie. Well I was surprised. And happily glad. Shawshank was great. I had so hoped that Morgan would win the Oscar but I was wrong. (Tom Hanks won for Forrest Gump, I think). Morgan was so glad playing “Red” along with Tim Robbins’ Andy. I watch it every time it’s on TV.
