I'm glad you mentioned "stalling" in a scene. Sometimes when people talk about how they plan a layout and scenes it comes across as if they only ever smoothly follow such a plan. Even with the best plan, sometimes you stall. You need to go on to another project or scene, them come back and find new inspiration for the stalled scene/project. I'm glad to hear you acknowledge that. Thanks for a great build.

Thank you for another wonderful show and series!!
There is little I enjoy more than watching your latest episodes on Sunday mornings with some delicious coffee to amp my inspiration for a day of “work” on the model RR.
For me, good sir, you are the Bob Ross and Bob Villa of model making and painting.
While using the wet on wet technique is old hat for me, you still manage to show and teach new and exciting techniques. It never occurred to me to use the wet-wicking technique to paint tiny window trims. Thank you for that, and everything else that you do!!
I hope that you continue to inspire all of us model makers/painters for years to come, and know that many of us see you as an inspirational treasure to the community.

When my wife was modeling with me we found that if a scene was working, it progressed. If it wasn't working nothing would happen for a week or two. Time to start over. Also, Dusty is very refined. We had Wilber the Cat. He had great joy pulling the trees out and knocking over the rail cars.

Thanks for another dose of inspiration! I added a small office shack to an aggregate dealer on my layout and it really needs to be weathered! I finished it in virgin white and it is too neat and clean for its theoretical purpose. I feel a session of weathering washes coming on. I need to add some of that character to the building. Secondly, I can appreciate your comments bout model railroading as a hobby. I have done display models and dioramas for many years but when you are done, they just sit there. Model railroading gives us a reason to build a model, plus you get to "play" with the scene after you are done. 🙂

Man that turned out fantastic. When I initially saw the first video I thought man what an ugly building, who the hell would want to model that. Now after watching all four videos, I have a completely different attitude about the model. You’re right about the stories that old building is secretly keeping. I have been working on my model R.R. for 15 years during the late fall to mid spring seasons and it is finally starting to look like something. Your an awesome artist and I’ll plan on watching more of your creativity. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Thanks for sharing that. I thought it was a plain jane building as well at first, but it contrasts well against the blue livery of the SRY locomotives. The brand new painted SD35 looked stunning beside it (which I have almost finished ;-) ) I drive by this building under the overpass all the time and catch the odd EMD switching out the local there, so the whole area and industry is inspiring to me. I also plan to build the IPEX plastics industry ( next to it) next spring as well. Should be a big and comprehensive build.

Dear Boomer, said it before, love all the angles of the ‘slumlord,’ definitely adds to the illusion of depth and perspective, even on such a small footprint. Very interesting and instructional how you’ve explained the workings of the wet on wet painting. Cool to see how the same technique works for ‘washing’ the window frames. In conjunction with the ‘old growth’ scene and the overpass, the transition is yet another eye catcher. Especially where the scene seems to naturally expand, not just in depth, but also on the emphasis of length, let’s say as a catalyst for the compression you used. Awesome example of the opportunities of adding different sight lines and angles, to create the expectation of a world beyond the backdrop! Cheerio

    Greetings from Colorful Colorado WJ,
When you look at the roof of the "Slum Landlord" you will see a fairly large Roof Top Air Conditioner. Besides cooling the air, an air conditioning unit condenses moisture (humidity) into water. That A/C condensed water is dripped/drained onto the roof and becomes a constant mini river. The mini river becomes a Micro Climate for green living things. Look at your photos of the roof you took from the top of the bridge. Where does the Mini River originate? Are there green things growing on the banks of the Mini River? You mentioned being OCD in this Vlog, did you model the Mini River and it's green living things on the roof?
    Your Student,
    John

Another excellent series, Boomer! I still remember how eye-opening (and at the time confusing) your painting of the hi-rail excavator was for me. Right after that I painted some HO sacks for a loading dock and used 4 or 5 colors for that simple detail and very much liked the results. Subsequently I've learned some color theory and about the role of shadows and highlights. I also experiment more now, particularly when weathering freight cars (for the early 60's time frame), and I've gotten better at it as a result (at least in my own mind). This is one of the few channels that has made me a better model railroader (again, at least in my own mind). Cheers from Wisconsin!

@@boomerdiorama your welcome mister also for the longest time Ive been trying to guess your accent but you said you live near Vancouver so that kinda answered my question I originally thought you were from Washington or something of that sort so for the longest time I tried to guess where you were from. I'm live in the southern United States of that surprises you at all

Crazy Good Boomer! I saw SRY 109 and 110 in Naniamo the other day, and your layout came to mind. Maybe it's time for me to attempt the Naniamo extension of your efforts.

Yes. That sounds like a cool idea - go for it. I think they deal with mostly tank cars over there as well. Makes for a good reason to acquire a few of those superb Athearn "Genesis" tank cars. ;-)

It's truly amazing how the different scenes, even though compressed, blend together and transition flawlessly! There are no visual lines of demarcation! Great work and thanks for sharing!

Great transitions from industrial, forest, small business to living space. Let me add to meaning of living space, slum apartments on top right?

    • @boomerdiorama

  • @donhanley1213

The old growth forest creates a great transition between Axton steel / warehouses and the slum building. Many times there are sections of land that haven't been developed sandwiched in between developed areas. Great scene composition.
Quick question do you add anything to the water to help break its surface tension to help it flow over the details?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  Před 9 měsíci +1

A little dish soap does the trick. I also use Golden "Wetting Aid" #3591-4 which works awesome for acrylic paint. It makes it flow and blend better.

Pretty sure that Dusty will agree with me that YOU choose that
"Adam family" freaky falling apart building that should have been torn away a century ago for its different textures and contrasts betwen Halloween death and birth with fresh "new" paint. Sure it has
"character" , crying for being modeled. Fix the real one in fresh any color paint. Nobogy would see it.
Don´t know where to put your Diner ? Well Dusty tells me in the ear that, in front of that angry ghosts house it will fit perfect with its clean glassy lunchroom. And where else teens could meet with their fancy cars on saturday night and to offer hearthful shoulder to their love sweaties afraid of so many weird stories about that back buiding.... and you worked too much to hide it.
    Good Dusty...so smart that cat...

Running out of adjectives to value your work. Just great. It had been mentioned before in a previous video (just can’tfind it), but how high is your shelf and how tall are you. Just trying to figure out for my own layout what would work. Thanks

The track level is 57" and I am 5' 10" It makes for in your face industrial switching. It really is a cool perspective when you operate. The only caveat being I need a stool sometimes, but not often. 😁
